  • Cutlerylover of today would of turned this into a 15 minute review.

  • Got a '01 Soldier (and it was new!) on Valentine's day from my girlfriend...love it (and her)! Sturdy, compact and elegant

  • Damn i lost this knife recently at a trip. I've had it since 2002 and never failed me. :(

  • How is the blade "lockup"? My Pioneer is kinda squishy there. I love my alox Solo and my red Bantam- how about a Bantam L or XL!!!

  • Love your videos but why is the camera moving so much?

  • Love this knife! Carried it everyday since I've gotten it and thinking about getting one for my little sister fro her first knife, maybe get another for me too ;)

  • thanks cutlerylover!

  • a lickable blade is of course a lockable blade!

  • @5:20 Intended use: shotgunning beer.

  • bought the 2010 version

  • has this been renamed the cadet or are they 2 different knives altogether ?

  • Very nice EDC that is also acceptable around non-knife-people.

I have knives that are much more high-end, yet I often come back to this one.

  • The awl will drill a perfectly round hole through wood (for attachment or cordage) if you twist the knife while pushing against the wood, like a cordless drill. a great way to make tent stakes or snare triggers/parts. I also use it as a firesteel edge, and a beater edge/utility edge.

  • i got a Victorinox Soldier today in great condition and it says 85 on the back of the blade does that mean that is the year it was made?

  • "...a wire stripper. You use it for stripping wires."

    Thank you and goodnight.

  • also mine says 99 instead of 08

  • i have this knife in red and i got it for free

  • the odd blade is an emergency one, meant not to cut a wounded person while cutting a belt, boot or clothing. It is a ''first aid'' tool!

    Cheers!

  • what are swiss knifes for? why do people like them so muuch and whats thier use?

  • @MrPiedish

they make great EDC, been complyant to most local laws in america and canada(and its almost 100% sheeple friendly, but some are just totally retarded still), I wouldn't agree with any douche who'd claim it as a weapon

  • @MrPiedish

Legal in the UK as well which has v strict laws about what can be carried where (ie NO lickable blades or fixed blades may be carried in public, NO automatic or assisted knives may be carried in public, NO blade longer than 3 inches (7.5 cm) may be carried in public.)

The standard SAK covers all these bases.

  • These SAK got a bit different blade size than other, Soldier got thicker and bigger overall blade.

  • if you notice on this knife the base is thicker that regular knives of its lenght, also its the only swiss army knife that is numbered by year. and the pins are different, but im positive you know that.

  • is the pioneer same quality?

  • @mancunionproductions yeah it is the civilian soldier only difference is the shield and key ring

  • If you're getting this, get the pioneer model instead! It's the same deal, with a key ring, diffrent sheild and a little space without texture for engraving.

  • i have a Super Tinker and the top scale got loose but thats just cause i carry it aroun alot and drop it all the time.i need to get sheath (if thats what you call it for a folding knife) can you buy new scales from victorinox i looked on the site and could not find it im just going to call

  • I'm going to buy the new Soldier swiss army knife as soon as possible. I'll tell you what it's worth

  • OMG!!! in the beginning of 2010...vitorinox has decided to make the final production of this specific knife design/model....i dont know exactly.....but they made like 5000 of this model this year and the last ones......

srry...i cant seem to post the website here....i will post it in my profile in a comment...

  • Just to save some people some lookin.... The Wiki for SAK states 15 Cr, 0.60 Si, 0.52 C, 0.50 Mo,0.45 Mn, and 56HRC. This falls in line with the "a composition between 420 and 440A" reported from Victorinox.

None of that matters much though, because we all know that the type of steel doesn't mean anything compared to the heat treat and the grind. While I don't think anybody does cheap stainless like Buck, an SAK is ground so it works even when its dull. SAK's rock!

  • Great as usual, glad to see the knives come back a little into the reviews - not that your other vids aren't great, but its nice to see some blades!

  • i wish some victorinox knives had pocket clips so could carry them. i just dont like having a loose knife in my pocket.

  • does this come with a key ring

  • ive got this knife

  • Another nice video, Jeff. Thank you!

Lighting was OK but better dimension comes with better lighting. I do not think this natural light method hindered the review at all. You sure sold me on a new Victorinox Soldier.

