  • Wow this guy has NO idea what he's talking about!! First Jackson died in 1956 from injuries sustained in a car accident-- He was sober(for the most part, some claim he hid a bottle of cooking sherry in his studio) for a period of FOUR years, 1947-1950 and it was during that time that he had his breakthrough with the "drip" style that made him famous.

  • your not a wart on pollocks ass...prolly why you have to critique him..he was a genius

  • I see what you mean, from SEW. lol

  • BTW Jackson Pollock died in a car crash. FYI.

  • Just a wonderful example of an aimless rant. What is he on about?

  • move out of your parents basement and get help

  • Damn dude, you need a hug.

  • dude you seriously need a drink !!!!!

And like the magazine i come quick too...lol

  • you're fucking stupid, period. take that turkey baster you like to "paint" with and stop flabbing those stuttering lips long enough to shove it down you're throat.

  • Get your facts straight dumbass. Pollock stopped drinking from1950 to 1953, and was dead by 1956. Stop pontificating if you don't know what the fuck you are talking about, seriously.

  • Hey, wait. This guy got something correct. J.P. did stop drinking in August of '56.

  • Have you considered psychotherapy?

  • Judge yourself. You don't know these guys. You only know what you've read. I love their art. Artists are commonly tortured souls. How do you think they find such deep feeling to express? Why did I watch this pompous blabber anyhow? oh yeah the dick comment, wtfever.

  • Even Van Gogh was an absinthe drinker. How many artists at the level of genius can you name who did not have some sort of addiction? Here is an exercise for you: Google "List of drug related deaths" and read the Wikipedia list of famous artists who have died from their addictions. It may even be that being born as a creative genius somehow predisposes you to addiction, whether it be drugs, alcohol, smoking, or obsessive compulsive behavior. Most great artists self destruct at some point.

  • Pollock is a Dick? What a joke. You have no clue what art is and what it feels like to be an artist, obviously. The pressure he was under and the critiques who didn't believe his style was considered art. And that it was more and accident. You talk about his alcoholism and that is it. It is/was his life not yours. Talk about his art so you don't look like the dick! You nor I nor anybody knows what it is like to live as Jackson Pollock. Typical ignorant american judging others from what they see

  • This guy has not made a true factual statement in this entire video. I think he's drunk!

  • better to die than make videos like this.

  • HE'S PISSING HIM OFF.

    - Breast.

  • pollock never drank in the studio. you are the dick.

  • I concur, completely factual.

  • You can't be serious you think you're fucking special because you stopped drinking and smoking for longer then Pollock did? Fucking pathetic. People like you don't deserve art.

  • chill out

  • Hey... you got a 'dining room' & so much time on your hands etc & I got a 58 Pollack for you...

....What do you do little man? Wanna collect?....

  • You could at least get your facts straight.

Jackson Pollock was sober for one year 1937 while in rehab. After this he joined the federal art project until 1942. Pollock didn't start creating his drip paintings until 1947. In 1949 he was named Americas first great painter by life magazine. In 1954 Pollock stopped painting and succumbed to his alcoholism and depression, thus leading to his drunken car crash in 1956.

  • Get a Life dude. Drink a fucking Beer and chill out.

  • Fuck! All this anger directed at a man that died 50 years ago. Get a fucking grip you sad ponce! So you've read a couple of books.

Two years of work that mad him a legend! The rest getting drunk, sounds great to me!

  • Correction: Jackson Pollock died Aug 1956. Opinion: Pollock had a life-threatening disease; he battled it and failed. (If you had cancer, I would'nt condemn you for being incapable of completing something I EXPECTED you to be capable of completing.) I do believe he was self-destructive by nature, and irresponsibly took two others on a death ride; this is a result of the terrible disease of alcoholism. He was one of America's greatest painters. Congratulations on 3 years of sobriety.

