  • Well La Lupone was even impressed!

  • Well now we know what happened to Mother Gothel's husband....

  • The one person who unliked this is the guy she wants to leave...

  • spawn of Julie Andrews! Amazing ladies!

  • lol at 3:02 if you have captions on transcribing the audio it says "series online hot tin roof and that"

  • Lol. This woman is FIERCE!

  • This is great but Jan Maxwell live was better.

  • Her acting reminded me of Meryl Streep's. We KNOW it's all planned: she knows how and when to smile, blink, walk, move her hands, but it all seems natural, not mechanic. LOVE IT!

  • Patti's face from 2:50-2:57 is like, "Is this bitch insane?". *Dead*

  • You wouldn't happen to have any of Audra Mcdonald's performances from this show would you?

  • did anyone else notice the woman behinds her's face....she's just jelous of Donna Murphy's amazing voice :)

  • @IB2luvable Woman behind her? You mean Patti Lupone? I think another commenter said it best :"Patti's face is like "Is this bitch insane?""

  • @IB2luvable wow... seriously, "the woman behind her"? REALLY?!?!!?

  • @WWEQAF i realized who it was right after i made this comment, Patti Lupone.

  • Love this! Also LOVED Elaine Strictches number here but can not find it on YouTube ..... If anyone knows where I can find it, please message me! Thanks

  • In my opinion the best rendition is Julie Andrew's and later this one. Just marvelous!

  • Please. This is WITHOUT A DOUBT the best performance of this song. Maxwell rushes the whole thing, and the moments are not finished. Murphy is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT here. BRAVO!

  • There is a differnce between Maxwell and Murphy. Murphy's version is stunning and well acted. Maxwell's version is also stunning and well acting what is noticed though is there are a different set of emotions played at varying degrees. Maxwell highlights frustration, loathing, a woman at the end of her rope and fed up and hurt. Murphy's version highlights a woman frustrated sad, angry (more so than Maxwell's) and is way more sardonic. I love both version but on stage it's close to which i'd want

  • @CVActor1 This isn't unlike ladies who lunch. While Patti LuPone did an absolutely amazing rendition of this song with such a powerful voice such as hers Barbara Walsh is the one to see on stage. Patti LuPone as someone said serves up the song as a mug of beer. Walsh though you can see it is less comedic and more serious and giving what happened just before that scene Barbara Walsh's rendition is a much better fit.

  • Too many comparisons between Maxwell and Murphy, when they play too separate Phyllis interpretations. Murphy plays this song as though throwing faults in Ben's face and making a point and in that gaining a victory. Maxwell is on rage mode as her version is as the camel's backs are breaking. Honestly I just can't choose between them.

  • Oh my gosh Patti luPones face! But Donna Murphy is a true talent.

  • wow....

  • Donna Murphy would be such a good witch in Into The Woods.

  • @sabrinaandfarrenn Especially after she work in Tangled...

  • The first time I saw her was on Star Trek Insurrection and Spider Man. This was the last thing I would see her in. Simply amazing!

  • it's not the best tho it is good

i dont think that she really understands the context of the song

    the best is jan maxwell

  • @theman8398 I'm sorry, but that comes across as totally ignorant. Jan Maxwell's performance is wonderful, and she makes for a terrific Phyllis. But to say that DONNA MURPHY does't understand a Sondheim song? Horrid. She holds the golden trophy for this song.

  • What event was this?

  • @dia55555 Sondheim's 80th birthday. the full show is on netflix instant

  • She makes me think of how Audrey Hepburn would have done this song...

  • oh my...fell in love with this version...ive been listening to this since yesterday...i bet my husband feel bit intimidated, heheheh

  • Mother Gothel?

  • i don't usually enjoy Donna Murphy at all but this is a fabulous rendition and performance of this song. Brava!

  • Donna Murphy has done the impossible. She has out-sung Audra, Marin, AND Patti. Congratulations!

  • Patti's face behind Donna at 2:50 is just... brilliant

  • @lmdday patti was totally sucked into the performance :P

  • she's brilliant:)

  • Hard to believe this is the same woman who created the role of Fosca. I don't usually like this song, but I love her performance. Every detail is perfectly refined, yet it feels spontaneous. The end is stunning.

