  • I think this scene was actually a good argument for atheism.

  • Jesus came to Earth,to Die for our Sins....You can either Believe or not...God created all of us with a FREE will......Our Fate is ours ...He wrote the TRUTH in the Bible...You can choose....Archaeologists have proven the Bible to be true...over and over...If you care for your Life ,,,,Lokk up the account of Mary K Baxter,on You Tube,...She actually got taken to Heaven and to Hell...Jesus has done this,..So she can Fore warn Humankind of the Perils of Hell and the Majesty of Heaven...You Choose.

  • To me , Paul is the first betrayer of Jesus message ...

  • There's just way to many problems with this idea of christianity for it to have any credibility whatsoever.

  • I see guys like this in the local mall, yelling at people as they pass by about miracles and Jesus...Some things never change.

  • this movie doesn't have nothing with Bible...and real facts.

Cross has big power in exorcism...only becouse Jesus was die on cross.Bible has power...becouse this is word of Jesus and GOD.

    Holy water has power.

    Scorsese just loser...and freemason...btw.

  • @Kajensey3 Scorsese didn't write it... it was based on a fictional novel by Nikos Kazantzakis. It is not supposed to be an accurate portrayal of Christ's last moments before his death. Instead, we are shown an internal struggle of Jesus as a human searching for his importance as the messiah, and the altered view on mankind that would ensue had he not been crucified. Again, entirely fictional but still very thought-provoking unlike many films in the modern day.

  • Presenting Jesus like this is of course disputable a bit, but that bloody bastard is presented very well. Antichrist himself. It is nice that he put childish things away, so it is for sure that he is not going to bore anybody in Kingdom of Heaven.

  • this is the end of the film isn't it? damnit...

  • Brilliant brillant scene...it shows how a normal man with extraordinary ideas of his time was turned into a diety by a creep who wanted to exploit his name for power...since then, millions have died and murdered in HIS name...

This is why i am not a Christian. Period.

  • @jwgoon

Yeah, Paul was SUPER-POWERFUL, you know, being killed in a state persecution by Nero and all that.

  • The REAL Trinity, Three Jesus’

1.Yashu’a Bar Maryam – Jesus The Son of Mary (The true one; a Messiah) (John 1:45)

2.Simon Bar Jesus – Son of Jesus and Mary Magdalene (Christ) (Acts 13:6)

3.Cleophas, Jesus-Justus, Saint Issa – Son of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony (Holy Ghost) (Colossians 4:11)

You (Christians) should ask yourself, which Jesus of your Bible are you following? I just mentioned the three prominent Jesus’, there are many more....

  • The most powerful line in the film is when Paul says - "I created the truth out of what people needed and what they believed". The creation of Christianity in a nutshell.

  • this trully has passioned me enough... i have watched this movie hundred times, brilliant for scorsese.

  • 5:09 hahaha.

  • @Medinita1

That they love Gibson's grotesque snuff film more than this is .....well....to cheesily quote Yoda:

    "That is why you Fail."

  • Utter blasphemy.

  • @Msstephcurry30

Hey, at least it doesn't contradict itself...unlike _some_ books I could name. : )

  • One of my favorite scenes of any movie ever

  • It is true! people need Jesus Christ ! God bless all who put together this great nd beautiful scripture into more practical. We in Ghana can feel it.like a light shining on the mountain. by boywadon, emadesoa!!!

  • see the whole film first before making any criticisms.....he doesn't sin in the film, its more like he imagines what life would be like if he didn't get crucified and lived a normal life....imo, it's like Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life." Arguably the greatest Jesus film ever.

  • @Vash1286 That's exactly what I tell people--"It's a Wonderful Life for Jesus"

  • This scene explains reality & made up faith. Every religion as its facts, usually a few, and the made up colourful fabrics or sweeteners for the masses.

We would be fools to believe every single word of every religion to be fact & real.

  • In this culture of many chess pieces and few chess players, I'm not surprised that most people think TLToC is some sort of assertion of How It Really Was. Nor am I surprised that so few see it as a work of speculative fiction examining "possibilities." If 95% of the population thinks mostly in all-or-nothing terms and has a very limited capacity for tolerating ambiguity or conflict, I wouldn't expect many people to "get" this film, anymore than they didn't "get" Kevin Smith's "Dogma.

  • I think this clip is fan-dang-tastic. BTW, dumdums, it's a work of art, not historical scholarship--the Jesus-Paul confrontation is making a point about the gap between the historical Jesus & the Christ of faith.