  • are they dicks for dying or dicks for being addicts? after all, we're all going to die from the effects of excess whether we bring it upon ourselves or subjected to the excesses of others... i can see the compassion in your message, though...

  • Hating sombody for dying. Thats not new but it IS a pure 'act' of selfishness. You have a problem dude. You are free to say what you want but... some other person can not have the life and death they want because YOU think it is 'not productive enough'?

Glad to see you care..but why not care more about the person than the work that never was?

  • No my friend you are the DICK

  • Get over him - Get a life!

  • to many people complain! ....who cares about what you think you turd! ...pollock was/is a legend no matter what his problems were, they are what made him who he was................you are a feckin a'hole mate!

  • Nerd.

  • you're a douchebag.

  • ur a fucking dick at least those artist did something in their lives rather than you making this stupid video. sure jackson pollock was an alcoholic and i agree wit hthe person below it was from 1948 to 1950 with him being sober. and yeah he did make paintings before he make his splater paintings or his action paintings. its just that no one bought them because they believed that his work was too original.

  • what did they do? spalsh paint around real good... stuff huh ?

  • You can hardly compare someone like Pollock to yourself. I doubt you've had to go through what he did. Why don't you just thank him for what he did do instead of complaining about what you think he should of done you stupid arrogant cunt.

  • Why are you even wasting your breath and our time watching your stupid video just complaining about Pollock's personal life?? Appreciate his art and stop b*tching about his personal life. You're the dick, not him.

  • excuse my vulgarity, we have different opinions, hope fully my account isnt abolished if that possible.

umm. yea. but sincerly, why would you take the time to post this, you are the dick here, ok.

  • excuse me.

jackson pollock, had a mental disease, yes he was a raging alchoolic.

that was his freak for draining his sorrows. ok.

this guy, was amazing, he revolutionized expressive action painting, ok. i want to see your 140,000,000 painting.

its expressive and communicates to me.

you ass, maybe you are a bit luckier huh. where is your painting ok, this man was amazing, point.

you are a freaking bastard you fucker.

    ok, please.

    just have some respect

  • dumb ass he died in 1956 he was sober between 1948 to 1950 dumb ass

  • he lived life. stop ranting. You know he did not become all that famous until he died. I drink too....no job and worthless drip paintings all around me.

  • Just deal with your own addiction and leave the dead guys alone. Or at least do some homework before you spout off. There are dozens of books filled with things you don't know about Pollock's work, his place in art history, and American painting before him. You should crack a couple of them.

  • he was mentally ill... speak of something you know of....I hate the preaching of someone recovering..

  • he died in a car crash, and was known to have mental health problems from an early age.

  • how come you think people want to hear your bullshit? egocentric bastard, eat shit and die

  • i wish youd die from an addiction to ranting about pointless shit that no one gives a crap about.. - my opinion.

you probably dont care just as much as i dont about your opinion.

  • you ramble too much

tortured genius ,it happens, they self destruct

    not that youd know

    you arent a genius

    by a long way

    bye

  • You're a dick.

  • pathetic!

  • I'm disapointed. I thought you were going to bash on Pollock's idiotic bullcrap they call "art".

Anyone who thinks he was ligit or had talent is clueless.

    His paintings are disgusting jokes.

  • Come on he was a revolutiona! Excuse me? Clueless? Go back to and watch your Bob Ross and Kinkaid..

  • the ramblings of a complete knob.

  • humm..pollock a dick because he died of being an alcoholic....were u talking for real or were u on medication or something...whats your point?

  • I never understood nationalism.

  • Dude, go to an AA meeting and stop whining to us.

  • You, my friend, sound like a dick.

  • So Pollock's a dick cause he died as a result of his alcoholism. . . what's your excuse?

  • sigh

  • bla bla bla - does you paint , does you even know what painting is ...

anyway why are you so angry ,man - if you paint , then paint and stop talking bad about others !