  • I saw this last year when it aired on TV and was impressed. Last night I saw Jan Maxwell do it live in Follies and I have to say she really can call this song her own for ever more! If you can get to NY before Jan. 2012 don't miss her performance. Everyone is great but she's sublime.

  • I've watched this performance a dozen times already and every time I do it, I feel mesmerized by it! I'm not familiar with other singers' performances, but I'm convinced that no other singer's rendition to this song could ever be compared to the intensity and emotion of Donna's singing. And it's not just the singing, which is perfect, but the act itself is amazing. Although it's a concert performance, she delivers, flawlessly, all the character's emotions. Brava!!!

  • She's AMAZING!<3~

  • She's phenomenal.

  • This also proves what an amazing actress she is. It's hard to believe that this is the same woman who starred in "Murder One" on television back in the 90s, as Stanley Tucci's put-upon wife.

  • @jnetusil ~ There is a huge difference between "feeble" and "singing quietly".

  • Wow. A big thanks to my theatre teacher for showing this to my class. She is amazing!! :D I have been watching this so much recently.

  • and that's why she was chosen to play the part of Mother Gothel in Tangled :)

  • When I saw that she didn't rise from her chair like the others before her, I thought... oh, boy. Great. Another vocalist who is going to subtly brag about her talent of singing while sitting. Then, I was silenced. I can never speak a bad word about Donna. Ever. I am now viciously searching through iTunes for anything labeled "Donna Murphy".

  • STUNNING... DONNA is the BEST... effortless brilliance.

  • she reminds me of bernadette peters in this performance!

  • Wow! What a performance. Picard should have kept her!

  • This just reminds me... that i LOVED her in Tangled :)

  • 'thud' (that was my jaw hitting the floor)

  • Theres a reason this has no dislikes!

  • I can't even imagine how awesome it would be having those six ladies sing at my birthday!

And I really like Donna singing this! She definitely owned it!

  • First off, the only word for this is FIERCE.

Second, Donna Murphy is God's gift to musical theater. *nods*

  • Ladies & Gents, this is what you call OWNING the song. Ms. Donna came to SERVE and everyone gagged. LOVE it!

  • I'm new to this song and I can truly come in with an unbiased view of it. I've been watching and listening to dozens of performances. Donna Murphy's is really the best one. It's both well sung and -- albeit performed in concert -- the best acted.

  • Amazing and brilliant!

  • I love the women behind her who stare in disbelief XD

  • Sometimes I just enjoy hitting the 3:28 mark. Over and over. And over.

  • Oh my gosh...I love this. I have the DVD and watch it all the time :)

  • what is this from? is this available with all these amazing women? i HAVE TO HAVE IT!!!

  • Murphy is astounding. Like Angela, we get a great actress and a great singer.

  • Best EVER! Carol Burnett did great, but this has her beat hands down.

  • Me to. I own the original cast recording and in all honesty this and Carol Burnets version are both a lot better!

  • I gotta say, I'm fucking tired of old people comparing any number from FOLLIES to the original production,.

  • @Splurge24 Amen!!!!

  • @Splurge24 AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well, it is a fine performance but I must prefer Alexis Smith who had the both the stature, elegance and power which makes it make sense in the show. I was fortunate to have seen the original tour twice (that's the one in 1973). Unfortunately the youtubes of Alexis Smith singing on a tv show do not capture the power and clarity of her performance in the live show. And Yvonne de Carlo was also amazing (as frankly was everyone else in the show).

  • One word : AWESOME!!

  • This woman is fantastic. After this Mr. Sondheim must have thought he took Viagra.. Murphy has it all. She sings with guts and charm. A rare combination few possess. It can't be taught. "You Either Have It Or You Don't" Brava!!!

  • I love how supportive Elaine Stritch is of the other women!

  • Look at Patti's face at 2:52, LOL

  • never heard her sing before; several acting performances but no songs! she's sublime!

  • @diddymuck Please do yourself a favor and check her out in "Passion." She's phenominal in that, especially in "I Wish I Could Forget You."

  • EPIC. She is just AMAZING.

  • A.m.a.z.i.n.g! I get ear-gasm when she sings 'confess' !

  • Ridiculous. Donna Murphy is a national treasure. Look at Patti's face when she says "wait a goddamn minute!"

  • BRILLIANT!