  • @Twinklebunny1 historical Jesus and the Christ of faith?

  • The only objection I have to the ideas portrayed in this clip is that Paul spread the false message of a resurrected Jesus for the benefit of mankind. I think it's much more likely that he was a con man, who was doing it for the benefit of taxing gullible peasantfolk.

  • @benben42

Wasn't Paul executed for his teachings? Opportunists usually don't give their lives like that.

  • @benben42

And didn't he live in poverty only supported by alms for the poor. Opportunists generally don't renounce wealth and live in poverty. I'm not a big fan of Paul but I'm confused where you got your information. It doesn't seem to be right.

  • @benben42 Yeah, there was something just wrong about this scene.. It was like they were telling a lie to promote a lie...

  • Is that Harry Dean Stanton as the Apostle Paul? He's really good in this role.

  • Everyone commenting about how this is a distortion of The Bible is missing the point. In the scene, Paul is talking about *you*, the true believers. You need Jesus. He makes you happy. He makes you so happy that you're willing to die. It doesn't matter for you if it's true or not, because it's what you need.

And, true to form, you act in the exact way that the story demonstrates: you are those people who would take Jesus and kill him for Paul's word, because you need Paul more than him.

  • @SummerSeale

I think, the point was rather, that Paul did not speak at all. This is just an image of a possible Paul in the mind of the actually crucified Christ - a fear of abuse by fanatics.

I consider it to be an oversimplification to project that - still fictional - sentiment upon the early historical catholic church.

Though Your discomfort with present 'evangelicals' and other cultists seems to be reasonable to me.

  • I love how Judas speaks with a Brooklyn accent.

  • This is among my favorite scenes in the film. As a Christian, I have a command of my faith. I do not fear the philosophy of this book or film. In fact, I find this scene and Paul as he appears here, to be supportive of the way the narrative actually works out in the gospels. This "fever dream/temptation" of the Jesus in this story shows how he in fact did have to die on Calvary.

  • Blasphemy! This movie is so disturbing and sickening.

  • @xiaolong143 how exactly? o.O

  • @HorsePower955 the movie says it all, even if you put a disclaimer on it, that still mocks Jesus Christ my Savior. You can say that the movie was not based in the four gospels but still Jesus was maliciously dethroned out of that movie.

  • A lot of lies, just this part of film is truthful, because Paul never was disciple or apostle of Jesus. Paul never, never understood Jesus' Teachings.

  • @eloaharcturus there is a disclaimer in the beginning of the film, it was not based on the gospels, was fictional. fictions are imaginary. they aren't about facts, truth and lies. this film is taken too seriously, it's like watching toy story and then saying ''it's lies, toy's don't talk!''

  • @HorsePower955 Paul contradicts the teachings of Jesus. That is why Christianity is dead. God is within your heart. Look for Him, there inside you!!!

  • @eloaharcturus

Totally. The Kingdom of Heaven is within you.

Its like the Matrix. No one can be told about it, you have to see it for yourself, and you have to want to see it, to seek it. Seek, and you shall find.

  • Pardon the pun, but this is the crux of the whole film.

  • wait I dont understand this... can someone explain it to me???

  • i have NEVER seen a movie like this, loved it since it came out in '88.

truth? historically accurate? nah. but an idea...an idea. and a vision. wouldn't any Messiah be happy to have given his life for that...if not for that, then for what..?

  • This is my favorite scene in the film and one of my fave scenes from any Scorcese film!

  • What if Jesus actually came back? No one would agree it was him, they'd be too busy arguing over his message trying to get him into their camp. No one agrees on him as it is. After a short while they'd just crucify him all over again for not being what they want him to be. The real Jesus could never be as good as their idea of him.

  • jesus was not gods son he was a prophet god gave jesus his power to heal not jesus and this scene shows how easily an untrue version of jesus life could have been spread paul was a cunt he had the cheek to lie and make up loads of untrue stories about a man he never met im surprised jesus didnt beat the crap out of him what would u do if someone u never met was talking shit anout u ud either take legal action or beat the shit out of them go jesus defend yourself

  • This scene always makes me shudder, because it basically shows that the Church would have been started by Saul/Paul whether or not Jesus died on the cross. Jesus the man is no longer relevant; only Jesus the icon matters now.-- "You know, I'm glad I met you, because now I can forget all about you."

Whatever may have been different in the temptation/vision of Jesus in this film, we are shown that Paul will popularize a church based upon him either way. what really happened is irrelevant to him.

