I work for a holistic vet in NJ that sells raw diet for our carnivore companions- dogs and domestic cats! Like the big cats and wolves they eat mostly meat in the wild. Their ancestors wouldn't whip out a frying pan after they kill a prey animal. As many see their outdoor cats like to hunt mice and birds! It seems cruel to us but this is what nature intended! We see good results from feeding them good quality raw meat, organs like tripe and finely ground veggies, plus supplements.
I was reading comments from another site that was actually criticizing BCR for feeding the cats dead chickens and other animals. WTH? Thats what cats eat! I mean, nature is cruel, but it works together for the survival of the animals. You cannot turn cats into vegetarians...they will die without meat. It's just cruel to feed them meat. At least they don't feed them live animals, though that's what cats are supposed to be eating. That choice was taken away from these cats because of humans.
I'm sorry you can't afford to not eat meat. However, most of these cats are endangered species through no fault of their own or "natural selection". It is solely man that has brought about the critical endangerment of many of these species. They are trying to keep these animals on this planet.......they are necessary for our very delicate eco-system.
Does your country have programs that you can access for food? I do hope so. I am sorry for your situation...:(
@Suisei humans can eat raw meat, when you get sick from it is when it has bacteria or other things that get humans sick. the system of tigers and Lions have adapted to have a very good immune system, thats why they dont get sick, a human can actually eat raw meat thats clean of germs and be fine.
i do not agree to kill other animals and feed the tigers this is crazy unless feed them with dadly animals if they like meet ,or feed them with crocodiles, pitons, sharks, wolfs, bears somthing like them....
It's funny how you were talking about diets and allergies. I have a house cat who is allergic to, of all things, beef! She gets a diet from the veterinarian that is pork based instead. It's kind of bland, and she's not always happy about it, but beef actually makes her physically ill to her stomach and she vomits. Do you have any cats allergic to beef?
u guys should get at least 20 or 10 acre forest and put live rabbit and deer so the tiger can get there ability to catch there own prey. and when old enough put them back to the wild same for any other big cats :)
@coocrow We wish we had the room and the money to be able to do that, except for the live prey part. That's just not needed our cats will never be released back into the wild again, this is very rarely done. What we need to do is preserve habitat for cats already in the wild, if we can't do that what's the point? Thanks for watching :)
What do you have to do to get a job cutting the meat and feeding these animals? btw thanks for posting this, their is not much information about this that i've been able to find.
@6kramer Job vacancies very rarely arise at BCR and if so there's always dozens of trusted volunteers that apply. You can find out how to volunteer at BigCatRescue*org Thanks for watching! :)
shouldn't you be feeding the cats a little less than 5 times a week? because in the wild they dont get that much food, maybe once or twice a week.......doesn't this make them overweight? and they can eat everything right? even dead deer and stuff cuz in tyhe wild thats what they'll do wont they?
@reesaable You're right, but in the wild they would gorge on their prey consuming 3-4 times what we feed them every day at BCR. They usually get between 15-20lbs on a full feed day at the sanctuary and we change the amounts according to certain cats. They can eat most anything, we do not feed anything like deer though, we only use certified meat products :)
Hey there I have a few questions I hope you don't mind me asking but I have to do a zoo project on these creatures. What treats can you give the cats? What shouldn't you feed to the tigers.
Also how do you guys safely feed them in the first place?
@Purrfitlittleangel It's no problem :) We make all sorts of treats for the cats, we make bloodcicles, sardini martinis (frozen sardine popsicles) ditty bags and cardboard tubes filled with meat treats and covered in different scents like nutmeg, cinnamon, catnip etc... Tigers eat pretty much any meat, obviously you should never give them anything with paint/glue/plastic on this could cause a blockage and require surgery.
@Purrfitlittleangel All our enclosures have a smaller 8ft by 4ft wide cage on the side with a sliding door to separate from the larger enclosure. We shut all the doors about 30 minutes before feeding time, so when we go with the food the tigers are away from us at a safe distance then we can place the food on their tray then open the door back up :) Hope this helps!
Hi, you say you deworm the tigers every month or so for parasites and stuff but doesn't freezing the meat kill the parasites? I feed my domesticated cats a raw diet and since I don't notice any vomiting, diarrhea or any other symptoms of worms, I don't deworm. Does feeding a raw diet to my cats at home mean I have deworm them like you deworm your tigers?
@ayesha080 They wouldn't pick up worms form the diet we feed them, it's more of a safety thing because they do live out side, we do get squirrels/raccoons etc on the property, so we de-worm them because of this. It's still a good idea to de-worm your domestic cats, if they live inside or outside etc...
LOL American beef is very tough (toughest beef in the world). Even tigers have to chew it real hard before swallowing...That's why the Americand grind their beef (hamburger) in order to make it easier to chew...hihihih
Yep! They use their back teeth to chew, when you see them tilt their head to the side and grind together :) But many of our cats scoff big old chunks down!
free animals from zoo's thats not how their life is spose to be... thats soooo artificial.... governments just look for any possible way to make money.. no matter what they have to sacrifice
Thank you for such an informative and fun video! Just one question....you mentioned a topical treatment that you do once a month for fleas and such. HOW in the world do you put Frontline on a 500lb pound tiger and still keep your fingers?!?!? :-O
Thanks for watching! Our volunteer vet as got her method worked out well using a syringe (without the needle) I think she places a small chunk of meat on their food slab when they are eating simply squirt the treatment on from a distance! We want to do a video about this in the future so keep watching!
I'm in love with all big cats espeacilly Tigers, but i have a question , the tigers, lions, and other big cats u have in there did they ever get involved in a fight? Keeping them in cages will help reduce the rate of a fight but accidents can happen u know?
I disagree, he is extremely fascinated by them and their behavior. Therefore, he used his talent of communicating with the beautiful animals, to learn about their ability to trust humans. Also, a humans ability to trust them.
