  • Her voice was so multi dimensional its unreal, she could be soft and gentle, powerful and almost destructive and more importantly she had a natural sonic beauty in her voice! She could touch your soul! Brilliant stuff, thanks for uploading ;-)

  • Loved Joan Sutherland's voice, thanks for posting this treat!

  • Voice is heavy and she scoop. Top notes are great.

  • Brilliant and perfect ! And, by the way, I agree tottally with Paules8460, about the "costume designer" ....insane man or woman, for sure !! LOOL

  • Addio, stupenda.

  • How about some VOLUME?

  • This legend has one of [if not the] most beautiful and controlled trills in the history of opera.. just wanted to let this out there ^.^

  • Great voice.

  • @anableps67360 what a vile & disgusting thing to say

  • @anableps67360 e tu sei una stronza!

  • such perfect control. What a beautiful voice :-)

  • here we go again, this is great singing and I was at one of the performances. Calls Caballe and Sutherland. How lucky we are to have heard them all. All fantastic for different reasons. If you are great there is a reason, you are different. They were all different and all great. Lets just enjoy, because if they were not so we would not be talking about them!

  • Joan was world class for sure, though her sound never really appealed to my ear. For this repertoire give me Calls or Caballe.

  • She scoop, her voice is not that beautiful here. High notes are great, middle not great.

Go to Caballe or Callas - i have heard better.

  • @tebaldicallas so if you have heard better,..what the hell are you doing here?

  • @frankjopie how's tebaldicallas supposed to know he/she has heard better before even seeing the video? your comment makes no sense.

  • What year was this please?

  • @liedersanger1 I think it is from circa late 1984 or early 1985 from The Australian Opera's production in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House where they staged quite a few operas. The company is now called Opera Australia.

  • @liedersanger1 1978 in Sydney, Australia.

  • "la Stupenda" at her finest...nothing forced in the tone...just listen to the beauty of her voice. She could have 'over-sung- but didn't.

  • I loved you the very first time I heard you. I will never forget any of the performances I saw and heard you in. THANK YOU!!!

  • Joan, You have been my favorite since the very first time I heard you. I will never forget any of the performances I saw and heard you in. THANK YOU!!!

  • No way, nothing like the very young Joan...

  • She just seemed to make it all sound effortless, and doing it with the most beautiful voice that I have ever heard!

  • For sure ... Joan Sutherland ... the best technique and voice ever heard....

  • Thank you Dame Joan Sutherland for having given us so much.

    We will allways love you.

  • Lovely Sutherland, forever

  • *sigh* she will indeed be missed, such a beautiful voice

  • She was the best of all Madame Lidoine in the Dialoque des Camérlitas. In English. |Soooooooooo beautiful. She is one of the greatest. I love to hear this heavenly voice........

  • RIP MAESTRA !

  • THE best- R.I.P.

  • Never got to actually experience "live" performances, but listened (and still do) avidly to her recordings, and now the videos that have been so graciously provided conntinue to uplift the spirit. Yes, she "was a miraculous opera singer, to be sure." Meetng her several years ago here in San Francisco @ the North Beach Tower Records was a joyful experience! She was the greatest of them all!

  • Yes Dame Joan Sutherland left this earth on Monday 11th October 2010 . She had been ill for a number of years and just three weeks ago she fell and broke both her legs. She never recovered from that fall and sadly the wolrd is now a uch pooer place for heres. Considerd to be the greatest Collaratura Spoprano by all musci critics alike across the operatic world. RIP Dame Joan. We saw many of your perfomannces in Australia and in Covent Garden. Thanks for the wonderful memories

  • I really like Dame Joan Sutherland, rest in peace

  • What kind of costume designer decides to put a "cancer-of-the-jaw" strap around an opera singer's chin??

Joan S died a couple of days ago at age 83. She was a miraculous opera singer, to be sure.

  • @Paules8460 HAHAHAHA re: strap. LOL LOL perfect summary

  • @Paules8460 Joan was amazing throughout her career. You're right too; the costumes were appalling!

  • Totalmente de acuerdo, su voz no desaparecerá. Descanse en Paz y gracias por deleitarnos con esa maravillosa voz. Ahora le cantará a Dios.

