this is very informative. I work in a big hotel with huge exhibits of fish and there we have touch pools. one of them have the horseshoe crabs and has ever wondered about their gonads. now i saw it here. great!!!
@xmazz31x I am willing to get a tank one day to own a pet like this, I just needed to know what they need in order to live, what type of water what food ect
ITS A GIANT TRIOPS! without the backflipping..and freshwater...and 30 days to like...and super fast growth...and eggs can hatch after drying out...and the whiskers...ya
I would love to go back 510 millions years ago as an observer and look at all the primitive lifeforms.....watching these horseshoe crabs is the closest one can actually do this. What an amazingly wonderful world...!
very cool! whoa! they swim when they are like little balls! :)
Yeah, their blood glows. 'is why it's so sad so many in the wild are used for specifically that purpose in the medical community, basically taking their blood, all the while, harming/killing them without any anesthesia or any concern for their comfort. :(
Every time I see one, it's crazy to think that they've been around since the dinosaurs and maybe earlier.
Tremendous video! Very educational and excellent photography. I never knew the "trilobite larva" are flourescent! I have observed them closely this year. Thank you for creating such an informative video. 5 stars!
I saw one video somewhere on TV they are very useful for medical purpose...idk if they are harmed that way but man....sea creatures hold many mysteries for many people who are sick and dying....
I was lucky enough to see the mating a couple of years ago on a beach in New Jersey. There was only a few, but I have seen videos in which there were swarms.
horseshoe crabs can live up to twenty years living that long just to mate once would be pointless and a waste of energy. and yes there is much misinformation about them one being whether the species is endangered or not, some groups claim that the atlantic species is endangered while some dont. Populations fluxuate in different areas and some confuse the atlantic with the 4 other species living in asia such as the japanese horseshoe crab which is very vunerable.
Our horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, is in a drastic decline, approx. 75 % are gone and here in Florida that is evident in the few that come to the beaches now. The 3 other species Tachypleus tridentatus, Tachypleus gigas and Carcinoscorplus rotundicauda are also in decline. In Singapore they are using this video along with others to help educate people about their population in an effort called, Adopt-A- Horseshoe Crab, hopefully these efforts can help protect this most vulnerable species.
i have a 40 gal, saltwater fishtank, an i have a baby one in it, the size of a silver dallor , very very fun to watch , he is getting along fine in his world, thanks for the info,, i have a cam i can show him to u ,
No they are not trilobites but like trilobites the larval horseshoe crabs do not have a tail. The tail developes in approx, two weeks give or take a few days on the ones I've raised. So often at this stage they are refered to as trilobite larve. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful!! They are so delicate when first born. The two top eyes are obscured by the barnicles on the adult ones. It's cool to be able to see the two top eyes on the young ones. Neautiful soundtrack. Who/ what is that piano piece?
Damn, I meant this video to be a five, but I did something wrong ........ so sorry, this video is so awesome and beautiful. Sorry. :-( It IS a FIVE!!!!

Our existence as species is about 0.0004% of the total time in years these guys have lived on Earth.
How the hell did these guys outlive so many other species!?

Strange. Our professor told us that horseshoecrabs die after they laid their eggs.
Broemmelkamp69 2 years ago
Sometimes even a "professor" needs to review their materials. Too much misinformation out there about these animals as it is.

No they don't. Though they may look intimidating, they're actually pretty harmless.
I guess the facehuggers in the Alien movies are inspired by Horseshoe Crabs.
