It always bothers me when someone asks a question with a negative in it, such as "Wouldn't you do that?" because either way you answer, it could mean something else...
@TheSpontaneousWonder OMG you'd be surprised! like i didn't think ppl actually said UNTHAW until i heard it for myself from an English Teacher! You'll usually hear those two words used by middle aged adults.
omgosh, the bass part sounds like something the trombones play in band...ferret cage...that's because elementary school sucks...5th grade...ahhhh, find a happy place, find a happy place...no not the giant robo dongs! lol tehe jk
"irregardless" and "I could care less" have always bothered me. If someone uses it in a sentence, it'll actually take me aback and my eyes will glaze over and I'll start to drool. I also lose the thread of whatever they're talking about.
I agree on the 'irregardless' statement. Anyone who uses it needs 5 minutes in the ferret cage.
I also hate the 'i could care less' statement, but i don't agree that 'i couldn't care less' shouldn't be used. It is a hyperbole used to express an extreme apathy towards something.
Yes, I did double check to make sure I used hyperbole correctly.
"Two negatives make a positive, and it works the same way for (the English) langauge too".
Double negatives are/were incorrect in Classical Latin, German & English, but are considered *correct* in Classical Greek, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Hebrew and Japanese.
----------------------------------------
The language of mathematics is very different in the US and Britain.
At the end where he says "you might end up in a ferret cage" you can see a black spot on one of his lower teeth. lol That's why you shouldn't chew tobacco.
"I could care less" is sarcasm, and "you Can't not do it" is emphasizing the action of doing it in a poetic sense while showing someone's opinion on the matter in a more important, dramatic way. Negatives have been used in an artistic sense for a long time.
omg! i thought i was the only one bothered when people say "irregardless." you should do something about the use the phrase "deja vu all over again." how redundant is that!
Thank you for pointing out the illogic of "I could care less" (and others). We are importing this mistake into the UK at present (along with "real [adjective]" rather than "really [adjective]" -really is an adverb; real is not) and it really gets on my nerves.
JACK!!! I took the PSATs the other day and there was a grammar portion where you had to choose which sentence was grammatically correct... one of the choices had "irregardless" in the sentence and my head nearly exploded. Then I thought of you. Hahah.
Ohmy god i did not know that there are people that uses "iregardless" what a bunch of ignorant swines ( i am no american and do not live in a country where english is the native-tounge and still i am amazed with the mistkes that native-speakers commit.... or mine also ... if i misspelled anything in this comment please enter my account and fill my comment seccion with kind "fuck you"s and other swearing please)
The English language is weird because it doesn't contain double negatives. I don't know whether this is true about other languages but I know that it is grammatically correct if not grammatically preferred to use double negatives in Spanish and Russian.
Oh, man. I was waiting to see if you would bring up the "could care less" issue and you DID. I laughed so hard...and then even harder when you talked about your neighbors hearing you at the end. You crack me up.
As an English man I find many Americanisms get to me, but since I've been here(One month)the thing that gets to me most is when your talking to someone and they say "your so funny" but there not laughing. Though you make a very good point about the word "like"....Awful.
I mean, it is, but only because so many people insist on using it. With its prefix and suffix, however, it makes no sense in its stem context. Stupid word, bitter subject! jk
Irregardless, is a word in the sense that you will find it in the dictionary (in mine anyway) and people will, in fact, use it. However, the word is considered to be nonstandard because, as he points out, of its two negatives. In all fairness, it's a fairly new word (early 20th century) and is generally used to add emphasis, though it oftentimes just makes you sound foolish. It's a casual word, not formal as so many believe it to be, and it's considered a blunder by most.
very good video- it drives me mental when people are verbose to try to sound clever with words such as irregardless, presume (when they mean assume), virtually, literally, physically etc.
Believe it or not, I have never used the phrase "I couldn't care less" because of that reason right there. I mean, "I could care less"? Isn't that supposed to be a compliment? Why don't people THINK??
My automatic back-handed slap reflex would go into overdrive whenever I heard "irregardless." But - and this is no lie - I finally did the legwork and looked it up just two months ago: m-w. com/dictionary/irregardless
hey ur videos are awseome and dont get me wrong but try some grading tecniques it might take out some of the green on your body and face so it doesnt look like ur standing in front of a green screen. im not saying i dont like your video cause i do like them there awesome just giving some advice. (and u do know u didnt put a background right at the end of the video where you can see ur in front of a green screen right?) :D
