As much as I love Immortal, I do not believe in an image of sort. I would assume most of these bands would be inspired by the darkness of Norway, which can lead to some symbols. Immortal is not that way in this interview, but I wouldn't believe people such as Nattefrost or Infernus are that way.

All in all, I agree some of them seem to blow smoke up their fan's asses, but not all of them.

Those of you who complain that they come across as too commercial in this clip should keep in mind that if the Scandinavian black metal bands had SOLELY been non-commercial enterprises, made for the 'true cult' members of a small group of people, NONE of them would have sung (growled) in English, but in their native language. When I see Kolgrim in the old interviews I always get a kind of giggle starting. He was raised in a Christian family and understood what it meant and even embraced the ethics, and then he had to defend himself against the idiots that claimed to be them - even though they judged the band before they even understood what they were doing. The opposite of Christianity.

Generally in interviews in Norway and Sweden at the time, he's the quiet one because - as he's put it - "I was about to explode".

I don't think they lack conviction, they just don't share the satanistic conviction of those bands that were making headlines in early '90s. They say in the interview, that they like nature, winter and mountains (for example), and the lyrics reflect that. The characters they assume onstage are the "winterdemons" (representations of nature and winter) found in the lyrics.

They're just trying to distance themselves from the satanic church-burners, because they *never were* satanists or whatever

The translation seemed a little questionable to me. But the black metal scene was about not being like the death metal scene in that the music and the imagery was far more profound. In the case of Immortal, they were just doing what they enjoyed which includes all of the symbols, the fantasy lyrics, the corpse paint and so forth. It was not to my knowledge as serious as the other bands true, but that doesn't mean the music is any less serious.
