Go back AGAIN to the image at 1.13 in THIS presentation. The sky is CLEARLY blue. The sand on Mars appears to look like sand on earth. The heat shield colors are exactly as you'd find them on earth.

Lokk at the image at the 1.05 mark. Looks normal, no red tint. This is what things really look like on Mars. Still wondering why NASA is messing with the colors on Mars.
Yes, that's more accurate as to how a sky gets its colours. When is the sky red on earth? At sunset when light has to travel through MORE atmosphere. I;ve read that Mars has only 1/10th the atmosphere of the earth. So in effect, there should be far LESS of a chance that Mars has a red sky.
Also, with only 1/10th the atmosphere, where does the energy come from to create dust devils? According to, holoscience(*)com tornados and dust devils are an electric phenomenon.
no, as the images aren't meant to be in color. They are either in pure greyscale, or infrared, not our visible spectra.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
That's interesting. When NASA was asked why the sky was red. they replied that it was because the red dust on Mars was kicked up by the wind. They said npthing about greyscale or infrared.
Where does a 14 year old get such information? A link please.
Mars' atmosphere is 1/100th the density of the atmosphere on earth. How is it that such a THIN, incredibly thin, nearly non existent atmosphere can kick up enough dust to colour the sky like that?
I've been in dust storms myself in the desert. It takes a LOT of wind and dust to alter the sky's colour.
I can't believe that such a thin atmosphere could adopt a colour from such a thin, dust layer.
Virtually impossible, THINK for yourself and don't just regurgitate the propaganda.
Eject enough particles to turn the sky red? 24/7, Martian equivalent? A perpetual, planet wide dust storm?
Dust in the air at ten feet will NOT colour the image the same as at 1,000 ft. or ten miles.
Look out over a landscape. The closer objects are coloured normally. Slightly more distant objects have a slight haze and are lighter in colour. Even more distant objects (mountains) look even hazier and more washed out.
There's a gradient to the effect of dust in the atmosphere.
The colour of the sky, no matter what colourless gas dominates, IS determined by dust and water vapour. Much less water vapour and far, far less dust than earth, will produce a milder version of the sky on earth.
That would be a pale blue or off white to blue.
JUST LIKE SOME OF THE VERY EARLY PICTURES. And a few that get by, for some reason. Whistleblowers?
Twilights on earth are NOT the result of a dusty "sky". In the first place, the "sky" is not a tangilbe thing. Dust can't be in the "sky" but dust CAN be in the atmosphere.
Twilights on earth, even over the ocean, (no dust) are red. Why? Because the light has to travel through more atmosphere.
And THAT contradicts the statement that there's a perpetual twilight on Mars. A much thinner atmosphere precludes the effect.
And then there's that perpetual dust storm wich doesn't exist.
Thank you, exactly right. You make my point. You need a LOT of dust, particles, water vapour, etc, etc, to make the sky appear red.
NOT possible on Mars with only 1/100th the density of atmosphere.
When there are no dust storms, no appreciable quantities of dust and particulates in the air, the sky on Mars will look much like on earth, only diminished, washed out, light blue or whitish.
And again, not possible for Mars to have perpetual dust storms.
No doubt you are far more educated than I. That may be the problem. You have been indoctrinated. You have forgotten to think for yourself. That's a pity, you are really missing out.
I didn't say that there were NO dust storms on Mars.
The last PLANET wide dust storm was in 2001. Does that account for a red sky, virtually 24/7 Martian time, since then?
I saw the very first image and the sky on Mars was a light BLUE.
We see a red sky in the evening, due to dust, water and particles in the air scattering the longer, red wavelengths more efficiently due to the thicker layer of atmosphere that the light travels through.
That would mean that, whatever colour of the sky that you might see at noon, on Mars, the colour of the sky should ALSO be affected by the light traveling through a thicker layer of MARTIAN atmosphere.
Yet, at no time do the Rover pictures present pictures of these differences.
You say the Martian sky is red due to red dust in the air.
But note the Rover appendage shown. It has taken on a red hue. Does that make sense? Our sky is blue. Does that make everything around us take on a blue hue?
Is the dust in OUR air blue? Does that account for our blue sky?
No, just as RED dust in the atmosphere on Mars doesn't mean that the sky should appear red.
Stop the video at the 1.13 mark. Hey, look, the sky is a LIGHT BLUE. I was wrong, there ARE differences in the images of the sky on Mars. Wow, and that sky is BLUE.
