@drewsuschrist I use a flat bladed hot wire cutter such as a tipi or the freehand router from the Hot Wire Foam Factory. It requires a series of passes to get the effect. Many wire cutters will leave the strings you mention and sometimes you just need to lightly sand them off. I use a stiff old toothbrush and that gets rid of most of the mess. The temp of the blade can effect how stringy the finish is as well. For these pieces, since I was casting them, I cleaned them a lot.
I'll throw a quick and maybe too easy idea at you for the 6mm walls. Snow/winter. Just some spots of white, drifts in some places, and brown grass- boom. Napoleon in Russia. Not much call for it, I know. But you can at least hold the option out there.
@rastan1977 Thank you for the compliment. I don't do tutorials at the moment, but the masters were carved from insulation foam using a hot wire tool. Then they are cast from silicone molds using plastic/resin and expanding foam.
You could make your desert piece(excluding cacti) without the cutouts, then bury magnets in various locations, then make your cacti pieces with beveled edges and magnets. The beveled edge cacti pieces is placed at the magnet location on the desert peice, versus having to make cutoffs and have the variance between the cutout and cutout hole. Just an idea.
do you think it could help to have a beveled edge on those removable cactus discs (instead of a flat vertical edge)?
That way the seam line/crack wouldn't be quite as visible. (So that the cactus discs are overlapping the area terrain base at the edges of their bases. A small weak magnet might be nice too.
@chicophi220 Interesting ideas. I'm not sure a magnet would be needed as they sit pretty well in the base, but hiding the seams better is a thoughtful goal. The trouble is the cut to remove the disk leaves a gap as the blade removes material. (Is that called the blades 'kerf'?) Would need to cut the holes, and then cut larger disks from another piece. Tricky. One advantage of the gap I noticed is that you can paint the sides of the disks and even have a little sand on them n they still fit
@Terranscapes I see how that could be a problem. Maybe adding an additional disc with a larger diameter than the cactus disc piece, which could cover the hole entirely. Place that on top of the cut disc in a way that keeps it relatively flush with the rest of the base. That could achieve a more seamless integration of the removable vegetation.
@chicophi220 Hmm... I suppose you could top the disk with a thin sheet of styrene a couple of mm wider. Would need a compass, and one with a scoring blade would be great. Going to give that some thought. Thanks for the feedback!
me i shud do some desrt plants to will awhay like cattie (whot ever) seen at train and craft stores and cool and got orgenies my tarain to ben biza with AMAZONS look fore them LOL
@matsuyorei I have been but I'm reexamining that for when the store opens again in November. I may discontinue the unfinished/unpainted options as I may be offering too many different products for one man to keep track of easily. ;) Keep an eye on the newsletter on the main TerranScapes website for updates as November draws closer.
If you don't mind me asking, how do you make your cliff walls look like that? What tool(s)/technique(s)?
My "Styro Cutter Plus" leaves a lot of stringy melted polystyrene behind. My wire cutter obviously gives a much different look.
Thanks in advance. I really enjoy all your videos. You are highly inspirational and verbose. I wish you all the best.

You know a distance shot of the Mesa showed the color better. So that might work for an ending or beginning shot. Still great work..

@437cosimo I noticed that as well. :) Good idea to use the distance shot for better color representation. Thanks.
