The two main - media promoted - candidates are telling people what it is they want to hear. Informed and aware Americans know and understand this. I think it is unreasonable to assert that we can totally get away from the use of fossil fuels - but it can be reduced. In reality, much of American society is geared to consumption not conserving. The United States has compromised herself, and it is not just concerning oil.
Many Americans are in bondage to debt - credit cards, etc., and are snared in the idea that credit equals cash. (And it does) The government also reflects that in the enormous debt owed as well. It is made so easy that even someone's dog can gain a credit card. If we burn up what reserves - I hear about 60 years worth; less than one lifetime - we have we will only come around full circle back to going elsewhere for fuel.
The United States is in conflict with many nations around the world, and I'm not surprised that the cost of fuel is not even higher than it is. I've talked to people around me who have lost awareness of the fact of our nation being at war at all. I fault the Administration for that in being intentional deceptive with the American public. Being at war would - of course - be a strain on American resources. World War II saw food and gas rationing.
With this conflict in the Middle East it is being revealed how the U.S. has compromised herself with the regions we are struggling with. If we maintain our position in Iraq for instance, and maybe cause Iran to bristle, the increased 'turning of the screw' as far as oil prices is not unexpected. In my household I'm starting to get out from the credit cards I have, and pay stuff off - build a savings, (feed the pig org) and am conserving. This 'let them eat cake' mentality will be our downfall.
