@DocHellfish >> It got pushed around to different time slots over the two years it was on, but it also got unfair comparisons to MASH and when audiences realized it wasn't the same show, they quit watching. It's not as good as MASH, but it had its own thing going, which I thought was good. Harry Morgan and Jamie Farr were still excellent to watch.
A definitive MASH set on Blu-Ray Disc or DVD-Video that has not only the MASH movie and the complete TV series, but also the complete AfterMASH series and the W*A*L*T*E*R pilot.
And, if possible, a complete soundtrack recording of these programs to go along with them.
I think that was an homage to his helping a soldier who tried to commit suicide. The soldier's rifle had backfired, wounding him. He wanted to die rather than let his wife see his wounds, and failed everytime he tried to kill himself. Potter finds him sniffing an unspecified gas, and opens the valves completely, telling him to breathe, then tells him that the part of the brain that wants to live is stronger than the part that wants to die.
@alexp9999 This wasn't all that bad,but Larry Gelbart(R.I.P.) would have been better off to wait at least a year after M*A*S*H ended, because it ran for 11 years as it was and most of the cast felt they couldn't go any farther or tell many stories as it was after the tenth season.
@Denn566 That was more just bad timing than the fact W*A*L*T*E*R didn't sell at all.It was pre-empted in the West while it aired in the East on account of some presidential or election announcement.
Colonel Potter preferred the "go ahead" method when it came to suicidal patients. Remember the guy that tried to OD on gas in the operating room on the original series? He was holding the mask over his mouth for heaven's sake.
MASH is one of the few shows where I wanted to see what happened to the characters in later life. Doesn't matter if this show didnt make it. It was great just to have a bit more time....
And a dishwasher in 1953 -wow! Colonels pension must've been nice.
this is AFTERMASH not MASH. it's the spinoff show after the MASH series ended. only Jamie Farr, Harry Morgan and William Christopher wanted to keep the show going so this is what they made.
@blazedylan i read that that morgan, christopher, and farr wanted to do 1 more season but the other 4 cast members wanted to end the series. This was why they wanted to do am
@the1997beast Agreed, but then why not just keep MASH going another season? Alan Alda, who had pretty much taken over with writing and directing by the last season, wanted to end it while the series was still strong. He had seen TV series dragged out and lose their quality, along with their fans' support and he didn't want that to happen MASH. If your interested in Alan Alda, go to the library and check out his first book "Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I've Learned". It's good :)
I remember when this came out. Before this is was W*A*L*T*E*R and Trapper John MD. Alan Alda was offered his own show too as Hawkeye but he thought he had been typecast enough and wanted to do something outside all of the MASH spinoffs. Loretta Swit and Mike Farrel were typecast and David Ogden Steirs I think had a few episodes on Murder She Wrote.
its strange episode u know ive neva heard about this episode and ive always wanted one of these but the feeling is wrong idk its wierd good episode though
Fr Mulcahy talked about being from Philadelphia all the time. Mentioning a father he knew named "Boom Boom" Galagher, and he mentioned more than once that he coached boxing at the philadelphia CYO.
If anything, watch the end of goodbye, farewell and amen, he mentions it there. The episode I remember him mentioning it in was where he went up to the front with radar to pick up a wounded soldier, and had to do a tracheotomy on the guy. He goes up there because a patient he talks to in the hospital from philadelphia reminices about stuff withh him. and mentions boom boom galagher. You may be right he may have started in San diego, but he says he did his seminary work in Philly. who knows.
Wait just a minute! Since when was Fr. Mulcahy from my hometown of Philadelphia? I just read it on Wikipedia that in the movie M*A*S*H, his character was originally from San Diego, but was change to Philadelphia for the series. I don't EVER remember Fr. Mulchay saying that he was from Philly. I used to watch it all the time from elementary to high school when M*A*S*H was finally taken off the air. Now that I know this, it's a shame a "Philadelphia" marker wasn't made for the M*A*S*H sign.
Whoa! Father! I've never seen him in the Hawkeye state before (and that would be the Hawkeye state of intoxication). Not even at Penobscott's bachelor party.
The troubled patient is Cowboy from Full Metal Jacket, isn't he?