He doesn't want them to be posed as good "pets", and the reason why he is completely against contact with the animals, is because not everyone raises them.
We don't breed cats to "perform" and live their lives in cages and we do not have contact with any of our cats, this just promotes the idea that they can be owned and make good "pets"
Hope you make it to the states sometime in the future, I'm glad france doesn't have the same problems that we have over here! I have heard of Kevin Richardson, I've seen the videos where he interacts with big cats, which seems like a very bad idea to me!!
I'm sure the cats would enjoy live meals everyday, but read the reply above to explain why we don't do this. All our cats will remain in captivity for the rest of their lives, there are very very few captively bred animals that are released back into the wild, this just isn't the way to make the difference we need to conserve habitat and protect the cats already in the wild if we can't do this we're in trouble :(
We get this question a lot...firstly everyone who works and volunteers at BCR is obviously a friend of the animals and wouldn't want to see this if it's not absolutely necessary. Secondly it would be fun for the cats but they don't need to keep their hunting skills intact they will be captive for the rest of their life unfortunately. Then it comes down to logistics and cost of feeding live prey to 140 big cats, it would take us forever! Then there's always the chance that a cat could get injured
First of all, do you think the animals ever miss hunting for live preys? I know its not so humane to feed live animals but I don't think we should keep away from their true nature either. For example, live bunnies that aren't bred to be pets. I gotta say, fresh meat > frozen then thawed.
They come to us already frozen from an off site facility, not sure how they are harvested, but I'm sure it's in the most humane way possible as we check out all our suppliers.
The tiger and the lion eat their kills or in this case their food not by their carnies, but by their carnassials which are used like scissors to slice off chunks of flesh from the carcass.
Just think of all the poop we pick up each day!!! We get no government support so all the food is payed for from tour revenue, individual donors and company sponsorship :)
They all get about the same really, some of our larger males will get a bit more food etc... depends on the cat too, some are real picky eaters others just gulp it all down so fast it looks like you didn't feed them!
When I go visit my mom in Tampa next year I would love to come out and visit BigCatRescue. These animals are so fascinating, I wonder if they also have baby or tiger cubs at their complex.
We don't breed at the sanctuary, there are far too many mature cats out there that need a home, there's definitely no reason to breed more cats to spend their lives living in cages, hope you make it to BCR for a tour! :)
Yep! except we don't feed our cats on sunday, this is their fasting day, as they would only eat a few times a week in the wild and when we come to feed them monday night and they aren't interested in their food, we know there may be a problem with that cat. Then weds night is rat and bone night, a lighter feeding day!
Perhaps its a cost issue, I can imagine it gets expensive to care for and buy all the live food. plus transport..... These people arnt gods. their just trying to do the best they can.
Hi, firstly Big Cat Rescue is a sanctuary for these cats not a zoo, there are many reasons we don't feed out live prey, it's just cruel, the cats could become very excited/aggressive when chasing the live food and may hurt themselves in their enclosure, the logistics of handing out live prey to over 130 big cats 6 times a week would be very difficult and time consuming, cost would be an issue and also the fact that the live "prey" could actually injure the cat, claw/beak etc...
Big cats are easier to care for when you compare them to primates for example. They sleep alot during the day and become more active at night. Our cage design is good because of this, they are not locked into smaller area at night and so can sleep under the stars at night. O f course we make all kinds of different enrichment for them and feed them a varied diet including whole prey and bones once a week.
It's too bad people consider these anmals has pets! It's funny how they want a Tiger for a pet and when the tiger gets aggressive, they all the sudden aren't so cute anymore! Gee these are top predators did you think the tiger was going to have a golden retriever personality...really! I find it funny how people see video of someone with a tiger or lion and then believe they aren't dangerous! I applaud Big Cat Rescue for your efforts to help these animals live a somewhat normal life!
And I finally realized something, on why BCR sounded familiar. not only r u guys in my hometown, but you were also on an Animal Planet show, The Most Extreme. I forgot which animal they were talking about, i think maybe leopards
Not sterilized, they have tough digestive systems and tend to drag meat we feed them off the food block onto the ground anyway! We just buy in approved, quality meat.
it would be cool if you had hunting grounds and let the cats hunt a live donated pet horse...it would keep them fit too if the horse had room to run away
Hi, great videos! I hope to get over there one day! Quick question. Researching raw diets I read about cats, (domestic/wildcat) having "low thirst drive" and getting water mainly from moisture content of prey due to desert dwelling. Is this true and is this the same for any of the larger cats? Thanks! Hope to see you and all the big cats soon! 'Specially the snow leopard :)
Hi, thanks, I'd say this is true our big cats don't really drink a great deal, we feed them whole prey as you can see in the video. Hope you make it to the sanctuary some day, did you know we give our two snow leopards Hercules and Cloe bottled water? This is because in the wild they would be drinking pure glacial run off etc...
Private ownerships is banned in 18 states, California is one of them and believe me this is a very good thing for you and the cats! We don't do any breeding, these cats make horrible "pets" they cost a fortune to feed, require a large enclosure, specialist vet care, they don't want to be around you as they get older and if you wanna go on vacation, what do you do with your 500lb lion? We are trying to get all states to ban private ownership, as it's always the cats that suffer.
Tigers and lions will probably attack you whenever they have half a chance! Quite a few of ours are food aggressive, but we always feed our tigers and lions when they are separated in the other part of their cage so we have nothing to worry about!!!
Hi. Unfortunately I don't live in Florida. I live in Chicago. I wish you guys were here. I would volunteer for those beatiful animals. Sorry for this late reply by the way.
I wish I could do a volunteer job for the cats in your place...I AM SOOO OBSESSED WITH THEM...and I always wanted something to do with them...I LOVE THOSE ANIMALS

