It's so great to find other fans of movies I like! I was sick this weekend and just re watched all 4 hours of this after having seen it and loved it years ago. I'm so glad I still have the video, because you're right, it's hard to find. (It's not been released on DVD in the U.S., which is strange.) This role is why I fell in love with Nathaniel Parker :)
The 1967 version with Julie Christie came out on video ( 2 box set) in 97'. It is Excellent! I Contrary to the beliefs about video tape deterioration, it's picture is still amazingly crisp. Not bad for 13 year old tapes. Of course it is panned and scanned, but tastefully done. A plus side to a good pan and scan is a little more intimacy with the close-ups, and a nice quality of the film grain comes through. The negative side is peoples heads get chopped off. Which movie is the best version?
I just watched "A Kid In King Author's Court" with Paloma Baeza. She was so great that I had to see what else she'd done. So weird seeing her a bit older here.
Yes, it was on PBS about 10 years ago. It was not a BBC adaptation but ITV. It's available on video I think. It;s a million times better than the Julie Christie film. I love Nathaniel Parker in this role
Love this film. I love the book and Gabriel has always been one of my alltime heros. I love how he always comes to her rescue without asking anything in return, only hoping. It breaks your heart at times. I love the way the novel ends. For once the ending is not so direly tragic as other Hardy works. Great film version, closest to the original book. Thanks for posting these.
life was so hard back in the days.....everything done by hand,,,,,,,its was just simple mixed with complexity,,,,,,,,,,I love english dramas such great writers...,,,tess od dubervilles is another great........and the way we live now
Doigtsdepoussiere: you are a saint, a gentle(wo)man, a kind and generous human being. Thank you for posting this!!! We can't get this in the U.S. and I was salivating just watching the short clips people had posted. I haven't watched it yet (but LOVED the book), so I'm going to cut some time and watch them ALL IN A ROW! Thank you!
I thank you for your warm words. I'm happy that you enjoy it; it's the same problem here in France, you can't find it anywhere. Eight years ago I saw the last 2 or 3 minutes of this BBC adaptation and I absolutely wanted to watch the whole thing! I'd been searching for it everywhere for so long, and I was more than excited when I found it, so I really understand how you feel!
Thank you so much for uploading this!! I regularly checked here to see if someone would upload the movie and today i found it!!! I have wanted to watch it again for years... I love the story. Gracias!!
This is the Hong Kong version, which is slightly edited with a few scenes missing from the original.

What is that that Troy passes Fanny at 1.32? Is it some kind of memento? Anyone!