  • lol cutlerylover alwayz has his what he needs like a ruler and jewleryz loop

  • Nice field knife, love all the Alox knives that vic make. i have the farmer and its an outstanding piece of kit. Thanks for all your work c, lover.

  • you should've out an an annotation for the secretary model video

  • sicne its an issued knife, I woudl guess, and its just a guess, that that was the original design...

  • @ SpyderNoirJHA: The alox Soldier is actually still called the Soldier, in spite of the fact that there is now another, 111 mm model carrying the same name. Vic naming is a bit confusing though...

The one in the video is commonly referred to as the "alox Soldier", the "old style Soldier", or by year, for instance "'08 Soldier".

  • @ metalman2136 and cubetube232: I can't help but wonder if your bad experiences with Swiss Army Knives might not stem from having been the victim of knock offs. Regardless, one of the great things about Victorinox is the fact that their products come with a lifetime warranty, that is even interpreted liberally af the HQ, which means that even damage to knives due to abuse that might result in a void of warranty has been known to have been fixed free of charge.

  • @ Cutlerylover: Great work, I enjoy the stuff you put out! Small point though, the Soldier actually only comes in silver alox. The coloured ones are called Pioneers (and have the key ring).

@ astaschak: Speaking of coloured alox, if you like the look of the Soldier, you really should check out the coloured Pioneers as well, especially the red one - a thing of beauty! And don't even get me started on the coloured Cadets...

  • Do you know why the symbol on the handle looks different than other Victorinox knives?

  • Because it is the Switzerland shield the other ones are a victorinox shield

  • that onw as sharp!

  • wat was the site again???

    smoke*wat*...smokeamount or....

  • eknifeworks...smokey mountain knife works..

  • @cutlerylover: thanks man!!! though i dont buy or own any knives....i just like looking at them!!!

i will start buying knives, that is, when i earn my own money...

  • CΩΩL STUҒҒ

  • Great advantage of Victorinox is that these knives are generaly accepted as being a simple innocent non-dangerous camping knife by most people.. A time ago I bought a Victorinox 'Kid camper' with roundtip blade for my 7yr old nephew, my sister would never have agreed to giving it to him if it wasn't a Vic

  • the Soldier only comes in Silver ALOX

  • dude swiss knifes break on me all thee time how do i get them to stop breaking

  • Don't use them so roughly? Or maybe they are too cheap.

  • @metalman2136 don't pry with them and don't abuse them

  • i got one on the plastic handle ones from 2007. mine has a knife, saw, finger/toe cleaner, nail file, serrated scissors a bottle opener, a flat head screw driver, a wire cutter a Philips head screwdriver, the reamer thing, tooth pick and pliers =) o and mine also has grips =)

  • Thanks, Jeff. All those SAKs are so cute! Can't get enough of them, even though I don't use them that much. Just like to have them around.

Do you happen to have a Farmer around? It's basically the Soldier with a saw-blade added. Still pretty slim. The awl/punch is AWESOME on those particular SAKs.

  • I like swiss army knives, but the thing that I just don't get is their can opener.

  • i want to get a Victorinox now, the ALOX handle is just beautiful, i didn't know that they made ones with aluminum handles.

  • Realy cool little knife, now I'm considering getting one :D

  • Been carrying a Victorinox Cadet now for years. Great knives. Soldier is a great model as well.

  • Nice review. I must say, though I am an unabashed Spyderco fanatic, I think the Vic Soldier (or rather, the knife formerly known as the Soldier) is the prettiest knife I've ever seen. I have three myself.

  • Hi Jeff,

there is one other important difference between the Alox models and the normal ones:

The blades of the Alox-models are quite a big thicker and therefore a little tougher!!!!

So the reason why some people prefer them is not only because of the improved sturdiness of the handles but also because of the stronger blades.

Have a good day as will I by keep enjoying your videos ;)

  • depends what your buying, any spyderco, or benmchmade they ever sold was WAY overpriced...but for cheaper stuff they often have a great price...

  • cool

  • I went to switzerland during the summer of my freshman year in high school, and picked this knife up while I was there. It was a little expensive, but it was defiently worth the money. If nothing else but for the story. This is the knife that usuallly rides backup for me. I know that its always gonna be there, and be a work horse as well.

