At this point, I'm putting planking on the sides of the hull. But the pieces are not full length, and need to be trimmed and planed to fit. The planks will only flex so much; so they are tapered at the ends to butt up against the previous ones.
Thank you for sharing webcap. We really enjoyed it, I am hoping in a few weeks to start my own by picking up ideas from different builders, You are without A doubt the most patient builder. Great job,
Hi - where do you buy your cedar? Do you mill it yourself or buy a kit? What part of Canada do you live in (reference for cedar suppliers). Appreciate the help - canoe is beautiful!!!

Costs: Cedar for ribs/planking less than $100 CDN. Fibreglass cloth, epoxy and hardener, varnish, approx. $200 CDN. Specialty hardwoods for gunwales, keel, decks, seats, thwarts, etc. less than $100 CDN. Brass stems bands, tacks, screws, bolts less than $100 CDN. Roughly $500. Remember, it's a hobby. I buy for 1 canoe at a time and shop at retail outlets.

Awesome Job I cant believe how much work you put into a boat. How long did this take you??

Probably 75-100 hours actual work ... but it's a hobby ... so, spread that out over 5-6 months.

How many nails do you use per plank?
drail80s 4 years ago
One tack everywhere a plank crosses a rib ... 64 ribs end to end ... maybe 1500-2000 tacks for the whole job.
