Sherman Hill is not part of the Wahsach Mts. It's in eastern Wyoming between Cheyenne and Laramie. The Big Boys were built to handle the Wahsach grade from Ogden to Green River. They were so successful that they ended up on Sherman Hill as well. Even ran as far east as North Platte, Nebraska.
I have always wondered how they actually articulated these monsters and no movie or video ever showed it. Thanks for actually showing it. I could run the first third of it over and over to study it. So it appears that the steam pipe on each side is articulated at the drive cyl and again above the drive wheels. Pretty cool set up. What a marvelous example of mechanical movement. Thanks for show the detail.
Very beautiful locomotive. She looks and sounds pretty convincing with the white steam pouring out the smoke stack. The articulation is quite impressive. I like the effect of the crew talking back and forth. Since we can't have full scale Big Boys running, its nice to have a realistic model like this running.
BigBoy, the largest successful engine ever created, was not only a technological achievement and trophy piece, rather a necessity for the Union Pacific Railroad. Build for one purpose and one purpose alone: to pull large tonnage over the 1.55% continuous grade up Sherman Hill in the Wasatch mountain region just east of Ogden Utah. Before BigBoy, Many other locomotiveshavefailed to climb up Sherman Hill. A helper service was needed. The UP Class 4000, 4-8-8-4 articulated BigBoy was the answer.
Well I must agree that the Big Boy is better that the Triplex. Toytrains1 you were right. Sorry if I hurted your fellings. But what does it mean Comment Pending Approval?
whats the differance new vs old??? its just age thats why its worth more..i really cant tell the differance if a 1930s train is made today..or was made in the 1930s???what do u think, and has every model train been made?
It was said the Big Boy could haul 5 miles of cars over a level grade. If this was true or if it is a myth I don't know. I also don't know if the motor on the model Big Boy could haul 5 scale miles of cars.
same hear, im kinda worried about the railking version tho cuz if u look closely, ull notice that the trucks lift off the boiler i bit much and it looks weird but im still lookin fowrd to it
u know whats a shame? when i was little i went to steamtown in pennsylvania and the only thing i dont remember from it was standing nexxt to the 4012. and i hav pictures and still dont remember!!
First, these aren't Lionel, they're MTH. Second, to me, it'w the weenie trains that look like toys. I mean, if you sneeze around them, it's pretty much a scale hurricane that blows them off the tracks! :) To each his own.
are the sounds in this video PS2 or the original PS1 by QSI? When I was a kid I loved the original MTH Premier Big Boy from 1997 w/PS1 The chuff sound on that version was awesome! It wasn't the most accurate to the real thing, but it had it's own electronic sound to it that made the chuffing unique and rhythmatic as I remember. If you have a good quality video of that Big Boy with the PS1 sound system, could you please post it and let me know!? I would love to hear those sounds again. Thanks!
Yes, but the real locomotives were never asked to run on a curve that tight either. The real world equivalent of O-72 would derail just about any locomotive ever made. Even O-128, in the real world, would be an extremely tight curve. These are some of the compromises that you have to make with models in order to get them to run.
These N scale engines keep getting better and better. Modeling railroading keeps getting better. Too bad young kids aren't into trains these days. Some are, but not many.
I know you don't have room for more cars but to test that engine get a load of flat cars and on each one put a one pound dumb bell on it and see how many it can pull i say 37 flat cars or 37 lbs.
I'm not familiar with this O-Gauge track. What is it?

Big Boy was the longest. Allegheny was widest, tallest, and heaviest. Size doesn't equate with the number of drivers.
toytrains1 2 years ago
What?!?!?!?!? Triplex was longer than the Big Boy in all regards!!!
Triplex5014 2 years ago
Sorry, but no. You need to look up the specs and see for yourself. Big Boys were approx. 132 feet long. The Triplex was only about 91 feet long.
toytrains1 2 years ago
But the Big Boy has a removeable tender so it doesn't count. Triplex has a powered tender so it counts like a part of the locomotive.

I wouldn't mind having a Boy Boy for my O Gauge layout. Though I don't like that the boiler hangs over the edge when it turns.
Still, I wouldn't mind giving it a try for myself. Great vid. 5/5

yes it does split apart in real life. thats what they did so it could do tight bends. it was genius.
nairda55555 4 years ago 3
where did you get it, and how much was it?
by the way, does it have to split apart in the front?(i mean, yah to fit the rails, but come on, i want to be a little more realistic, no affense)
meandmybuds 4 years ago
That is how an articulated engine works, it does this so it can go around tight curves.
sgprailfan 4 years ago
Did articulated trains do that in real life?
PythonFan88 4 years ago
yes, the boiler swung around on curves check out videos of the real ones
