  • My pec tore while the weight was in my hand not when it landed. Muscle doesn't tear from a bar hitting it. I have great grip strength I never lift with straps or anything else. Do pull ups with 100+lb attached. You ppl are hilarious.

Its not as if you just push yourself benching over 315 without being developed evenly. And I give you respect on how controlled you were with 365 and even 380 until the accident.     Nevertheless, in this type of scenario, the spotter should ALWAYS keep his hands near the bar and ALWAYS take the bar when the first attempt has failed.

    Actually, the spotters were paying attention. They got the bar off of him very quickly. His hand slipped off of the bar so quickly that unless he was in a power rack with the pins right above his throat (which is how I do my benches), there was no way they could prepare for that. That looked like 385 lbs he was benching. While the bar crashed on his left side for a sec, he'll probably come out fine. If the spotters weren't paying attention, he might be dead!

    On the one hand, I agree, the spot sucked. However, his left hand lost it's grip REAL QUICKLY! A spot is designed to give that extra little effort if you can't lift a weight by yourself. But the way his hand slipped so quickly (not sure why it did), the spotter would have basically had to hold up the entire left side of the bar.

    Personally, I do all of my benches in a squat rack. It's the best spotter in the world!

  • @johnsonsparky Its not the spotters job to catch 380 pounds of free falling weight, they are there to assist the lifter in case they get stuck. Also if a single spotter touches the weight during the lift, the lift is automatically disqualified.