  • RIP DAME JOAN ... SADLY MISSED

  • Rest in peace, Dame Joan, you grabbed our ears and our hearts with your beautiful voice. And you and your husband saved so much of the bel canto repertoire for us.

  • 1926 - 2010

the sky will be darker, the opera world has lost one of its brightest stars who brought so much joy to so many for so many years. thank god for technology. we will enjoy the recordings of the arias that delighted audiences around the world. - christel

  • What a voice! She and Callas were in a league of their own. Please, let's not compare the two. They were both incredible opera singers and I don't think one was better than the other. They were both terrific. R.I.P. Joan Sutherland.

  • @wavy2525 While you're right in the fact that they both were in a league of their own, I have to say that there is an aspect in the comparison of them two that is a night-day difference. And that is the fact that while Maria Callas didn't have a perfect technique, she prided herself in dramatising the text she was singing so that even with your eyes closed she touches you. And Joan was the oposite: a great vocal technique within which the text was just a mushy by-product.

  • @wavy2525 eee...there is nothing to compare. Callas will make you scream bravo while you can drink coffee or something good and in 20mins you will talk about something different. I just listened her casta diva with nearly 2 000 000 views. Then i again...and again listened to this lady and i wouldn´t allow to breath loudly when she sings. I just put my dick between ass and head between shoulders and just tried to feel this. She is human and great artist. Not artificial, but real artist.

  • @wavy2525 Grandissime e incomparabili !!

  • @wavy2525 I agree. Although Callas didn't have the greatest intonation, and Sutherland's diction was not always the most comprehensible, they were both spectacular singers, very different in their approaches and voices. Listen to Callas' performance of "Mi babbino caro" with the Italian Radio Orchestra here on YouTube and you'll see a brilliant performance, as well as Sutherland's in Vissi d'arte, etc.

  • Good bye, Dame Joan... and thank you! R.I.P.

  • RIP..♥¤☮

  • Rest in Peace.

  • She did not need to act, because of the pure beauty of her voice. RIP Dame Joan. Never to be forgotten!

  • R I P Dame Joan. A true marvel. Just saw the news.

  • Sing forever "La Stupenda"....great duets with Mr.Pavarotti will now fill up the concert halls of heaven....You were never a diva, but a singer!

  • @Oberon90 I couldn't have said it any better myself.

  • Both Sutherland & Callas were vocal geniuses, however I feel that Dame Joan's voice was slightly better. She is without a doubt the greatest female singer to have ever lived.

  • A voice as pure as her's will echo forever. We'll miss you Dame Joan Sutherland. Thank you.

  • R.I.P. Dame Sutherland.

  • You sang for us, and enriched our lives beyond imagination. Now, may flights of angels sing for you. Rest in peace Great Lady, with our eternal gratitude.

  • Rest in Peace, Joan. We will miss our stupenda.

  • I had the great pleasure of seeing her in every role she sang at the Garden - she was sensational! Rest in peace our Joan!

  • Rest in peace Dame Joan your work here is done. You are now with the angels and making their songs the sweeter for your presence. Udoubtedly the finest of all voices in the last 100 years and a very special lady. You will be sadly missed by your millions of fans world-wide. Thank you for your wonderful works while you were with us and for the memories your recordings will envoke for us all.

  • R.I.P Joan Sutherland You Will Be Missed!!!!!

  • Very poor translation. "Casta Diva" means "Chaste Goddess". The Priestess is calling for the return of the full moon to come, thus it should be a dark moon and not a full moon as the set designer has done here.

  • Rust in vrede, lieve Joan. 11/10/10

    Rest in paece, dear Joan.

  • I was very sorry to hear of Dame Joan Sutherland's death. She will always be remembered as one of the finest coloraturas of the twentieth century.

  • One of my favorites! She was great

  • e m o

    RIP

  • the greatest soprano, no, the greatest of all the voices in the last 100 years. The voice of La Stupenda is now where it belongs. God let us keep it for 83 years, but now he wants it back

  • Wonderful talent, great loss! RIP.

  • R.I.P. Dame Joan Sutherland (1926-2010)

  • RIP

  • nice costume

  • Gosh... how did she mangage. may of the chorus are only there because there is no other place to sing.

