@keykeeperwingo It has nothing to do with creating their own music, DSO is awesome because they give kids like me, who's unattainable dream is to see The Grateful Dead live in concert, the chance to see their favorite band play live! I suppose you really must not know much of the band they are covering because the importance of live performance is what made the band who they were. Groups like DSO, Furthur, Phil Lesh and Friends, among others, are an undeniable good.

why is everyone mad? cant you see that they put a lot of work into what they do? first, imitating is very hard to do. second, music is very hard to do. how bout give a little respect for some hard work. they love the dead to this degree to have a successful cover band. what have these haters done to commemorate the dead? nothing. DSO is awesome IMO.

It's almost scary how similar Dark Star Orchestra sounds like the Grateful Dead. Saw them in concert last year in Chicago and it was just magic. If you love the Dead, be sure to see Dark Star in concert ASAP.

DSO is great. I felt like I was in a time warp. Every aspect of them is so close to the Dead. I saw them at Summerfest and I couldn't have been any more satisfied.

I saw DSO at Governors Island last year in NYC, great show, but I've been looking into their return to Governors Island this year. apparently they're building a beach right on the water that faces Manhattan. So it's like a beach party/concert with DSO and Keller Williams. So psyched, should be a pretty awesome new venue. Let me know if you know more about this new beach.

The vocal thing is a matter of taste in any case, but...a singers vocal quality is not just about tonality and technique. First and foremost, it's about conveying the idea and feeling of the song. Jerry could do this better than most and could truly BECOME the song when feeling it. When he was too high he couldn't control it or his expression at times. That aside, his ability to personalize a song, take it inside and send it back was what made him, for me, a truly great singer.

Im a 50 y.o. Deadhead with ~75 GD shows under my belt and probably 20 Other Ones/Dead shows. I still love the boys and saw them 3 times in April. But lets be realthere are no Gregg Allmans in the Dead. I often want to say, Guys, just shut up and play. There are some wonderful lyrics and some great songs, and they often hit the note, but in general, singing has never been their forte. In that respect, Warren Haynes is a huge leap forward. He has killer pipes.

To Mellodc and her critics: there is no accounting for true believers who cant admit the obvious. Like Dylan, Jerry was a good singer with a so-so voice. Weir had a pleasant mid-range voice, but would often go off-key live; now his voice is shot and he still goes off-key. His screams are cringe-worthy. Phils singing is god-awful. Pigpen could be endearing, but on live tapes, he is often off-key, and his rants on Good Lovin are embarrassing.

Don't get me wrong-I love the Dead, and Attics of My Life is a great tune. And a great vocal arrangement-sung fairly miserably out of tune with all the heart the boys could muster in the studio no less-so ya gotta figure that was the best they could do. Outta tune is just outta tune, it's not the end of the world. But-as I've gotten older, it just makes me cringe. It's not personal-just the way it is.
