Hello, Im trying to learn jazz chords, and i am an absolute beginner in jazz music. I just began recently, what kind of excercises would you recommend to get used to some jazz chords? These videos are awesome! Ive tried to implement some jazz chords into a song the other day, Cm(major 7) etc. but I keep going back to just basic chords naturally. I want to play more chords with a different tune, not just the same ones over and over again.
Been playing guitar for a year and a half I'm pretty decent at blues and jazz now just got a piano hopefully I'll be able to give this video a shot in a few weeks
What would be a big help is if you write down the chord progressions in the notes. ex:
LH Em7 (1,5) RH GM7
LH CM7 (1,5) RH F#M7
et.
This would be very valuable. I am trying to teach myself accompaniment and your work is helping. Do you have actual Accompaniment videos of popular songs like Seal's "Rose" or George Michael's "Father Figure" or Elton John?
How do you do that run when you go across the piano? Ive tried to figure it out but i cant get it. You got a lot of talent keep it up Ive grown up listen to good jazz music.
I'm sorry for being so direct, but for me and anyone else watching who has perfect pitch, this video is useless. Why did you have to have to use a mechanical transposition on your keyboard?
It's really too bad, because I would have loved watching and maybe learning something.
I do apologise for it before the video so it's not like I did it on purpose. At least you can see some of the voicings visually. You'll also note this was made 3 years ago. My more recent uploads may satisfy you more.
@MusicGuru12 Don't worry, Brotha! Nobody has "perfect" pitch. It does not exist. The fellow hassling you may have perfect "RELATIVE" pitch but I gotta call crap on the "perfect pitch." I find it hard to believe that anyone could be born with the ability to perfectly recognize something that changes with time. When someone says they have perfect pitch I want to ask, "Were you born with a more modern 440hz perfect-pitch or a more traditional 435hz ?" :)
@TheSalesmenBand Actually, it's possible to identify even the frequency for those who have perfect pitch. And perfect (or absolute pitch) pitch means that one is able to tell without any reference at all! But I agree that the other comment made by skybart was extremely uncalled for!
You are wrong - perfect pitch does exist. I know a guy who has it, and I have tested him on it, comparing Baroque tunings and modern tunings and asking what note this is and whatnot, and beyond a shadow of a doubt, he has it. *I* have relative pitch. *Most* musicians have relative pitch. Perfect pitch is *rare* but it exists.
@TheSalesmenBand I beg to differ. I have perfect pitch. Now your point about 440 or 435Hz. For me, I can tell you when a single not is out of tune, and by how much (not in Hz, just aurally lol). So to me, I hear a difference when its 440 or 435. Nether is wrong if it is Intended to sound as it does. some pianos are tuned different anyway ie. a Db sounds like C.
However, Skybart Is talking shit. I can both hear the notes at "Natural" pitch and imagine what it would sound like with no sound.
@MusicGuru12 ha dont worry about it bro. your doing great. and it really doesnt matter if it was shifted down. it still sounds the same, exept the pitch. but yeah its watever man.
@skybart Hahaha what an asshole you are. We're so sorry you have fuckin perfect pitch and therefore can't work around an off-key transcription. If you have perfect pitch, why can't you just figure it out by listening? And way to just rip someone to shreds for trying to contribute some jazz education to the world. You suck.
@skybart Hey with all respect I strongly disagree with what u said. Doesn't matter if you have perfect pitch or not, he is showing you the chords and the voicings, later on you could take them back to the original key..it's as simple as that.
@skybart Keep in mind I only have relative pitch, but I would imagine that even though you have perfect pitch, you could still derive some use for this video. It could not possibly be that hard to transpose what you are hearing to match what you are seeing. If you can't do that, just stop looking at the stinking video and listen. Jeez.
@skybart What the fuck? You have perfect pitch but you can't transpose? If you had perfect pitch, why would you even be searching youtube videos to "learn something?" You have no idea what perfect pitch even means. Fucking idiot.
you need some better voicings man. those are more contemporary, imo. try some chordal chords, rootless chords, and scale chords. Also, work on substitutions and changing tonal centers. Many jazz pieces change tonal centers at least once in a piece. technically it's an a minor pentatonic. Parallel fifths are something you're going to want to typically avoid, and they're all over the place. they have a very, very strong flavor to them, which is often quite too much for jazz. not too bad otherwise.
hi man,,,,i would like to add more chords to this circle,,,Dm, Gm,D,F,Bb,A,,,,,,i wanna kno what more chords i can add,,,pls if u can help me ,,,,man ,,,,tnx,,,,,

I added some video annotations explaining the chords I wasn't sure about.
the chord you were not sure of is Am9 can also be played with a walking bass line A, B, C, Db, D, F#, G, Ab, A with your righthand dropping the G in the Am9 chord to the F# :) (D bass)

Hey guys! There really is no way to write that without you throwing in an extra note accidentally, so I wrote out the R.H. notes Left to Right. Good luck!

First of all you're doing a great job teaching like this over the internet! I just wanted to add that the first chord in the 2nd section is a Am9, followed by GMaj add9 and finally FMaj. Great job and very kind of you to share these techniques!
you tutorial is very gud! thank you so much! im currently trying to start learning jazz,so im juz looking out for useful tutorials and i found yours, very good!
Its a decent riff, although your timing and finger precision is a bit off.
Still very moody and nice :)

Really good! Amazing how a few simple chords can sound so good. That chord was pretty much an Am7(9) at 2:54, or CM7(6) whatever :)
keep it up!!

Hey guys! Just wanted to post the chords in text, so you wouldn't have to figure them out: Here they are: F7/D(omit3)---em7/C(omit3)---C4.2/A(omit3)---F#ABD/G(omit3)---am7/F(omit3)...Sorry about the next to last chord. There really is no way to write that without you throwing in an extra note accidentally, so I wrote out the R.H. notes Left to Right. Good luck!

Nice chords MG!
I would call the change part:
a minor 9, G Major 9, F Major 7. (am9, GM9, FM7)
Great sound in Yamaha!

First of all you're doing a great job teaching like this over the internet! I just wanted to add that the first chord in the 2nd section is a Am9, followed by GMaj add9 and finally FMaj. Great job and very kind of you to share these techniques!