  • i envy those people who have celt in their blood, i can learn about celtic history and stuff but cant feel the true meaning of what Norma's story actually means.

  • @thekillerbeach

it has nothing to do with blood. it has everything to do with understanding the culture.

  • @raigekimaru oh wow! Then I guess I need to study the culture very very hard!Celtic culture is very romantic and beautiful.Don't you think?

  • @thekillerbeach

I would agree. I haven't studied celtic culture much, but I love the general vibe of it, and the fact that it dates back more than 10,000 years!

  • This performance is better than the one posted by magghot (1981). I see that wardrobe decided to put a scarf around Dame Joan's neck - that looks constricting, but I know it was probably to soften her strong jaw and neckline. In the 1981 recording, Dame Joan probably decked the wardrobe attendant if they tried that again ;).

  • i like callas voice coz it sound great . but sutherland voice is great too, soft calm spiritual.

  • i can't understand a word, her voice is good but her intonation is horrible!

i prefer caballe, callas, dessay and a lot more!

  • @henry10011966

dessay? perhaps she could sing this piece, but certainly not the whole role

  • I don't understand the critics, Joan's lower register is fine here and the role fits her like a glove

  • Dear Joanie! Absolutely lovely. Thanks for the post.

  • awesome

  • Can anyone tell me what year this was?THANKS

  • @liedersanger1 The performance took place in 1978. The DVD was released on 2006.

  • The song is actually a prayer, so it is calmed and profound which makes it very difficult to sing. Callas used to sing this song differently.

  • She looks like she has one big tooth ache.

  • I prefer Callas for the whole opera. But in "Casta Diva" or "Mira, o Norma" or many other parts: Sutherland is perfect. She always sung belcanto, her technique is flawless. Casta Diva, difficult as it may result for other singers, is no big deal for Sutherland. Even if you hate Sutherland, you cannot tell her "Casta Diva" is not superb.

  • Awesome, We already miss her on stage

  • zzzzzzzzz......

  • reminds me of Netrebko

  • you mean Netrebko reminds you of her...... ;-)))

  • you`re right, chronologigally seen. Just happened because I had seen Netrebko first

  • a little lower than her comfort zone, but she did a wonderful job as usual.

  • Certified Intergalactic! The Sutherland Star!

  • Don't agree with you!

  • @1zf nice opinion but it's just that... an opinion

  • @1zf You should identify what this list is--a British music critics' poll of several years ago--with which LOTS of people disagree. The top choices roughly parallel the to stereo-era record sellers.

  • callas

  • чудненько

  • "Are there any old Druids out there in the audience?" (Anna Russell)

  • God rest her soul...I LOVE Anna Russell. I don't have her saying that in any of my recordings but I can just hear her saying it!

  • Let's not compare Callas and Sutherland at all, at ANY stages of their careers. BOTH were magnificent, BOTH were VERY different from each other, and both declined as they aged, as do we all. I will always say, "BRAVA LAS DIVINA, BRAVA LA STUPENDA!"

  • Well stated.

  • Right. We all have our preferences, but the two artists were just too different to declare one superior over the other.

  • AMEN! Well said! :-)

  • Callas... la gran voz fea. Por supuesto que hay que comparar en la opera... Varnay es mejor que Jones, Sutherland es mejor que Callas, etc, etc.

  • i do very much agree with you. its very frusterating how many people get all riled up when someone says something bad about their favorite. they both have very different sounds, and you cant just say one is better than the other.

  • @artdanks

seriously, I can understand some comparisons, but Callas was a soprano sfogato with a dark mezzo timbre and a chest voice like a baritone. Joan was a bright, free voice that sailed over the clouds (pardon the poetics but it's true) and was a dramatic coloratura.

  • @artdanks I agree. We don't have voices like that anymore!!

  • @artdanks

You are absolutely correct in your commentary.

Both were so good, but so different. They always will be legends, but I am sure new talents will emerge. Renee Fleming and others certainly fit that bill.

  • listening to the negative comments here is rather amusing, except that they show a terrible ignorance of sutherland's greatness and of bel canto style and vocalize. firslty sutherland sang casta diva in its original key of g, callas sang it in the traditional transposition down to f--to make the high tessitura for her like other sopranos had done before her, and since. and anyone who complains about a trill embellishment at the end of this bel canto aria, doesn't a thiing about bel canto .