  • you boring fuck. only a non-artist--or an artist without telent--would say this shit. by the way you need to read up on pollock. you have so many facts wrong. go back to drinking. you're such a fucking bore fuck without it. god you suck you bald ass fuck.

  • i always thought web2.0 was a good thing, voice of the masses etc. but then there came the blogger yuppies, who think by blogging they are on top of the world, they have mastered all of philosophy & art & culture, and rant for their 5 minutes of fame. i'm sorry man you had it and you blew it, now maybe you should start doing drugs or drinking alcohol so your businessman ass can get some creativity in it or burn yourself out.

  • Who are you to criticize? You haven't experienced everything that they did you can't possibly know what was like to live their lives. Yes, their addictions were self-destructive and tragic, and it's unfortunate that they made the decisions that they did. But that was their decision and their life. I don't think that they had a duty to the art world, this country, or any one else.

  • your like the nerd in highschool that everyone would pick on, cause we all knew you had a shitty temper and looked funny when you would start throwing a fit. then we'd just beat your ass anyways.

by the way, you got a website or something? i wanna criticize your paintings. and i hope to god you do paint, otherwise you might just come off looking like a dick or something for posting this, right?

  • heh, your the scum of the earth, art laugh's with you...

  • The video creator [VC] says that Jackson Pollock [JP] did his best work when he was sober, and he also says that ANYBODY can do the same work! He then shits on JP for not being sober enough to create MORE of the best work (that anybody can create) that the art world has/had seen.

I'm sorry, did I miss something?

  • you should talk less and read, listen and look more. who are you to judge strangers and their life struggles, or to claim that you are able to speak about artists of any caliber? you are a self-rightous, and highly ignorant, little fuk. i can't believe i wasted my time watching your therapy video. btw, pollock died in 1956; the drip paintings were made in the 40's, oh enlightened one.

  • Well that was enlightening, I mean, I always thought that Jackson Pollock was painting to please you and what you thought was needed... not to express himself... Hey, if he painted for the reasons you laid out, then it really would be complete crap.

  • a bottle can get the ball rolling

  • i can paint very well very drunk

  • You're a rambling asshole.

  • YOU are an ignorant DICK!!! Watch your video...these were guys with an ILLNESS!!!

  • He hit a tree at 80 mph

  • I guess they did what they had to do and move on.

  • furthermore what do you expect. theyve summited peak of the artworld--theyve left their mark they only have themselves to compete with, and in all probablity theyre sick of the success--it must be boring having everyone love you, not having to struggle anymore--if you look at interviews with basquiat he thought his former life was "more real"--the only reality he had left was no reality, to escape, and eventually to burn out

  • "the true path to creativity is to burn out"--basquiat. could basquiat have made the art he made had he not done drugs or lived the life he lived? i doubt it.--the reason these artists are who they are is because they could look outside the box, a box that might say "dont do drugs or dont kill yourself doing them (even if it means making masterpieces)"

  • I'm sorry chief, you are out of line and out of touch with humanity. I pity your inability to feel, and express.

  • Obviously no painter is blessed with enternal life to keep painting 4ever. Maybe he was exhausted from the ideas and less outcomes were coming from his painting. The fact of the matter is im pretty sure... he painted alot when he was drunk and Those were the paintings that made him famous... Then While he wasnt drunk he wasnt getting the same drive.. therefore he went back...

  • Okay... so i think that u need to understand that even tho he had an alcohol problem the fact that that man made it to the point that he was notice, That u have to respect.

  • I see your point and I do agree, but as you said, they didn't care.. and being those fenomenom(american, black american) it kind of happened naturaly and people get used to it... not much to do about other people's lives, specially the passed away.. now the worse part... it will happen again! just wait and see...

  • I'm not talking about them being sober. I'm talking about being so messed up that they killed themselves.

Nice view, firmpress. "Often the great work is done despite of the problem." Well said and not a popular view with the kids.

  • they never sold out. you shouldnt either and do your thing. but yeah, the fact that the first american artist couldnt be a sober one... i honestly think shouldnt be a concern.

