I think the firwt time i heard this song was in 80-something when the local PBS aired a folk song fund raiser, Arlo Guthrie introduced some gravel-ty voiced big guy who sang this song. they repeated the program so I heard it a few times, it always made me cry. never knew about Richard Thompson til about ten years later when as a guard I listened to "Beeswings" on a college station in the guard shack. @nondescript11 Why is it that RT fans tend to trash talk anyone that even attempts his material? (Let me just say that I'm a fan of Richard's as well before you tear me a new one.) When people cover a song, what they're really showing is appreciation of the material/artist. Yet every RT video I see, or any cover of one of his songs, it always turns into "Clapton cant touch Richard's guitar playing!", "Gilmour sounds like an amateur", "RT is god, everyone else is dirt". Jesus folks.
@ekaminar Not what I wa saying at all! Fine for showing appreciation but Gilmour just doesn't do it justice. The voice is weak and wavering - absolutely no soul in his rendition. BUT plenty of others sing and play it as well as the original - Bonnie Raitt's version, for one, is pure heaven!
A Richard Thompson original, Gilmour covers this simple song of unrequited love in a way that we might hear it sung on the porch of an old farmstead in the Appalachins, (likely how Thompson intended it). Gilmour's ability to translate the song this way, despite his extensive music education, displays his talent for capturing the soul of a song. For an equally beautiful version check out the soundtrack to the motion picture: "Divine Secrets Of The Ya Ya Sisterhood" produced by T. Bone Burnett
@davcnslt Definitely, it is possible that David is not the fastest one, the guitar man with the crazy riffs.. but definitely is the one with the largest feeling in this world, he tunes his guitar with the scale of soul, and well, you said that his covers keep that spirit. Cheers!
David hits the boudary of heaven with this one... Dreamy as always, and the way he has enhanced the melody with the guitar part is superb... But then, he's always been the master at melodic lead guitar... This song has provided me so much strength lately...
Bonnie Raitt's version is awful. Great voice she may have but that is not what is required to make a wonderful song. She sings it in a detached way, just like she's detached from the guitar she's holding. David Gilmour's version however is wonderful.
another stellar version, Gilmour, like Bonnie Raitt have such a pure heartfelt delivery just makes a Thompson original like this so mesmerising to listen to.
It is a wonderful thing to see David Gilmour, at any time, but here devoid of the Pink Floyd spectacle of lasers, pyrotechnics and everything associated with their show. Just a man with a mike, a guitar, some backing musicians/ singers, and pure talent. .
And neither Bonnie Raitt nor David Gilmour's version can compare to Richard and Linda Thompson's original "Dimming of the Day". But it's really cool of DG to give RT a shout out.
Hey@FrostbiteBaby, If you think Bonnie Raitt's version can even compare to this one you should have your ears removed and give them to someone who knows how to use them. You're out of your friggin' mind.

Quite the opposite in fact, he is known for being arguably the finest guitarist in the UK, vocally maybe he's not so hot, but still has a decent singing voice.
i guess it comes down to personal taste,im sure richard has many fans....i have no doubts about his ability as a guitarist.....songwriter.....but i grew up with pink floyd and for me no one can match dave gilmour as a singer, songwriter and specifically...guitarist.....
Well, i too grew up with Floyd on my turntable, i agree about personal taste, but is it not possible to appreciate many musicians at the same time, for different style's of music?
Back in the seventies i was an ardent Pink Floyd fan, still am.