Why? Why did NASA allow this one tiny glimpse of truth?
They were stuck between a rock and a place of firmer density. If they had tinted the image red, that would have clearly shown tampering. So they depended on the viewer concentrating on the heat shield and not noticing the true colour of the sky ALONG with the ground.
Oh yes, and again, at the 1.13 mark. There's the glare of direct sunlight into the camera. Notice the multiple colours being scattered just like you see with a prism.
THAT means that pure, white light, is beaming down on the scene and is being split into the colours of the rainbow by the glare effect.
I see green, red and YELLOW.
Tinting THIS scene red would have been a disastrous move.
More proof of tampering. Stop the video at the 2.33 mark, the satellite image of Victoria Crater has blue hues within the crater and some brilliant, flowing blue at the top, right hand corner. BLUE, on the ground.
Now let the video proceed to the images from Rover, at the crater's edge.
As NASA tinted the scene RED, the BLUE SKY and the BLUE SURFACE within the crater take on the exact same hue.
The same tampering, produced the same, red hue. SO, there's something BLUE on the ground.
THINK, we have this flowing blue feature at the top, left hand corner of the crater.
You would think that NASA would be curious as to the nature of the feature and what might have caused it?
Ah, but of course they were curious. What makes anyone think that NASA has released all the images that they've taken of whatreallyhappened(*)com on Mars?
Well first i must say that I'm sorry! My wife said that i was to Headstrong to listen to what you were saying! And that i should not have said that you lack a good education. She also pointed out that it has been 4to3 year since i read any of my science magazines. And that some thing may have changed as they usually do. Thing are always changing and being more refined when it comes to science. So i did some looking in to this!
According to NASA! It would seem that early estimates on what color of the sky on Mars may be a bit off. Although the sky on Mars may be pink a good amount of the time.(do to all the red dust). It does have a light blue sky! And can be seen on days that the dust and winds have settled down some. So on a good day, you will see a pink sky at the horizon and heading towards the sun turning a light blue.
So it would seem that we were both right and wrong at the same time! Good eye! But as i had stated NASA does play with the color of the photos to help scientists to see other features and to help defined them. But that does not mean that they are hiding something!
If you are interested in knowing more about NASA and Mars. Then may i say read lots of good book on these things. And once you know more. Try writing to them or a astronomer. If you show them that you have a good grasp on these things. They will be more then willing to correspond with you. And may even invite you to come and see some of the stuff that they are working on! I know that they have done this in the past. And are still willing to do that. So go for it!
In any case, they could distort all they want for their own purposes, but they could release to the public, images that are true colours.
Why would they ESTIMATE the colour of the Martian sky? They spent billions to go there to find out what's there. And they have a colour chart built into the Mars landing pad. They can easily tweak the numbers to match the colour chart and go from there, getting true colours. And they did do that and they know exactly what the true colours on Mars are.
You're telling me that NASA is tinting most of the pictures red to help define features? That's ridiculous to the point of being silly.
Look again, at the image of the heat shield at 1.13. Tell me that tinting that picture would help anyone define features better. Tell me what exactly what distorting the colours helps to define.
In my opinion, altering the colour of the images does only one thing, and that is to DISTORT, not to clarify.
if you are not willing to go and do some real research. then go and look at this photo! it has the color chart in it and the land and sky in it! and the flag to. so you know that the color are right!
google Images. media (dot) artdiamondblog (dot) com (slash) images2 (slash) VikingLander (dot) jpg
I'm looking at the Viking images showing the US flag on the side of the vehicle. The blue of the flag is WAY off, just as if the colours are manipulated.
There are colour bands on the vehicle which appear to be there for colour calibration. Of the primary colours, BLUE is missing. Instead, there's a PURPLE colour band.
thanks! my wife has not said sorry to me for some time now. now she think you are a nut! there is no yellow in the primary colors! look it up!
try this one! h t t p : / / science . ksc . nasa . gov / mars / martianchronicle / martianchron2 / issue2images / viking1panorama . jpeg it is a much better photo!