  • if youre worried about the shadows, just use a second light source to illuminate the shadows

  • Hey Jeff,

    Very nice knife. Great review!

    5 STARS

  • yea, its hard for an emo kid to use a victorinox xD

  • heck you truly are shortsighted people. just because i dont like victorinox i need to be thumbed down? im not an emo kid. im a knife dealer for about 15 years now and i just think that if someone has a choice he or she would be better of with a combo of a multitool and a good knife. why would someone settle for a shitty combination of 2 great items.... just because its less bulk and not as heavy? . i rather have a great spyderco and a leatherman . and the design of a victorinox is shit

  • i didnt give you thumps down, i just think it was a funny comments, yea we all like spyderco, leatherman, SOG and bla bla bla, but this victorinox is a great user and beater

  • ok then, I just met thr 1st person who really does hate them, lol

  • @cutlerylover haha yeah just wanted to let you know that there really are people who dislike them or even hate them like i do. to me they are nothing more than little tinker items. i have a bad past with them and will never ever own a victorinox again in my life i rather use or defend myself with a spork hahaha(thats just a joke ofcourse but the rest i really mean)

  • hey everyone is entitled toi their own opinion, I repsetfully disagree but appreciate the honest comment...

  • @cutlerylover Not so good you have 100.000 better knifes than this pickle i wached your other vids.

  • these knives are classic, myeah I have much better performing blades, but some of them scare peoplel, others are just too expesnive to lose on accident, and some are just plain bulky...evetry knife has its place, even cheapos...

  • @virusspoon with out this knife there wouldnt be any of your tactical knives this knife put folding knives-multitools on the map

  • a design classic...

  • This is one of my favorite knives...

  • Ive carried a SAK everyday since I was twelve years old, great reliable products.I'll never be without one.

  • the only bad thing about a victorinox is the fact that i can never get it as sharp as the stock blade

  • i can, i use to not be able to do so but with practice i learmt how. i use a dc4 sharpening stone

  • Have you tried a Spyderco Sharpmaker? It works well on my Vic Soldier.

  • What is that logo? I have this same knife but its made by wenger and it has that same red logo. Why isnt there the Victorinox logo?

  • @SCAREDBANANA

The logo is the oficial Swiss Flag Logo, you find them on all the Embassy around the world, Victorinox bought Wenger 5 years ago, but before they was supplying the army with this knife, the model and steel was based on the same specifications for this reason you can find knives stamped with Victorinox or Wenger... The new SAK is the one with one hand opening system and was introduced in 2009 by the troop.

  • ok, thanks

  • I got mine for £17.

  • lighting was fine no worrys here

ive had the handle scales fall off they were plastic

    ☆☆☆☆☆

  • My favorite knife ever.

    EVER!

  • The great thing about the alox soldier (and the farmer) is the actual size of the blades and tools - they're all thicker and stronger than the red models.

  • Start of the video the lighting is fine so far it doesnt cause any troubles, i can see everything fairly well. Dont worry about night time vids.

  • I've had that same exact model for years. I carry it with me most days. It has been very durable, the only thing is that you seem some wear on the silver metal scales after a while. other than that its still just as good as new.

  • Victorinox makes awesome knives. I have had a swiss army knife for about 10 years, still going strong. :)

  • The dutch army uses them

  • good review me personally i like the farmer alox the best.

  • Dig it! I have one of the last production run Soldiers. I really like the Alox handle alot!

  • When I was younger I had a problem with the plastic handle scales on a Swiss Army style knife. I can't be sure if it was a real Victorinox, since it was a promotional item. It got into the washing machine and the plastic bent from the heat. Therefore - even though I guess I'm a lot more careful nowadays - I did go with ALOX when I bought a SAK recently.

  • A very nice review. :)

    Thanks

  • i've had this knife for a few years and it was left to me by my dad and i always carry it on my key chain :)

  • When you say that it is "military issue" do you mean as a combat knife or just a non-combat tool? I would think that this would hardly serve as any sort of combat knife, so I assume that this is issued along-side something else?

Great review and it looks like a nice knife. I've always been a fan of single, locking blades myself (never thought that Swiss-army knives would do if i ever found myself in need of a sturdy knife) but as far as they go this looks much better than the old plastic ones.

  • yes as a utiltiy blade...

