@monkeytown1000 particularly the homeless! a lot of homeless communities mixed it with fruit juice and drank it as a mixture called "jungle juice" or "squeeze".
@lamiamano Youre right Luca, there is no need to compare all those great Bues artists. They all have their own style, but one thing in common : FEELING !
Well the faustian story isn't believable in either case. Both Johnsons recorded just a few songs but both are immortal not because of any supernatual deal but because we keep them alive thru our fascination with their lives and music. Great stuff kickingmule. Glad I found your channel.
@seymourbbest Thanks for the comment, which says all, I guess. At least, I just agree ! Great music is to be shared and its my privilage to present some great Artists from my collection, which is a heritage after my Grandpa !
My motto is : Keep the Old Blues Alive, or Keep It Stupid Simple ( KISS )
Okay, I'm gonna make an ass of myself and make the obvious comparison. He has a hell of a voice, but Robert Johnson could play a much meaner guitar. The Faustian story is more believable in Robert's case.
@drockkclapton Well, you have your oppinion and I agree, Robert Johnson was/is outstanding, when it comes to present a song. Good git playing as well as blues feeling.
I think it all depends on the difference beetween a Bluesman and a Bluessongster. The Bluesman, like Robert, played his stuff different from time to time, but the Songstwers, ,like Tommie, played it the same everytime. Ya, like a troubadour.
No hard feelings, cause it all depends on ones taste !
I use Stefan Grossman's transcription which is great but apart from the fact that it's in Dropped D, the transition to the initial D chord just makes my fingers go walkabout. I'll get it eventually.
I agree in what you are saying. Life is sometimes hard and its rather common among good artists drugs are involved. I can't blame them, nor can I understand, but as you say Tommy's voice and Bluesfeeling is Outstanding !
man...this song is full of torment and despair....its a very sad song..its the real fucking blues...imagine being hungry ,skint and addicted to parrafin[petrol, gasoline type of substance]. you can hear this horror, madness, shitty life in his voice and the music. it aint easy listening, its more like a history lesson or documentary.only an artist can communicate this but to me its not enjoyable its educational.
Hey very good sound on Tommy! How did you clean this old classic so good! Tommy was the bad man that gave Robert Johnson the idea of a sinister background to boost his legend! Hey again, damn how good Tommy sings on this one, and how much he resembles the light voice guy in Canned Heat (Rob Hite??)... GREAT SONG AND SOUND!
as a homeless little kid, i drank this stuff twice.
then i started doin other things. terrible what lengths some (including myself) have gone to to get fucked up, but what great blues it makes

'Canned Heat' was the methyl alcohol in 'Sterno' cooking fuel, it wasn't even ethyl alcohol usually found in alcoholic drinks.
'Meths' is terrible stuff and will kill you very quickly, but a lot of African-Americans in the south at the time drank it.

Let's not compare these greats.
Each one of them has a message we can understand and what's fantastic is that each one has his style, his groove and soul to discover.
I love them all from CharliePatton to BB King.

I prefer to strum the chords, its a 12 - bar blues, so it works.*smile*

yeah, i love the comment too,but how could anyone be addicted to paraffin??? O_o
DajaWaja 2 years ago
Sorry to say ,its all true !
Almost every old Bluesman had some kind of addiction.
If you are poor and no money to buy what you want, you take whatever comes in your ways, to get "high".
I know it's sad and wrong, but we can't blame them and I'm sure you don't !!!
Even today, we have artists who are addicted to drugs of some kind.
Thanks for your comment and
