I'm a musician and I've played cover shows and I say that playing my own music is a lot more fun and challenging than learning other peoples petty creations
@keykeeperwingo So everyone else's creations other than yours are petty, huh? Post some of your songs and let the e-public put your statement under criticism.
@keykeeperwingo youre saying that john barlow and the dead's creations are "
PETTY"? sounds to me like your ATTITUDE is petty. you obviously have no idea what it is to be a diehard deadhead(which is fine, of course), but to have these guys, along with the surviving memberse dead themselves to carry on the music is a blessing to us all.
these guys are also(im pretty certain, anyways)songwriters, but are making A LOT of folks happy by doing THIS.
@keykeeperwingo It has nothing to do with creating their own music, DSO is awesome because they give kids like me, who's unattainable dream is to see The Grateful Dead live in concert, the chance to see their favorite band play live! I suppose you really must not know much of the band they are covering because the importance of live performance is what made the band who they were. Groups like DSO, Furthur, Phil Lesh and Friends, among others, are an undeniable good.
@keykeeperwingo damn your original stuff must suck big hairy monkey balls if you think the grateful dead's stuff is "petty" damn i hope i never stumble into a bar where youre shitty little act is playing geez
why is everyone mad? cant you see that they put a lot of work into what they do? first, imitating is very hard to do. second, music is very hard to do. how bout give a little respect for some hard work. they love the dead to this degree to have a successful cover band. what have these haters done to commemorate the dead? nothing. DSO is awesome IMO.
@bennyvega100 if you'll lend me yr handy time machine i'd be more than willing to go back & enjoy RFK '73... otherwise, i'm headed to Birmingham for some DSO right now... chill man, it takes all types...
@bennyvega100 no, not too stoned at all... just like getting out of the fuckin' house to see some LIVE music once in a while... but have fun with yr headphones man, to each his own...
It's almost scary how similar Dark Star Orchestra sounds like the Grateful Dead. Saw them in concert last year in Chicago and it was just magic. If you love the Dead, be sure to see Dark Star in concert ASAP.
DSO is great. I felt like I was in a time warp. Every aspect of them is so close to the Dead. I saw them at Summerfest and I couldn't have been any more satisfied.
@Deweypug. Yeah, you're right. Sorry to be harsh. You are right & thank you for brining that to my attention. Let me just say that I am happy that people can find music that moves them and is a source of great joy.
@davidpw1982 Let me try to explain by quoting Louis Armstrong when asked what Jazz was.. he simply replied, "If you have to ask, you'll never understand"...
I'm not askin'. I'd seen the Dead 143 times.....played in a band with Kevin Rosen.......there's really nothing that I am in need of understanding. I get it. this band sucks !!!
I love this band because I love the Dead. I don't know how any GD fan could not appreciate this - it sounds to me like Kevin Rosen must've nailed your wife or something. DSO is the most worthy cover band I have seen and I definitely don't think you know what you are going on about, you negative fool.
i realize that they're trying to commemorate the '77 groove, particularly the Barton Hall feel. BUT I've always like the up tempo jack straw better. pick it up, boys!
going to see these guys at the end of the month..am a deadhead from the "old days" and was blown away the first time i heard these guys play...amazing how he looks and sounds like a young bobby
I saw DSO at Governors Island last year in NYC, great show, but I've been looking into their return to Governors Island this year. apparently they're building a beach right on the water that faces Manhattan. So it's like a beach party/concert with DSO and Keller Williams. So psyched, should be a pretty awesome new venue. Let me know if you know more about this new beach.
i currently work at governors island. i actually have a chance to see it today but becuz i was so sick so i missed work today... damn it1!~ i talked to a guy from the tech crew yesterday and he told me the concert is free!
The vocal thing is a matter of taste in any case, but...a singers vocal quality is not just about tonality and technique. First and foremost, it's about conveying the idea and feeling of the song. Jerry could do this better than most and could truly BECOME the song when feeling it. When he was too high he couldn't control it or his expression at times. That aside, his ability to personalize a song, take it inside and send it back was what made him, for me, a truly great singer.
BTW...Saying "fuck you" to a fellow poster is a little harsh. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and not everyone has to think the Dead are the second coming.
Im a 50 y.o. Deadhead with ~75 GD shows under my belt and probably 20 Other Ones/Dead shows. I still love the boys and saw them 3 times in April. But lets be realthere are no Gregg Allmans in the Dead. I often want to say, Guys, just shut up and play. There are some wonderful lyrics and some great songs, and they often hit the note, but in general, singing has never been their forte. In that respect, Warren Haynes is a huge leap forward. He has killer pipes.
To Mellodc and her critics: there is no accounting for true believers who cant admit the obvious. Like Dylan, Jerry was a good singer with a so-so voice. Weir had a pleasant mid-range voice, but would often go off-key live; now his voice is shot and he still goes off-key. His screams are cringe-worthy. Phils singing is god-awful. Pigpen could be endearing, but on live tapes, he is often off-key, and his rants on Good Lovin are embarrassing.
This is May 8th, 2007. the 30th anniversery of barton hall in Ithaca, New York. Not Bridgeport, CT. I was there, sweet show. You should definately fix the description.
never could catch a dead show, and i'm not going to compare dso to the dead but i enjoy seeing them and don't view them as trying to outdo the dead, theyre keeping the spirit alive and I'm happy for that, thanks dso
Great American songs, though, gotta hand it to Robert Hunter. And I love Bobby and Jerry of course. Pigpen (Ron McKernan) was the only one who could really sing, and he died too young. These guys are having fun-amazing how they actually copy the bad vocals-how do they DO that?
What did the Deadhead say when he came down from his acid trip? "Whoa-these guys can't sing at all!". Seriously , I love the Grateful Dead. I was so hooked for years, but I can't believe now how I tolerated the out of tune vocals...true Devotion and lots of acid and marijuana I suppose. continued...
Don't get me wrong-I love the Dead, and Attics of My Life is a great tune. And a great vocal arrangement-sung fairly miserably out of tune with all the heart the boys could muster in the studio no less-so ya gotta figure that was the best they could do. Outta tune is just outta tune, it's not the end of the world. But-as I've gotten older, it just makes me cringe. It's not personal-just the way it is.
go fuck yourself dude...you're either fuckin around or you're still fucked up on bad dope...but leave us alone...i believe you are fuckin around...so once again, go fuck yourself
I actually played Attics Of My Life for my high school choral teacher-trying to show him what kind of music/harmony I liked. Now I know why he had that polite but perplexed look on his face.
I'd like to hear Take 6 take a crack at it-just for musicality's sake.
Lisa is just enjoying it, digging the music--and she has a beautiful melodic voice as well. I alwasy enjoyed the Donna wails in GD concerts, but it's true that she often sounded like someone was stepping on a cat's tail.
i think it's kinda sad how much they sound and look like the dead.....i just watched the movie rockstar yesterday with marky mark and it reminded me of dso. I dont think it should have