  • I like them both but Callas was called the "great ugly voice" for a reason. She was a force of will. Fiery, dramatic. Dame Joan and apt technician, great clarion voice. Again, very DIFFERENT. Thanks for the info on the transposition of keys.

  • Haha! But in this clip Sutherland is singing it transposed down!! Bang it out on the piano, my friend. They are definitely three A flats leading up to a B flat. Although you are right that Sutherland sings it in the original key on her famous recording of Norma opposite Marilyn Horne. Nevertheless, Joan does sing this role very well; don't get me wrong.

  • Yeah. I was disappointed when she had to start transposing most of her performances down. I understand it, though...and for me a transposed Sutherland was still better than no Sutherland.

  • @dougbalt You mean three A naturals leading to a b flat.. when it is sung in G.. it is three b naturals leading to a C

  • Hako2004, Its the most normal thing to have a favourit... and when you say kgarmaker123 resents Sutherland because he prefers Callas, you do the oposite, you prefer Sutherland and resent Callas...

The most important thing is to recognize and respect the work and the amazing talent of both.

I personally prefer Callas in this one, but I really like to listen to Sutherland too!

  • Do you know why Callas is the best at this aria? Listen carefully to the many crescendo's and decrescendo;s in the uninterrupted line... that is far smoother than Joan';s.,.which is good, but not great.. Callas, has much more control over her voice, the music... and this is a role for an actress.. not just a singer.

  • After three sneering comments you can rest assured we understand....you are a Callas fan that resents Sutherland. She wasn't in her prime at this recording, she was in her fifties. It is a fine performance regardless. Don't compare a young Maria to an aging Sutherland, Maria wasn't singing at all at this age. Dame Joan had to work harder as she aged, like everyone, as the voice became less reliable. Maria's was great, but her voice was frequently disobedient , even in youth.

  • I wasnt fascinated with Joan when she was young.. I have her "portrait of a Prima Donna" and it is vocalized really well, and I fall asleep each and every time I listen to it. Yes you are right about Callas decline.. She wasnt singing because she stopped singing... and chased Greeks. Joan on the other hand had a better personal life. Therein was the big difference.

  • Comment removed

  • typically when i compare sopranos i first compare overall tone and color, then technique, then maybe acting. Joan sutherland had, in my opinion, a much prettier sounding voice than Callas. I also felt Joan had better coloratura technique.

You're right about the falling asleep thing though. I couldn't possibly fall asleep listening to Callas...I would be jolted awake everytime she strains a high note in full forte.

  • Look, Joan had a pretty sound.. no doubt about it... She did not sing coloratura better than Callas.. it was just in aconventional sense prettier.. however.. all of these notes, embellishments, etc.. were written to communicate emotion, not boredom.. and.. Joan wasnt a complete bore, just mostly so.. just as Callas did not strain to hit notes forte either (not all of them..) Lets not generalize. They both were great singers.. personally I prefer listening to Callas.

  • Not bad at all, but why does she sing "Cassschhta Diva" and "quessschhte sacre"? Is that really how it´s written?

  • Her mouth just doesn't seem to get around these words. In the other performance of casta diva by her on Youtube, it is more evident here. But here too her performance lacks lustre and is not pleasing, much as otherwise respect her.

  • I agree, with you, and.. does anyone but me think she looks like(is costumed like.. and hair like.. Glenda the Good witch?.. And whats with the jaw, the mouth, and the way she stands.. making me think she is standing up on her toes.?

  • Superb! What year was this? The vowels areclear, she floats the line, she caresses the phrases, she ends with that astonishing trill, which is like a bubbling brook, and hits that difficult final note--difficult for some, in part because it's on a difficult half-closed vowel, (ch-ehhh"--lll)--cleanly and without distorting it. What more could anyone ask. Oh I now--the recitative!!!!

  • The best Casta Diva .Fantastic,sublime.

  • This is a crappy version, Sutherland not at her best and the sound muffled and scratchy. She was much better than this, and there is another version on here that is pretty awesome, although the sound quality is not good.

Sills version is more beautiful and heart breaking, and she is a better musician, but Sutherland had unequaled power. Astounding in her prime.