  • and basquiat was american, but more haitian. sorry man, but it sounds like youre having trouble leaving drinking and being in the art scene, and projecting your hate on the situation to pullock and basquiat, because youre scared there are no sober role models in art, and you might not make it. 2 guys who would rather enjoy, glory, addiction, than selling out. think about it.

  • i disagree. pullock drank because he wanted to. and therefore, he had something to paint in his mind, but couldnt, until he was lacking the booze. once he invented it, he went back to booze as a muse.

  • Ultimately the artwork has to stand alone from the biography of the artist. That said, I'd rather hear someone be angry about an artist who let an addiction interfere with his career than the flip side of the coin - attributing an artist's success to mental illness or addiction or somesuch. Often the great work is done despite of the problem. You could celebrate those masterful 2 years of Pollock's.

  • Thanks for the recommendation, MarkBade. I'll check it out.

  • Ive thought the same thing but its the same debate over musicians too.

  • You should read John Updike's SEEK MY FACE. Treads on similar thoughts on a personal and human level. You would probably enjoy it anyway if you are into art, etc. Later

  • You make an interesting point about both Pollock's & Basquiat's personal demons - but so what? Yeah they messed up and went before their time - but the fact of the matter is they both left a great legacy of work that future generations will appreciate for years to come.

  • Admittedly I've liked Pollock for 1 yr (which is bad for an art student) and I've love Basquiat's paintings for years - but I don't care that 1 was a raging alcoholic and the other was filthy rich with a drug problem - whatever personal stuff going on in the background is insignificant to the body of work they created. Just appreciate the art work and stop over analysing their lives.

  • In your three years you've video-blogged. Good work.

  • You're right spawndonacle. I've gotten properly beaten up because of them. Please reference the first few comments.

  • analogy unfortunately is way off jesus was not an artist-not about artifice, glamour -fame or any that crap-he was a prophet to some a saviour. They are not saviours but entertainers like fred astaire or ellington but were slobs-totured onesThey were able to take their fucked situation and spit back a pearl of sorts for a limited time. Everyone is not supossed to have a long life. Eric dolphy died young not from drugs but.........at least we had them while we did-

  • Interesting islandcrimes. Would Christians have given Jesus a break if he was a drunk and threw himself off a cliff? I'm not sure that's the greatest analogy. But that's sort of how I see these guys. They are the saviors of the art of their time. Sometimes your life is bigger than you.

  • these artists draw apon the great power know as the unconsious-the moon-the dioysian cults of wine or other substances to liberate the creative soul from social confinments. Now this big pool of influence-the subconcious -can be the influence for great pieces of art but in another manifestation be some of the most viles deeds done by man. When trying to tap and tame its influences its hard sometimes to distill just the pure positive aspects from its savage astral shores.-givem a break!

  • Hi alexoc949. The debate is interesting: Are these artists great because of their mental illness or in spite of their mental illness? Personally, I think they are seperate. They are highly sensitive people that makes them open to being drowned in the intensity of the world. Just the same... no excuse for deadly addiction.

  • Fuck You man. No excuse for deadly addiction? What the fuck have you done in your life. Have you ever been around truly great artists in any field of work? Man! My guess is no, and with that attitude you never will. That's fine the world will have this piece of shit vlog to look upon.

  • i wonder, do you think without these artists continuely fighting their addictions that they still would have been the same?

  • Interesting perspective, heroe2 and haniable. Death often times makes you famous. It probably helped the legacy of Martin Luther King, as well. But I know for sure, I wish that guy was still around.

What if Picasso had died in his 20's or 30's? We would have missed out on a ton of good stuff.

  • ya vole ironically with his death he did make the work evolve. his death caused what we now know as the 'art market'. i think i'm correct in saying that art work wasn't fetching that much untill his death. his works rose quickly in price and started this huge industry that we have today. was this fate? www.artistnealehowells.ds4a.com

  • At the time they died they already had done more than an average person can do in a whole life-time. I think they died at the right time.