The logic of two negatives make a positive is true in English, but not in all langauges. In (gramatically correct) Spanish, for example, double negatives are used all the time. eg No hay nada (there is nothing, but literally there is not nothing)
The English language is depreciating by the generation, instead of improving. I've noticed that almost all the people that I know my age, use double negatives in nearly every sentence, so I get really confused when they try to have a conversation with me.
"You can't not do it" is a bad example. It's not a simple double negative but an example of litotes, using negation for its emphasising effect (cf. emphatic "Thou shalt not kill" with unassertive "Thou shalt allow all to live a natural lifespan").
"Irregardless", however is another matter. A salesman used it with me a few days ago and, if it weren't for the great sale price, I'd have walked out of the store in protest.
i ain't never heard no one say irregardless. so what you souldn't have not done, is to do nothing with that one word, for.. hold on, i confused myself here.
by golly he couldn't have not never thought about not doing a better video irregardless of him being in a ferret cage -1 x -1 = positive 2 ya'll. that video was AWSOME...lol but seriously nice video, i'm a big fan dan
As for the "I could/couldn't care less" debate: I think it'd be better to just drop the annoying word from the mind-boggling phrase. "I care less" or "I don't care" gets the point across better.
haha you know what pisses me off the most? When people add "il-" to stuff. Like my partner for an Wnglish project kept saying "ILlogical fallacies" instead of "logical fallacies." I TOLD HER A MILLION TIMES TO SAY LOGICAL!
In fact, the video is on my page. I'll post a video response so you can see just how horribly aggravating it is.
BTW my script was immaculate but one guy was high, another was extremely nervous, and the girl was a HUGE bitch who wouldn't listen to my direction or say the lines I had written. AND it was DIFFICULT to edit.
Jack! haha brilliant! It does piss me off when I haer " I could care less". Jack are you studying or have studied an English major? You really come on with things I couldnt think right away. You must really have tho8ughts of people's grammar while at the same time having a normal conversation. Keep it up! I too cant not tolerate excessive negatives irregardless. :)
YES! Someone finally realized it! "I couldn't care less" is a phrase I say fairly often. The first time I said it to my friends they looked at me weird and said "Hey, wouldn't you mean "I could care less?". I just responded to their asinine comment showing them that I was indeed correct, and they were just fooled by pop culture. ~Josh
This is a great episode! I loved the flashback to school-poor little Jack! And I often get a puzzled look on my face mentally trying to work my way through the various negatives littered in speech, doing the negative math thing as I listen, usually resulting in me realising that someone has ended up saying the opposite of what they meant to say. Great point with the couldn't care less thing! Does anyone REALLY say 'irregardless'!?
so true! I, as a German, already go confused with all that coubled negatives and thought they'd make the negative more negative, which was a surprise to me, cause we don't use it that way in Germany! I've never even heard anyone use the word "irregardless" around me. I guess the education system in the state of New Jersey isn't lacking as opposed to other places I won't talk about here.
After reading the most recent comments, I think you should do a video on "irregardless," or at least insert it into one of your vids. Btw, I love your stuff; I think you're my favorite subscription.
how stupid did you feel when you were si nging this song? but really, this is a great video. i can really relate to the "I couldn't care less." expression. it drove me crazy when my friends and even parents say it. i FINALLY find someone to relate to.
ya, that whole "i could care less" thing always seemed very annoying and stupid to me. Like you said on another dictionary, that's what happens to phrases and words in america

I've never even heard anyone use the word "irregardless" around me. I guess the education system in the state of New Jersey isn't lacking as opposed to other places I won't talk about here.

somehow I knew someday you would find one of these things so annoying (irregardless being the winner) that you'd angrily demand for us not to use it.
blackstar1973 4 years ago
After reading the most recent comments, I think you should do a video on "irregardless," or at least insert it into one of your vids. Btw, I love your stuff; I think you're my favorite subscription.

how stupid did you feel when you were si nging this song? but really, this is a great video. i can really relate to the "I couldn't care less." expression. it drove me crazy when my friends and even parents say it. i FINALLY find someone to relate to.

ya, that whole "i could care less" thing always seemed very annoying and stupid to me. Like you said on another dictionary, that's what happens to phrases and words in america

I wish I COULD put people in a ferret cage for using language incorrectly.
Then again, that would require a lot of cages.
