Definitly using a lightboard. You can buy them for a few hundred dollars if you want one that can control many different strands.

The small ones run anywhere from 100-200 though.

@99GPSE not for us u can go the cheaper alternative. it was a 60 dollar box we plug all the lights into and it does it on its own we just play music

If you look closely the spiral lights do work they are just behind the other tree. This is an amazing thing to do and it looks great!

I think it was great! I think with what you had... which was good enough...simple classic yard decorations... humble ~ yet impressive. I think you should be proud of what you did there. I'd like to see a coule of the "critics" pull it off!!! :-)

If you look up musical holiday lights or visit people's webpages where they do this, you'll find that there is software and how-to guides. You'll need some electrical knowledge and some creative thinking. My wife has agreed to let me do this once we get settled into our new house so I can't wait.