That IS a beautiful image. BUT, notice that UNLIKE on earth, the sun itself retains it's true, brilliant white colour.
On earth, not only does the SKY take on a red hue, so does the SUN.
Martian sunsets, clearly show that there's even a LOWER density of dust and other, light scattering elements than on earth.
That the MUCH less dense atmosphere extends to a higher altitude than on earth is also quite interesting. That's probably due to a lower Martian gravity.
Whilst your presenter talks, can you just show Mars, and not the humans? I can go out the front door to see humans, duh?? otherwise its good, just roll the flim of Mar's and keep out the Mug shoots of JPL humans....k??? Thank you, very much.
Are you saying that the oceans of this planet contain blue colored water? Last time I went for a swim in the ocean, the water was clear.
This is the kind of ignorance that lets them get away with lying to the public.
The OCEONS look blue because they are reflecting the blue SKY.
The sky looks blue because all the other colors (wavelengths) are scattered by the atmosphere. Only one wavelength penetrates directly and we see that as blue.
actually, water IS (very slightly) blue. Go to an deep enough indoor pool (one that doesn't have blue tile/paint) and look at water. if you have a glass of water, the amount of water isnt enough to bring out the color, therefore it looks colorless.

So on a good day, you will see a pink sky at the horizon and heading towards the sun turning a light blue.
franktastikart 2 years ago 2
Frank,
The images do NOT show a light, pinkish sky. The sky AND the entire image is a deep, all encompassing, red.
LOOK at the pictures that have not been altered. LOOK at the heat shield picture. Good god, man, it's all here, staring us in the face.
If NASA is altering the images and not telling us, HOW WOULD ANYONE KNOW?
beneehall 2 years ago
Frank,
Do a search for,
Sunset on Mars.
An image taken in 2005. The sunset sky is clearly blue, with just a hint of red.
I stand corrected, there ARE differences in the Martian sky between noon and sunset. Wow.

So it would seem that we were both right and wrong at the same time! Good eye! But as i had stated NASA does play with the color of the photos to help scientists to see other features and to help defined them. But that does not mean that they are hiding something!
franktastikart 2 years ago 2
If you are interested in knowing more about NASA and Mars. Then may i say read lots of good book on these things. And once you know more. Try writing to them or a astronomer. If you show them that you have a good grasp on these things. They will be more then willing to correspond with you. And may even invite you to come and see some of the stuff that they are working on! I know that they have done this in the past. And are still willing to do that. So go for it!
franktastikart 2 years ago 3
In any case, they could distort all they want for their own purposes, but they could release to the public, images that are true colours.
Why would they ESTIMATE the colour of the Martian sky? They spent billions to go there to find out what's there. And they have a colour chart built into the Mars landing pad. They can easily tweak the numbers to match the colour chart and go from there, getting true colours. And they did do that and they know exactly what the true colours on Mars are.
beneehall 2 years ago
Frank,
You're telling me that NASA is tinting most of the pictures red to help define features? That's ridiculous to the point of being silly.
Look again, at the image of the heat shield at 1.13. Tell me that tinting that picture would help anyone define features better. Tell me what exactly what distorting the colours helps to define.
In my opinion, altering the colour of the images does only one thing, and that is to DISTORT, not to clarify.