  • William Dafoe, the worst reprise of Jesus in film history, bar none. The best......Robert Powell.

  • @14stations

The director would transmit an another, moreover esoteric perspective of Jesus preach on earth.

    Sorry for my english

  • I havent watch the movie though, so correct me if im wrong here.. this movie is concerning the life of Jesus on earth before he resurrects to heaven right? Then why is Paul in the picture? Paul only came much later after Jesus had risen, not wheh he was still a man on earth. I sound confused about this particular scene.

  • You have to watch it yourself to understand, if someone tells u they will ruin the story for you. But everything make sense in the movie don't worry, people who made this movie and the guy who wrote the book know the true story very well but they made a fictional alternative version. And they did great trust me.

  • @IzkariotPriest Thanks alot. Will watch the movie real soon.

  • Stop smart assing here... You watch the movie, you come and talk

  • Jesus did not die on the cross. The did not raise on the third day. He did not asscend after crucifixon. He lived 82 years and died in Srinagar, Kashmir where his tomb lies.

He ascended in Spirit. He came to teach us how loving.

  • Such a powerfull scene. I love it. :)

  • youre a jerk

  • if the whole bible is his word, then you're right

  • William Dafoe= Buddy Christ

  • Harry Dean Stanton, what a character.

  • we are all children of god as well as every atoms which fill space

  • @toffangersvideo wow thx for praisin pops like that

  • Satan says "quiet"at 3:30- This is key, for those who interpret this literally. If this is actually how it happened, then its all in vain. Paul/ Saul is a Liar.

but its brilliant , in that the temptation to meet mans end is what troubles Christ.

  • This is a gnostic take on the history of the Christianity, which I share. Chris Gorman de Paul, Biologist and Filmmaker, Harvard, Visiting Scholar, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX

  • I honestly believe that this is as close to Jesus as we'll ever get.

"There was only one true Christian and he died on the cross."- Nietzsche

  • This is an artist's interpretation of the Story, with a little Taoism thrown in. In this sequence, Jesus is having an "Its A Wonderful Life" episode, where he explored all the following events, if He HAD denounced His plan for Salvation. When He sees what a negative turn that it leads to, he chooses to remain humble & die on the cross, instead of refusing His destiny.

I'm not offended by this movie, being a Xian artist..

  • True Christians DO NOT remove his name with an X! The same goes for Christmas (Christ's Mass) not Xmas!

This movie is a little offensive, in that it acts like Christ had a "do over". The fact that he endured the pain, when he could have inceinerated everthing in His sight, with just a thought. He showed us truly how to turn the other cheek.

  • TRUE Xians CAN.

Look up th REAL reasons, 4 th "X", here, on Youtube- "Does Xmas 'X' Christ Out"

This isnt the only source of info, on ths, bt th most neatly condensed.

Also, I CAN see how it can be "a little offensive" to those, who know nothing of Taoist "this" & pre- Christ "that". But, after looking into these philos, REWATCH the movie, with a poet's mind & see if it strikes you, differently.

"Contact" 4 inst, I HATED that movie but I know more nw about God so I had to watch it, AGAIN.

  • @MarcusDarling4026 Xian artist???haha yea

  • @ReggaeMusic3

    What??

    *shrugs shoulders*

I was running out of available characters! lol

Besides, in an age where all type has 2 b abbrev 2 get ur point in, I don't see y ppl cant use abbvs like Xian, Bddst, Mslm, instead of having 2 type the whole long word "Christian".

    I know- I know-

"Christians aren't sposed to use the X, like they hate its use, in Xmas!"

-but I don't celebrate Xmas, either (no Santa, tree, holly, secular / pagan activities).

    Does "Crstnz" work, any better?

    Nahh!

  • alien intervention story retold to us ! from millions of yrs ago !

  • This film is just one person's theory, train of thought, we are just humans and it will always be hard for us to really comprehend what really took place. even if the facts looked at us straight in the face we still wouldn't believe it. For he is to divine....

  • A movie that proves there are people in the world without their heads up their fucking assholes. Those that aren't dreaming of some vigin born magic hippie that got pegged up to save the world and mans salvation. I mean really, the idea alone is funny in itself

  • The last tempetion of christ is just a book and it is fictional like the Da Vinci Code. Kazatzakis wrote a story not a scientific book. Why all these angry reactions? I believe in God and Christ but I wasn't offended by the film.

