@sixesandsevensus As I understand, in 1937 most guitar players were playing bar chords and "simple" chords, even Joseph Reinhardt (the brother of Django). It seems to me it is under the influence of Django that nowadays all gypsy jazz guitarists are playing chords like Am6, E9, C6/9 and the like. I like this alot also, but the sound is much more modern!
@klemjc I don't mind it at all, so it wasn't as much of a complaint! Just seemed odd to take the Django route on the leads, which is arguably the tougher part, and shy away from the more 'traditional' voicings on the rhythm.
@menelaos16 Because it's unbelievable how the composer played with his third and fourth finger seriously injured. Yet this guy made it believeable! Well done bro!
my good sir i implore you carry on with the way of gypsy jazz, i am a blues player but gypsy jazz is another ones of my many musical loves and one day in years to come i hope to be able to play like you, my good sir i as a fellow musician salute you
@cheezypkerfrodo he HAD all four fingers they were just burnt in the fire along with his right leg, he USED the pointer and middle to play solos, the rest he used for chords if memory serves me right
@yoopermichigan The bass is an Cort electroacoustic fretless bass.
To record the video, I use a DV camera. At the same time I use Sony Vegas to record the sound, and do the re-recording. I then have to synchronize sound and video in Vegas.
Nice work! I'm working on the piece myself at the moment for an exam (hence how I came across the piece). I struggle four fingers! Out of interest, what are you playing through that run of triplets? The music I'm using has the lick going up the neck and you appear to stay in the same area (which must be much easier).
If only you had the fingerboard facing straight-on for the solo-section, just as for the chord-section, there is so much another player could have learned from this - how sad!..... well-played, nonetheless.....
No, No my friend - you have great taste, good timing, and a fine ear, and you play in the authentic Django style - so refreshing to see!
It's simply that, while a beginner might need some laborious tutorial, already accomplished players could easily pick up a few good ideas here and there, if only they could see your hands....
I love that you played the melody with only two fingers. Every time I take a friend to gypsy jazz show and I hear a Django song, I have to explain, "see that craziness that he's playing? The guy that wrote this could only use two of the fingers on his left hand." It blows everyone's mind.
@intthis he plays with 2 fingers , and that's awesome . But his music sense , his perfect sense of rhythm , his un-equaled sensitivity and musical creativity , his way to play swing , be-bop ... while always being far ahead of his time ... this guy was ... well , there are no words to describe that .
Well, it seems people played often with the usual chords before the war, even gypsy players. I think that in the version of 1937 most chords played by the two sidemen of Django are "straight".

its because django didt that way!! ... i have transcribed this solo as well... and play it with two fingers. its fun that way... but by the way... that ending chord, i heard it as a mi 9th... but how the heck are you fingering that?? ... but great job!!
You'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes. I learnt this using both options and the one where i used all of my fingers just wasn't djangofied
There are a lot of transcriptions on the internet, I am not sure I am still playing it the same way I recorded it almost two years ago anyway. Have swing!
I think it's great. The beginning is not bad at all - just not what some are accustomed to. Some old blues players do that intentionally. Great job. Beats what I can play, sor sure.
Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli are definitely playing the intro together. And I hear bends on the guitar at some points during the intro. Maybe I play them too systematically and not perfectly.
It's no big deal actually, I do no not pretend to play exactly like Django!
