MADMAHD - I appreciate your comments. But they overlook the FACT that the romans (who named the Picts *Picti*) used the word wisely. *Painted*- Not "Moorish" or "Black". The romans knew VERY well what coloured skinned people looked like. IF the picts had been black, the romans would have said "They were black", not "they were painted", which is what they were-painted in woad-not coloured. I now respectfully ask that this particular topic be closed-Any further comments will be deleted. Thanks all.
I thought this clip was about the history of the Picts? Why would you threaten to delete an intelligent debate about the history of the Picts? I would understand more if we were calling each other names and using foul language, but there is a lot of misinformation traveling around.
I gave you European (white) authors that "think" the Picts were "dusky and swarthy" which both means dark skinned. The word Pict comes from Picti which means the "painted people". How many "white" people are painted. Also, the Romans, who were at war with the Picts, described them to be akin to the Moors.
no mate you telling porkies there painted ones because they covered thereselves in woad which is blue but the carthaginians came to scotland in the bronze age and were giving land for bronze maybe thats where the african symbols were picked up from but the carthaginians were also white and the romans said we were related to the rest of the britons
"but we have ample evidence that at one time this tall, dark race held the whole of England in undisputed possession, except, perhaps, for a remnant of the HYPERBOREAN DWARFS."
-IRELAND:Historic and Picturesque by Charles Johnston(1902)
the dark skinned, nappy headed dwarf Hyperborean(ie. Pict) is where the legend of the LEPRECHUAN stems from.
LEPRECHUAN are irish i dont think you have a clue what your talking about give me the links to this proof that picts were black have you heard of dna where your from they did a test on scots to see if there was ant truth of our egyptian past and celt past both were myth were closer to the spanish
Oh god whose strangling the cats behind the guy talking. It would have been far better if the music was not so integral to the presentation for sure it may have been authentic but its entirely distracting.
Thanks Ken. You might want to check out the our profile of Iraqi painter Nael Hanna. It's called Celtic Waves... just put up parts 1 and 2 of this, part 3 on its way as I type.
Ron is a great ambassador for his country. He gets no support from arts organisations and, like me, is up against stupidity. If you like his work, commission him, he's VERY fair with prices.
Very interesting but a little annoying with the backround music.

Is that Rolf Harris makin' a' that noise in the background?
I would have preferred two little boys to that humming noise.

Moot point; it could have been copper dye instead of woad.
Arbroath did have a Black and White Minstrel troupe long after it was socially acceptable, performing regularly at the Webster Theatre.
Maybe that's where the story comes from.

No, it is NOT a history of the Picts - it is a promotional film for sculptor Ron Henderson.
Maybe try watching it?
It has a second part, also on youtube.
The Picts were not black and that is the end of it.
Take your squabble elsewhere.

The cresent moon and the star are a African symbol and the Picts were described as "swarthy". Could the Picts be of African descent?

Charles Johnston describes the two "races" that ORIGINALLY inhabited Ireland as:
1.)The Hyperboreans or Far-Northerners(ie. Picts) who were short, black skinned with nappy "crisped"(ie. "negro") hair.
2.) The Firbolgs, who were taller, black skinned with "softer" black hair and who were the same race as the TUAREG of the CENTRAL SAHARA.

Tom Church of Brechin did a maquette (sp?) for one but no-one took him up on it, which is a pity.
He DID do a Bruce one, using my noble head as the model and it's at Pictavia in Angus.
You've given me an idea.
Let's see if we can get recognition for Calcagus and Tom Curch a comission!
Dinna haud yer breath though.