  • ★★★★★

  • hey Jeff...spot on about Victorinox being great knives. I got (2) silver alox Soldiers. My 1997 model has been on my key ring for the past year now.

Bought a new one (2007) because I wanted to have a spare [rule of two]...I was surprised/disappointed that it didn't have a key ring attachment.

The silver alox scales are durable too. Doesn't scratch up or at least mine isn't showing a wear or tear. 5/5 JT

  • thanks JT, yeah great knives, I was never really a fan of the alox scales, I was the "traditionalist" and liked the red scales, but now I prefer these...

  • this is a short vid for you jeff

    haha

  • hey Cutlerylover i wana know is if you can do a review on any sog knives that you have. I am thinking on geting one and cant deside on one. so if you could just get back to me that would be great. Thnks!

  • I have the farmer and i love it, its the same exact thing exept has a saw on it as well. I think the extra size and wight is worth it for a good victorinox saw

  • From what I can tell from online the steel is equivalent to 12C27 stainless

  • I have a very small frame so i usually need to punch a hole in belts & that tool would be sweet! lol... better than the steak knife that i usually use anyway

  • I have the same knife and it's well worth the money. Good workmanship and I belive it will outlast most of us. Right now, I see that Amazon has it for $20 shipped, that's a great deal cuz I remember paying around $28 from a local retail store. Great review 5/5

  • in german only the ones with ALOX scales are called "Swiss Army" knifes the red ones are call "Original Swiss" knifes

  • thats a beautiful knife..... maaaan how many knives do you have in total? O_O

  • Hey man. Just to let you know. If you can get another light source to put on the other side, it makes a big difference. Great vid man.

  • i use my punture part to shotgun beer~!

  • 5/5

  • i got the Cadet for christmas which is this same knife exept has a key ring, nail file, and different victorinox logo. Mine also has an engraving panel :)

I dont know if you care much but if you want to know for future reference, the material that the other red plastic scales are made of are called Cellidor. I have no idea what it means really but just thought id point that out :D

  • if anyone has THE HUNDREDS victornox and is looking to sell please msg me

  • I hate how the swiss army knife is seen by all(including law enforcement) as "Oh it's just a swiss army knife(it's a tool)". Where as most other knives are seen as a weapon by most people.

  • very true, this blade cna really mess soemone up in the worn hands...and shoudl nto be seen as a toy, but your right...it doesn tget alot of respect as a weapon...

  • @cutlerylover haha you typing a little fast there??

  • true, the victornoxis a "weapon" in the right / wrong hands but though it is a weapon and a tool i still see it as the classic pocket knife, that I love. Keep them coming appreciate your effort in making vid jeff, cheers

  • @t3hsniper im not sure what your saying but its good that people see it as a tool

  • @KalConduitman I'm just saying that it's sad that other knives don't get that chance to be seen as a tool too, they just get classed as a weapon almost instantly.

  • I have an 08 soldier as well! They are great EDC knives, and don't scare the sheeple lol

  • It is a great knife and if you really like victorinox it is a nice one of their SAKs for every day carry because it isnt loaded with tools that you wouldnt regularly use.

  • that solider is discontined because they replaced it with a new solider..

  • To me this is a great starter knife or a camp knife. Id get one if i was going camping. Because i know my tactical cant do every thing a victornox can do.

  • i think you missed the mini blade thing on the can opener on mine it is sharpened to a little half inch blade. let me know if yours has it to

    thanks

  • Killer review!

  • i love the soldier its my favorite swiss army knife

  • i love the Soldier

  • I really like those they are great!

  • I like the sound of this knife. I was thinking of getting a new victorinox and this seems to be the perfect one. Are there any other models that you would recommend?

  • Comment removed

  • Did you even watch the video?

    He says at the end.

  • Yeah I wrote that comment before the end. I thought I removed it but I must not have. Now I have though.

  • "1"

  • Great vid, i got one a few months ago and love mine to bits. You can buy a final production run now due to the new model taking its place. So the older and alox models will most likely be collectable in time, maybe already is i guess. Thanks mate

  • i know someone that uses the punch for cigars. makes them smoke slower cause its small

  • very sweet knife... i have a soldier and i love it

  • 4th!

  • thanks for making the video 5/5
