I say they should have let him say his idiocy then turned him upside his tiny little head. Its better to completely humiliate an idiot like Sorba, and expose him for the person he is rather than just shut him out. I think MSU did it right. They let him do his little BS speech, then they turned him upside down and inside out, to the point where he was calling doctorates of their field names. It was a self crucifixion that was worth every second to watch.
@darkwolfx333 I see your point, but this was extremely powerful. He will not forget the power of the Smith LBGT community and their supporters. He will remember their numbers and their voices and their unity and know he is fighting against the tide, not with it.
i am a libertarian rightwing NRA member. i am not a homophobe. i have friends who are gay, bi, and straight. but the point i'd like to make right now is that the fact that the protesters in this video are shouting down a speaker with the right of freedom of speech is wrong. all they're doing is discounting the right to free speech to another american with the same innaliable rights the protesters themselves possess. think about it.
That's way i fucking love the Northampton / Amherst area, it's so liberal, it's so tolerant and so British! It reminds me of Westminster, Liverpool, Manchester, leeds, protesting and liberalism at it's best! Go Gay People, Go Liberals, Go Far - Left People!
I was feeling down today talking about my fiancee about all the struggles the LGBTQ community has yet to win, and then I came here and played this video again and was reminded of all the love and support and solidarity - it soothes me every time and makes me so proud to be a part of this community ;) I especially like the commented posted from the Queer Nation co-founder and the person who spoke about being able to walk the streets. It's true. Remember Stonewall.
Also, if you check out the video "VIOLENT LESBIANS VIOLATE CIVIL RIGHTS! PART 1" you can see, about a minute and 18 minutes in, on the left of the screen, where one of the attendees actually assaults one of the protesters. So when people talk about silencing/violence, it's really the people who are promoting this kind of event who are perpetrating the violence - verbally AND physically. Shame on the Smith Republicans.
I'm proud of everyone who sttood up against bigotry. Freedom of speech includes speaking out against bigotry. And that's what those students did! As a founder of Boston's chapter of Queer Nation (who came up with the "We're here! We're Queer! Get used to it" slogan, it's great to see the baton being passed to the next queer generation! Never be afraid to stand up for your -- or anyone else's rights!
Much love to the students of Smith for standing up to this bigot. It is because of risk takers like them that we can even walk down the street safely.
Ashamed? Of this protest? Well, I am disgusted with the Smith Republicans blatant and unnecessary hostile attack on their peers. ESPECIALLY DURING THE LAST WEEK OF CLASSES. Don't talk about free speech. You know what you did was an aggressive move designed to hurt people when they are already stressed out. Absolutely uncalled for. Antagonistic kindergarten antics. BTW thanks for co-opting the free speech card for your personal attacks. inappropriate behavior!
There is a line that should be made between free speech and "Hate Speech." Mr. Sorba is ignorant; clearly not in search of the truth, only in search of a way to catagorize people he doesn't understand. This does more harm than good. But, we should also be careful that, as we believe in tollerance and diversity, we practice this as well. I was in the audience tonight, but I think a more effective protest would have been to tell him all the ways in which he is wrong rather than shut him out (up).
