"We are fascists." That is a perfect example of what is relegated completely outside the accepted political discourse. Self-scrutiny, humility, the opposite of hypocrisy. Qualities like that are what separate Chomsky from more cynical, bitter leftists.
No, but I don't think it bothered him - frequently criticizing the liberal elite in this country and then saying (or thinking) "Please call me Professor" wouldn't make a great deal of sense.
@Webins In case you weren't familiar with Chomsky, he's an anarchist and is known to prefer being addressed by his first name. You know, anarchists aren't exactly fond of honorifics.

Professor, your state is failed. But how did the bourgeois capitalist system leave you the material prosperity to devote your life to dis"ing" the machine while you received hundreds of thousands of dollars in honorariums that allowed you such loathing? While in your life time, you have achieved the quintessential Socratic attribute of self criticism transcending the primeval ethos to ontological certitude,Professor please take the hemlock. Prove to us your lifetime skepticism was in earnest!
The AirAmerica comment is interesting. Around the time of the 2004 Presidential elections I saw Prof. Chomsky speak at a university lecture & there were two guys wearing a Kerry '04 t-shirt who came in very excited obviously thinking Chomsky was some Democrat-loving liberal like them. They walked out after the lecture with a shocked look on their face as if they had been introduced to a much larger world (Chomsky had some critical things to say about Kerry's war-mongering).
Out standing! I constantly ask people have you ever read him and they say I dont need to. "A guy said" or "I saw 3 or 4 mins of an edited video and I know". This is ridiculous. How can you know one of the most important minds of our world if you dont read what he actually says or what his position is? It Beggars Belief. I say Rock On Proffesor. I love you.
number 2 on that list, Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, George H.W. Bush had this to say about him in 1981 following 10 years of Martial Law: "we love your adherence to democratic principles and to democratic processes"

The host's calling Prof.Chomsky "Noam", is not really completely respectful.

I understand, but the host himself should have thought of showing the respect, regardless of how nice and modest Prof.Chomsky is about it.

I really don't imagine Chomsky would care.

Webins,
Prof. Chomsky prefers to be called Noam when you talk with him. He actually doesn't like it when you treat him like some special person that he is.

I think you'll find Noam prefers to be called Noam, since he despises airs and graces

If you knew anything about Prof.Chomsky, then you'd know that he isn't some crazy Marxists who hates money and capitalism.
His criticism is of the corruptin and buses that are made of it by those in power.
