I tried to copy the visual aesthetics of this scene for one of my finals at film school. I love this scene in Blade Runner and didn't really do it justice... but do you guys mind checking it out and letting me know what you guys think? Thanks. :) youtube.com/watch?v=YOphFl88U-g
...funny how all these people that upload the classic "tears in the Rain" scene speak so highly of it but ALL the uploads are in crappy 240p resolution! FAIL!!!...
Science fiction at its best. Because Batty's words, expression, the hurt and pain from witnessing all that he did, he injected your mind with his descriptions of spectacular events, or "moments", so that you imagined it, rather than some geeks in a CGI cubicle doing it all for you.
@StickamChicks Well, that isn't confirmed. Even the fact that Gaff knows about Deckards unicorndream isn't an exact proof. They took the memories of the cousin of Dr. Eldon Tyrell and gave them to Rachael. So it is possible they took Deckards memories to plant them in a 'replacement' for him, because he betrayed them.
Wow, I watch this scene now and again and it always makes me well up. So beautiful.
BTW, I prefer this version to "final cut", because here the dove flies off into surreal blue skies, it feels slightly out of place, and perhaps the only point in the movie with blue sky, so it seems all the more poignant. In "final cut" it flies off into the more dark skies, so for me makes less of an impact. Maybe it's just what you are used to, but i will always love the director's cut more because of this.
The director's cut is the best. The people in Hollywood cut parts out because they were "too artsy" and philosophical. They needed a action movie to sell, not a film to make people think. Fuck Hollywood.
Well to me the whole film was an epiphany on mortality, and what we make of our lives. That at the end of the day there is nothing more valuable then our experience of life, and it's the one thing we can't pass onto another. That gives life value, and in turn is part of the reason Batty saves Decker's life at the end, along with Decker's show of defiance at death when he spat at Batty.
But yes, the last moments was Batty finally getting that in the end all have to face the same ending.
First time I watched this it was like a physical punch in the gut. It's such a profound and poetically beautiful moment. But it was tinged with the sadness and bitter irony that it took someone considered less the human to show the greatest understanding about the preciousness of life and freedom. Oh, and anyone else ever thought the release of the dove all represented Batty having made peace with his own mortality?
Good justification, but I thought the release of the dove was supposed to signify the release of the android's soul, as though he had a passions worthy of a human soul.
I thought that was obvious, but maybe not. Hauer wore these great lines himself.
Harrison Ford was really good in the new Bruno film as well.....

Memorized it in 1982, and still know it by heart. This scene is so much better w/o the voiceover.