  • i love Donna Murphy she is my favorite actress ever. She is the best.

  • I love Donna Murphy! Whenever I watch this video I start to sing along to it! My favorite Broadway song sung by my favorite singer makes my day!

  • PLEASE POST THE OTHERS! :)

  • when was this?

  • Wow,,I don't think Steven Sondheim had this in mind when he wrote this or how wonderful and brilliantly it could be presented ! Is here anything that this talented performer can't do? She made a Disney villian memorabale for all time! Rocked a sitcom with her version of "Hit Me With A Hot Note" the likes of witch I think even Duke Ellingtion would have given a standing ovation! Anna In The King And I,and she floored me when I saw her on Broadway in Passion!

  • @jnetusil I didnt say she had never been in a broadway show... the woman has 4 tonys. I said she had never been in a SONDHEIM show on broadway. Clearly the antecedent of one show is Sondheim... I was merely pointing out that I think its strange that with all the various revivals of Sondheim that have happened Audra has NEVER been in one. Just because you people can understand syntax doesnt make my statement incorrect...

  • I love how she uses the whole stage, instead of standing in front of the microphone. She's a true performer.

  • @jnetusil LLlUUuVvVZZZzZz!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think its odd that 4 of these women have originated roles in Sondheim musicals, three of them have been in multiple shows, and Audra hasnt even been in ONE show OBC or otherwise...

  • @Evilqueen1985 Audra hasn't been in any Broadway productions, but she has played several parts in Sondheim shows, including Dot from Sunday in the Park with George, the Beggar Woman from Sweeney Todd, Fay Apple in Anyone Can Whistle, and, most notably, Clara in Passion.

  • @90lysander um. wrong... Ragtime? Master Class? Carousel? Three Tony's... count 'em.

  • @PattiwhackPics I meant any Broadway productions of Sondheim musicals (as opposed to regional productions). Gosh, of course I know that she's been on Broadway! And she's actually won four Tonys ... Raisin in the Sun was #4.

  • @Evilqueen1985 do your research, you sound like a tool.

  • @PattiwhackPics Audra has not, in fact, been in an OBC or Revival of a Sondheim show. That is what I was referring to. Im sorry if you incorrectly inferred otherwise, but thank you for your concern as to my apparent toolage...

  • @Evilqueen1985 You are 100% WRONG. Audra performed in a concert version of Passion as Clara at Carnegie, which is available right here on youtube. It is called a keyboard and the english language. Make use of it before making other ignorant comments.

  • I don't know why Elaine didn't clap, but it's certainly not because she didn't like Murphy's performance or Murphy herself. You can see it yourself at the end of Stritch's performance that night. Just type: Elaine Stritch " I'm Still Here " in the search bar.

  • At like :53 Elaine is laughing (it's clearer on the actual DVD) so I'm pretty sure she liked it. I'm also pretty sure she's smiling at the end.

  • @lttlpeppy Can you tell me where I can buy the DVD? It would be great to have these wonderful perfoemances to watch again and again in better quality :-)

  • @googygok I got mine online at Best Buy, but you can get it at Amazon too.

  • Free of flaws.

  • It's so funny you all think Elaine didn't like it, or that she was being disrespectful, haha.

  • After Elaine stops clapping you can see she's applauding with her feet. I think she performed right after this so she probably cut her clapping short to get in the zone. I agree with the rest - what a great performance!

  • @awruth the next performer was Bernadette.

  • @kylejerel doh! there goes my theory.

  • Elaine does clap right when the song ends, if you look quickly, a few quick claps, and then when they zoom back to Donna with Elaine in the background she's already stopped clapping.

  • Screw Elaine.. that was fabulous!

  • Yeah, Music3251 I see she isn't clapping too!! I wonder why that is? I think that its in very bad taste to not applaud a fellow actor -- especially after such a fabulous performance! Hmm ... go figure!

  • Elaine wasn't clapping haha

  • She's such a fantastic actress.

  • Love the slow burn.

  • Little Priest and this song was my absolute favorite of the concert. Donna Murphy is amazing!!

  • Brilliant!

  • Next to "A Little Priest" it was the best performance of the night if you ask me :)

  • Oh God this is wonderful. Thank you! Is there more? Please!

  • Perfect performance.

  • awesome sauce.
