I know that especially from my dad, a psychiatrist who helped people with bipolar disorder - people whose depression, when it hits, is based on neurological problems in the brain, rather than the circumstances of their lives.

Assisted suicide, of course, is a different matter, where the issue really is one of hopeless circumstances.
