It really doesn't have much to do with "speed"... it has to do with video card. You need a good enough card to handle the hardware 3D acceleration. I'd personally recommend nVidia over ATI, and I would get at LEAST a 7600. I am happy with my 7950. Stay away from "low" numbers. 7950 is better than say, 8600. Think of it like 7xxx and 8xxx... the first numbers is the series, the last three could be looked at as "how good is this card?"
ok. yeah my video card can handle the 3d I am running ubuntu hardy heron with the beryl compiz fusion. I can do the 3d desktop I was just wondering what is needed to run windows xp alongside ubuntu smoothly like yours.. I was looking into the dell Intel Pentium dual-core processor E2180 (1MB, 2.00GHz, 800FSB) with 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs and video is nVidia GeForce 8600GT-DDR3 256MB. would this be able to handle what you do?
Yep; that'd work. I'd really recommend you go up to 2GB of RAM though. 2 is a bit low. Consider, you'll have TWO operating systems running simultaneously. If, for example, you give 512MB to your Windows virtual machine, then that leaves only 1.5 GB for Linux. 4GB RAM just gives you more flex and you'd never have to worry about it. Good luck! It's so much fun, and SO productive.
Linux does indeed support DirectX 10 graphic cards. I think you mean DirectX 10 itself. In that case, yes, there are projects in active development that merge DirectX 10 gaming into Linux (as well as Mac). But one of the biggest things I love about Linux is its OpenGL usage, anyways. What does this have to do with Beryl? ;)
That is completely untrue. You might be referring to vmware-player which is NOT the same thing as VMWare Workstation. Don't compare apples to oranges, and don't go making claims that you can't back up with real stats.
Statistics show, what you want to show with statistics. Benchmarks are to compare what you want to compare and don't show the reality entirely, but one part of a many parts of it.
Sure can! VMWare Workstation Beta 6 is currently available for FREE from their web site. Otherwise, you can use VMWare Server Edition; but Workstation gives you better features for desktops.
Yeah - Mac's deceptive advertising makes people think you can only do this on a Mac. This is a PC, baby. Mac's biff is with Windows - but most of what they're using to market their platform (ie. Parallels) is available on PC, it's all about the OPERATING SYSTEM, not the computer (especially now that Mac is using Intel processors). Why spend 3x as much for the same thing?
Thanks. It's very functional, and sleek. I love working in this environment. I finally feel like my computer is the way a modern computer should be ;)
Beryl is a Linux application. Windows Vista has a "similar" concept to some of its graphics, but it does not come anywhere close to comparing with Beryl. If you want to run Beryl, start by installing a Linux operating system, and then if you want to use Windows, you can either do what I did here (install it using VMWare Server - which is a free download), or you could dual-partition (primarily only necessary if you want to do some hardcore gaming).
Can i run all my windows apps on it like ati drivers the new microsoft office and my windows based games? Becouse if i would do that and it couldnt then i trow away a lot of money :-(
1) It's free, so the only money you've wasted is on Microsoft Office. 2) Yes, you can run any Windows application within the VM - however games are still too iffy to say they'll work. This is an ideal office environment, but for games you may consider dual-booting, which gives you the best of both worlds. That's what I do, and I use this (what you see in the video) as my main OS.
Thank for the helpfull response :-) but i did something really stupid yesterday :-( I wanted to install my internet modem drivers and as i learned linux isnt anything like .exe installation but with commandos so i learned a bit yesterday downloaded the stuff and kept going.... But the commands didnt work at all.. so now i really dont know how use those commands and stuff (terminal isnt it?) So now i installed vmware on my XP and Ubuntu as a host.
If you haven't got your networking set up, you're best to not install VMWare yet; because otherwise your VM will never have an Internet connection. When you say "Internet modem drivers" do you mean you're using a USB DSL modem?
hey where can i get that please tell me send me the links

@dapictures I got NVidia Quadro FX 1400. That is way low, and it is still better than an ATi or Intel QFX.