  • Oh don't try to be like Pollack just be yourself it's more original. Jean-Micheal Basquiat yes he did die of a heroin overdose but I've not heard anything stating that he was a lover to Keith Haring. You should go and see the Pollack exhibit and admire his work and not worry about his drinking problem that occured during his lifetime. Check out Roman Bearden another great African American artist. I'm not a art critic just an admirer. I thank you for your opinon too.

  • islandcrimes, I'm not exactly sure I understand what you are saying... but I think I agree with you. I know Twombly and Ryman work and agree that Basquiat has more "funkiness". I don't know Lawerence. But will definitely check him out.

  • know yourself-its seems your rant is more about yur own sruggles with addiction than anything else. The 2 artists in question went through hell to make work- a hell you have no idea about- i was once at a physcadelic forum with fred tomaselli, gary panther, guyger and others and in the middle of the lecture a similiar sentiment cameup- an anrgy 20 year older told his sob story about his addictions and his homelessness- when the point of the lecture was about tracing the history physcadelic art.

  • Cool suggestions. I'll definitely take a look at them. Thanks! You're totally right. He killed Edith Metzger that night. That's the human tragedy of all this.

  • Oh yea, take a minute if you can and look for Clifford Still

  • If you are angery at anything, it should be that he not only took himself out in a blaze, but that he took someone with him. You say anything about this? As for BLACK artists you should check out Jacob Lawrence! He far exceeds Basquait's spray paint can

  • yur outta yur mind bsquiat is the only black artist playing a subtle art brute like cy twombly or robert ryman but with more funkeyness than either of the previous and i dont believe there been a black artist since him with such abtract sublty and wit-----but jacob lawerence is smoking! incredible-one of my favorites - no question- incredible but oppiste camp from basquiat

  • That's a pretty good sentiment, Valoisentertainment. While I might not blanket all of America as shit. I would probably agree with you on the rest of the American art movement being mostly shit. Pollock was one of a couple people who put us on the art map. That's why I'm pissed he had to go and kill himself.

  • Action painting is what changed american art. Without Jackson Pollock america would be shit, actually scratch that, america's shit and Jackson Pollock is the only thing good about it!!!!! Fuck America

  • Sorry I didnt know you walked in their shoes.

  • That's an interesting topic... are great artists successful because of their mental instabilities or in spite of them? They tend to be really sensitive which makes every day life extreme. That extreme perspective shows us our every day life in amazing ways.

  • (about pollock) DO YOU think that he would be the legend that he is without the history of "decay" that he had? No man... He was american yes, but before that he was an artist... And artists dosent have a easy life... And i think that you do not know he's history, just his based movie...

  • At that time he was in Jungian therapy that influenced his more avant garde style of laying his canvas on the ground versus using an easel. His black and white show of '51 was a failure. And he never regained the greatness he had while he was sober. So, you got me on the date. My bad. But I stand by everything else.

    He's still a dick!

  • Talk about haters. You got me on the dates. Sorry. I was sitting in my back yard and didn't think I'd be scrutinized by people who I'm sure are art historians. You're right. He died in '56. Obviously he wasn't sober from '56 to '58. He was sober from '48 to '50. Read on...

  • You were sitting in your backyard and you didn't think you'd be scrutinized. Reasonable enough. Most backyards are fairly private, and what are the odds of an art historian peeking over the fence?

Except then you filmed yourself blathering in your backyard, and posted the results on the internet. Whoooooaaaaa. Time to hit the bottle.

  • He died in 1956 you f*ckin idiot.

  • Yea this is one of the worst things I have ever seen. Dude you are an idiot.

  • Damn hater. F this and F that huh? I really hope you find some happy! Lucky there is not a fact checker for youtube or you vid would only be about 55 seconds long. Good luck with your sobrity