can you feed the cats veg with their meat like potatoes and carrots etc it may be good for them and work out a little bit cheaper for you.

@TerryMMA85 They get all the nutrients they need from the prepared carnivore diet, they wouldn't eat the veggies :)

@TerryMMA85 Or you can just give the cats cyanide tablets and spare the veggies.
Because the result will be the same.

hi wichs eats more lion or tiger i ask because they are around same size but maybe one is more hungry than other lol.
.i like your web
jjoskee 2 years ago
They all get about the same really, some of our larger males will get a bit more food etc... depends on the cat too, some are real picky eaters others just gulp it all down so fast it looks like you didn't feed them!

When I go visit my mom in Tampa next year I would love to come out and visit BigCatRescue. These animals are so fascinating, I wonder if they also have baby or tiger cubs at their complex.
VentureCapitalist202 2 years ago
We don't breed at the sanctuary, there are far too many mature cats out there that need a home, there's definitely no reason to breed more cats to spend their lives living in cages, hope you make it to BCR for a tour! :)

LOL at 1:25. He came outta nowhere, and the sound is hilarious.

They feed live prey in Chinese zoos. I've seen clips of it...
ncfwhitetigress 2 years ago
Yes, unfortunately you are correct.
BigCatRescue 2 years ago
I can't imagine the quantity of meat you need per day to feed them all...
pimprenath 2 years ago
It's around 500lbs per day!
BigCatRescue 2 years ago
r u fucking serious???
ncfwhitetigress 2 years ago
Yep! except we don't feed our cats on sunday, this is their fasting day, as they would only eat a few times a week in the wild and when we come to feed them monday night and they aren't interested in their food, we know there may be a problem with that cat. Then weds night is rat and bone night, a lighter feeding day!

