This game is quite good, but has some frustrating parts: compared to games like panzer general or fantasy general, the fights are way too random for my liking: i mean a lot of units deals plenty of damage but the probabilities to hit are often quite low, so an attack can either go very well or turn into an epic fail.

But hey it's already very good for a free game :)

This is a fantastic game. Exactly what I was looking for in a way to waste time enjoyably! I wish there were editors, I don't really have time to learn the markup language, simple as it is. Also, units still get advancements so they become stronger even without additional levels.

I know what you mean, when my chars are max lvl, then this game doesnt make fun anymore. It dont have to be a 'real lvl# after lvl 4, it could be +1 to dmg and maybe 3-5 hp, that isnt much and it would be cool.

Each unit's defense is determined by the terrain it is standing on. If a swordsman is standing on grass, and it attacks an orc standing on a mountain, the swordsman gets the grass defense %, while the orc gets the mountain defense %.

An excellent strategy wargame (think Battle for Middle Earth meets Panzer General) that is very addictive. It must have been a nightmare to coordinate the development with so many people involved.

Surprisingly good 2D pixel graphics with animation too. I give it 17/20.

I dare not try multiplayer yet. :)

I still think it deserves to be shareware

to reward the authors.

Seriously though, you can donate to Wesnoth or buy clothing (cafepress), which supports site hosting, multiplayer server hosting, and drawing equipment for the artists.  Paying the developers would be difficult since there are probably >50 people who have contributed over the years. However, don't feel like you need to. Just enjoy it.

The current (stable) version is 1.4.2. In that there are already 13 (yes!) campaigns and lots of add-ons to download of course. Campaigns are great and multiplayer is very nice too. In one word,

yes, when downloading from the server it is often difficult to tell what kind of content it is (unless is has "era" or "MP map pack" in its name).

this will be fixed in the following 1.6 version (please do not ask when it will be ready, really nobody knows, we can just guess that maybe early 2009).

however the best campaigns (and it also means the most tested ones) are usually already among the 13 official campaigns in the game.

Are you talking about the High Seas Era? I handed it off to someone. It's still on the campaign server, but it's some kind of Pirate scenario now. It mostly served as a way to show people how to create eras, and it served its purpose! But, maybe you're talking about some other merperson era. There was also a mer campaign for a while.