  • Like the bible too maybe?

  • This is the only film you need to see about Jesus. You can still have The Bible if you want the standard account of Christ's life (which doesn't play well at all as a picture). It is by far the most spiritual and intelligent film ever made on the subject. The Passion? Snuff. But the religious right can have it. The rest of us can keep our grown-up films.

  • Great movie.

  • The last temptetion of Christ is based on Nikos Kazantakis book. So watch your mouth dickhead!!!!!!!!!!

  • The ironic thing is, the virgin birth is NEVER mentioned by Paul in his epistles, though he refers to Jesus as "born of a woman."

Interestingly, Paul spends an ample portion of most epistles defending his credentials as an apostle against those who pointed out the fact that he never saw Jesus in the flesh.

  • Virgin..which they took actually... means young woman and it actually refers to a woman being born under the sun sign virgo.......ignore all in the bible. The christ wasn't religious and neither is God.Jesus rejected the scriptures and religious people......" you harden the hearts of men against God......you slam the door of heaven in their faces ! "

  • @propergeezer31

Just a short correction: Jesus accepted the scriptures.

Matthew 5:17 "...not the least stroke of a pen will disappear from Moses' and all the prophets' writings"

  • This is great.. yeah.. this is while he's on the cross. It's foresight and done with a really perverse angle of man in the 1980's.. but honestly, your savior?

  • @ihavestage4coolness

I'm curious: what all goes into you saying "... but honestly, your savior?"

  • Great scene!

  • Ha...!

It's easy to get caught up in the drama..forgetting a very simple fact that this film is based on a fictional story..NOT THE WORD OF GOD.

If YOU are firm in your FAITH..firm in the "WORD"..movies like this would make you laugh..rather than get upset over.

  • THE WORD? Like you would even know what it was.

King James made your book. Maybe you should look him up.

  • There is so many hateful comments on so many religious videos, why is this?

  • I rented the movie just to see if it was as bad as I thought it was. It was. Anywho, if you are looking for a good movie about Jesus that's intriging and makes you think, I recomend "Jesus Christ Superstar" with ZTen Neely and Carl Anderson.

  • you should watch the movie with an open mind. better yet: read the book.

you can't just take a small clip out of context and make a judgement based on that.

  • You're wrong. The film makes no attempt to portray the reality of Jesus Christ. It is simply an exercise in theology...and a brilliant one at that.

"They have paid Christ the compliment of taking him and his message seriously, and they have made a film that does not turn him into a garish, emasculated image from a religious postcard. Here he is flesh and blood, struggling, questioning, asking himself and his father which is the right way."-- Roger Ebert

  • @TulseLuper Lol you do know that Roger Ebert is an atheist right??

  • @EnTuRedAmpliada Your point?

  • @TulseLuper You just made it, thanks.

  • @EnTuRedAmpliada Oh I see, so only people who agree with your beliefs are allowed to judge this film? Okay then. Look up "Movies that Shook the World" on YouTube, and watch Part 3 of the Last Temptation episode. You will find quite a few clerics hailing it as a masterpiece, including an Archbishop. They seemed to agree with Ebert wholeheartedly. So yeah, what was your point again?

  • @TulseLuper Lol, I never said anything about MY beliefs. And no thank you, I don't wish to look up anything on "movies that shook the world". I've got a mind and will of my own, I think i'll look up some Ren and Stimpy instead lol.

  • @TulseLuper Roger Ebert is quoted as saying "i am not a believer"..how in the world would he know what the "right way" is? He is a self-described humanist..

  • wonderful scene - sums up the WHOLE POINT

  • Yes - the scene is written and played well by the author.

So well, that it can be easily misunderstood if parts are looked upon isolated.

Nikos Kazantzakis constructed that smart blonde girl at his side as a fallen angel.

This scene is part of an imagined life in the moment of death.

The author seemed to have thought a lot about the contradicting drives within man.

  • "...that small blonde girl at his side is a fallen angel" That's interesting. That's the first I've ever heard of that. It kinda makes sense that a fallen angel would tempt Jesus.

I'm curious: Does the film portray the small blonde girl as a fallen angel?

  • @almostblue22

unfortunately I have still not read the novel. But the movie proves that Kazantzakis should not be mistaken as an iconoclast.

    follow the greentortouise ...

  • i made my dad watch this movie, when he saw this part he said "i always knew paul was a asshole".

  • harry dean stanton?

  • yep.

  • A Scorsese/Schrader classic scene.