The zoo purports to uphold animal rights yet they will not let the predators hunt for food. This is done out of political correctness..
sLowd09 2 years ago
Perhaps its a cost issue, I can imagine it gets expensive to care for and buy all the live food. plus transport..... These people arnt gods. their just trying to do the best they can.
flakcflak 2 years ago
Hi, firstly Big Cat Rescue is a sanctuary for these cats not a zoo, there are many reasons we don't feed out live prey, it's just cruel, the cats could become very excited/aggressive when chasing the live food and may hurt themselves in their enclosure, the logistics of handing out live prey to over 130 big cats 6 times a week would be very difficult and time consuming, cost would be an issue and also the fact that the live "prey" could actually injure the cat, claw/beak etc...
BigCatRescue 2 years ago
I hate it when rabbit got treated as domestic live stock. they are so beautiful and special.
AdvertChild98 2 years ago
Big cats are easier to care for when you compare them to primates for example. They sleep alot during the day and become more active at night. Our cage design is good because of this, they are not locked into smaller area at night and so can sleep under the stars at night. O f course we make all kinds of different enrichment for them and feed them a varied diet including whole prey and bones once a week.
BigCatRescue 2 years ago
It's too bad people consider these anmals has pets! It's funny how they want a Tiger for a pet and when the tiger gets aggressive, they all the sudden aren't so cute anymore! Gee these are top predators did you think the tiger was going to have a golden retriever personality...really! I find it funny how people see video of someone with a tiger or lion and then believe they aren't dangerous! I applaud Big Cat Rescue for your efforts to help these animals live a somewhat normal life!

1:25, the lion's like "MINE!"
And I finally realized something, on why BCR sounded familiar. not only r u guys in my hometown, but you were also on an Animal Planet show, The Most Extreme. I forgot which animal they were talking about, i think maybe leopards
liviynator 2 years ago
Yep, I think that was focused on Reno, one of our leopards who we had to teach to climb, after he retired from a circus.?
BigCatRescue 2 years ago
They won't feed them roadkill because of parasites etc.
These pests exist in nature, must the food be sterilized for the tigers?
sLowd09 2 years ago
Not sterilized, they have tough digestive systems and tend to drag meat we feed them off the food block onto the ground anyway! We just buy in approved, quality meat.
BigCatRescue 2 years ago
No way!...what foods bigcats are allergic to?
Enoughyoufool 2 years ago
it would be cool if you had hunting grounds and let the cats hunt a live donated pet horse...it would keep them fit too if the horse had room to run away
justforwatchingcraps 2 years ago 2
not a horse a cow since there is more meat and stuff

Thanks, that's cool info about the snow leopards bottled water.
euskadi71 2 years ago
Hi, great videos! I hope to get over there one day! Quick question. Researching raw diets I read about cats, (domestic/wildcat) having "low thirst drive" and getting water mainly from moisture content of prey due to desert dwelling. Is this true and is this the same for any of the larger cats? Thanks! Hope to see you and all the big cats soon! 'Specially the snow leopard :)
therunninDog 2 years ago
Hi, thanks, I'd say this is true our big cats don't really drink a great deal, we feed them whole prey as you can see in the video. Hope you make it to the sanctuary some day, did you know we give our two snow leopards Hercules and Cloe bottled water? This is because in the wild they would be drinking pure glacial run off etc...

May I ask a question that is not related.
Who wins Tiger or Lion?
SaeedBaba 2 years ago
I'd say Lion they are used to fighting to protect their pride etc... and they have that big thick mane that protects their neck.

Do you sell babies of this big cats for pets? I really wanna buy one? I live in California, can we have one? Are there any laws for this?
charlieisgone 2 years ago
Private ownerships is banned in 18 states, California is one of them and believe me this is a very good thing for you and the cats! We don't do any breeding, these cats make horrible "pets" they cost a fortune to feed, require a large enclosure, specialist vet care, they don't want to be around you as they get older and if you wanna go on vacation, what do you do with your 500lb lion? We are trying to get all states to ban private ownership, as it's always the cats that suffer.

is it true that tigers and lions will attack you if you feed them? or is that just a myth?
tina1988x 2 years ago
Tigers and lions will probably attack you whenever they have half a chance! Quite a few of ours are food aggressive, but we always feed our tigers and lions when they are separated in the other part of their cage so we have nothing to worry about!!!