if you are not willing to go and do some real research. then go and look at this photo! it has the color chart in it and the land and sky in it! and the flag to. so you know that the color are right!
google Images. media (dot) artdiamondblog (dot) com (slash) images2 (slash) VikingLander (dot) jpg

sorry! i thought what i gave you would send you there.
try just.(images2 Viking Lander) and look at the first photo!
franktastikart 2 years ago 2
so did you look at the photo? if so, what color is the flag in the photo? and what color is the sky? and the color of the ground is?
there is lots of photos just like that one! just look for them!
franktastikart 2 years ago 2
And, of course, the BLUE primary colour, tinted red shows as purple.
Frank, you just proved my case in spades.
To all, just Google Viking Lander Images and the first link shows what I'm talking about.
MANIPULATION of the colours by NASA, with Viking, just as with the Rovers.
The question is why? What are they hiding?
beneehall 2 years ago
Now, what do you get when you add red to blue? PURPLE. This, in fact, proves that even with VIKING, they were manipulating the true colours.
In fact, there's a RED band, a GREEN band and a purple band.
If tinted red, the red band would remain red.
A YELLOW band, one of the primary colours would turn GREEN, just as it shows.
beneehall 2 years ago
Frank,
I'm looking at the Viking images showing the US flag on the side of the vehicle. The blue of the flag is WAY off, just as if the colours are manipulated.
There are colour bands on the vehicle which appear to be there for colour calibration. Of the primary colours, BLUE is missing. Instead, there's a PURPLE colour band.

thanks! my wife has not said sorry to me for some time now. now she think you are a nut! there is no yellow in the primary colors! look it up!
try this one! h t t p : / / science . ksc . nasa . gov / mars / martianchronicle / martianchron2 / issue2images / viking1panorama . jpeg it is a much better photo!
franktastikart 2 years ago 3
oops! i was wrong yellow is primary colors! still not awake yet! need some coffee!

and this one! Astronomy Picture of the Day July 4, 1999
franktastikart 2 years ago
In your July 4, 1999 photo, the airbag OR parachute is an OFF white, tinted red.
Not brilliant white as you'd expect.
With the Martian atmosphere only 1/100th as dense as earth's there are far, far fewer particles and any other, light scattering elements.
So, just as with the 1.13 picture on THIS presentation, any images should show a crystal clear, clarity.
Instead, we find a red tint that has obviously been added.
And the colour bands are not accurate as a result.
beneehall 2 years ago
and this one! (Sunset on Mars) just as nasa said. blue as you look in the direction of the sun. pink as you move away from it!

Thank you, very much.
kmanpar 3 years ago
All that effort to get there only to mess with the colors. What color IS the sky on Mars? Red? Why?
Some of the pics come out with a blue/white sky with a far more natural looking ground colors.
NASA, why are you lying to us?

Are you saying that the oceans of this planet contain blue colored water? Last time I went for a swim in the ocean, the water was clear.
This is the kind of ignorance that lets them get away with lying to the public.
The OCEONS look blue because they are reflecting the blue SKY.
The sky looks blue because all the other colors (wavelengths) are scattered by the atmosphere. Only one wavelength penetrates directly and we see that as blue.

actually, only blue is scattered and the others aren't. friendly side note. =)
justinwoon92 2 years ago
actually, water IS (very slightly) blue. Go to an deep enough indoor pool (one that doesn't have blue tile/paint) and look at water. if you have a glass of water, the amount of water isnt enough to bring out the color, therefore it looks colorless.

Apart from Hubble, these twin rovers are the 2nd best mission NASA ever did.

I hope I'll be there when the first humans set foot on Mars.
Stuff like this makes me love humanity.

Woops, the JPL dudes forgot to color the image at 1:12 red.
Blue sky and yellow/brownisch soil. Those are the real colors, just as you see it there.
