  • Ahh.... the thing is.....I knew the guy who wrote this song. We used to jam togeather in San Jose. He sent the song in to them and never herd back. Then It showed up on their new album. They didn't even bother to change the name, HAHAHA,... cause it was just an instrumental. True story

  • The real Journey as some people familiar with Journey before the pre-Perry would say.

  • wtf journey invented speed metal oh yeh!

  • Unimpressed.

  • @cathrine001 - then go away and be quiet. That's what a grown-up person would do.

  • Best Journey song that ever

  • do you have any more video from this concert?please say yes

  • I think steve smith adds a differnt feel and power this is good!! 1979 tour i think in san fran

  • @journeyvail Different? I guess. Better is another matter.

  • @journeyvail

    1980 Buddy! Read the description.

  • 1975 first album my arse wot about 1973

  • This is when Steve Perry took his potty break.

  • great song

  • where can i find this on dvd?

  • Well, it appears as though metal butt-boy 614 has hit a wall. Living your life in the past is not a good thing, dude.

  • these guys ROCK or WHAT? thanks for the post!! love em so much!!!

  • im floored is that steve smith drummin

  • Yeah, he opened for them on the previous tour drumming for Montrose as an opening act and they picked him up

  • wow.........

  • I saw them at SPAC in Saratoga NY ...FREE CONCERT just before the 1st album was released.....pretty much downhill after the 1st album...

  • journey 1st 3 albums were very good- i disagree with you

  • In what way made them worse?

  • No, after the 3rd LP. But you make a valid point.

  • The emotion every journey song brings out, especially the instrumentals of the first four albums, is amazing.

  • some pre vh finger tapping going on

  • Awesome Rendition Of The Song !! Saw Them MANY Times Pre-Perry Dayz, Gregg, Neil And The Gang = Killer Music And Great Vocals :-)

    Thanx For Posting !!

    Peace And Harmony,

    [[[[ Wild Wizard ]]]]

  • This is way too cool. Didnt think I would ever see the original Journey doin their thing on youtube. Didnt know this video existed. Thanks so much for posting it.

  • Ehm, does anyone know why they named the song "Kohoutek"? :D Does it have some deep meaning in english?

(in czech it means "cockerel" or "faucet")

  • NAMED AFTER THE (COMET KOHOUTEK)

  • I see, the guy who discovered it was Czech. That explains it. :) Thanks.

  • it means "journey will suck when Steve Perry arrives"

  • These guys were sooo awesome B4 Perry. RIP

  • Kohoutek = most epic, awesome, fantastic song ever

  • In later years (1979 and forward) Journey would play alot of their older shit in places like Japan and Eastern Europe. They would play the 3-minute bubble gum shit mainly here in the states. Occasionally they would play some older shit here, but not too often.

  • Bubble gum my ass. Both era's kicked ass.

  • I saw this show in Cincinnati - it was Journey & The Babys. Just phenomenal. Kohoutek was the highlight of the show for me. I couldn't believe they played it. Awesome. thanks for posting.

  • Fuck Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ahh the progressive side of journey

  • Neal Schon is truly one of the greatest guitar players in the world.

  • Yes, this is the shit! I remember the first time I heard Journey before Steve Perry. I instantly recognized Neal Schon's guitar playing.

  • this jam stills hold up.

  • S.Smith is considered one of the top 25 drummers of all time. He is phenomenal! Look at who all he's played with.

  • Ah yes, finally "pre-perry" Journey

  • Very cool!! Classic!!!

  • This is just another example of Neal Schon being the best.

  • Journey is one of the greatest bands ever but these early tracks are the ones that made me a true fan. That guitar player is INSANE!!!!!!

  • The Old Journey more songs of Perry and Pineda era are the best Journey so far

  • Does anybody know if you can get this old journey on dvd? smokin!

  • I know they fimed their show in Dallas during the Generations tour that included several of the pre Perry pieces, including this one with a cool flame effect, but then Augeri left the band and all of that performance will probably never see the light of day. It's too bad because they also gave us a special treat during Don't Stop Believin' - the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders came on stage with them.

  • And by the way, this concert is in Tokyo, Japan, October 11, 1980, not from Winterland in San Francisco. The only date they played in San Fco in the Departure Tour was in March 26 opening the tour

  • This concert is not from 1977, is from the Departure Tour in 1980. And,NFCLbabygirl, no member of Journey has died. Tickner, Fleischman and Ansley are still alive.

  • Witerland. What the fuck is that ? Did you mean Winterland. And the year was 1977 not 1997. Sober up. I was there.

  • Witerland 1997 !!!

  • "He really doesn't have that great a voice"?? DUH. Perry had one of the best voices in the history of music. If you like "Instrumentals" then PRE_Perry Journey is for you. However, if you like songs with LYRICS, then nothing beats the Perry era. As far as being "dated" this stuff sounds like 70's southern rock. It is VERY dated as well. To each his own!

  • 70s southern rock? This? What the fuck are you smoking? And, yeah, it may sound 70ish. It was written in the 70s moron. Before Alvin & the Chipmunks (aka, Perry & Cain) came around.

  • ya I agree, This is about as far from southern rock as you can get. This is closer jazz rock fusion. This guy obviously doesnt know shit about music.

  • I was never a fan of Stevey Perry. I loved the "Pre-Perry" Journey. Greg Rollie had an excellent voice. Steve Perry: "One of the best voices in the history of music?" I respectfully disagree.

  • And who would be a better singer? Greg Rollie? LOL

  • iqman41--I'm with you, I love Greg Rolie's voice. Check him out in his own band now (you can find it if you google it), his voice is 100% as good as it was when he was young.

  • right on.

  • I know there's all kinds of love for Steve Perry (apparently not in this group), and when I was a little kid, I was "in love" with Steve Perry more than anyone, I wore out all my Journey albums, but now listening to it all over again, the old Journey w/ Gregg Rolie is such a more mature and talented sound than the Steve Perry Journey. He really does NOT have that great of a voice, really. It's a very dated, pop sound, not suited for rock music (case in point: Oh Sherry.. 'nuff said!!).

  • Finally, the good stuff, back in the days when the songs went beyond the three minute love tunes that they became so popular and successfull for with Steve Perry.

  • this band needs greg back

  • Great video. Watch the "of a lifetime" video first, then this one. Wish the entire concert was on here to view. I didn't realize that they still played some of these songs when Perry and Smith were in the band. This concert is from 1980! Awesome stuff!

  • that is insane

  • neal is by far the best ever, you just feel his shit, eddie who they call him fingers haha, dont think so

  • Wow, Unbelievable! This reminds me of Godsmack with guitars! I have every cd of Journey and now I'm asking for these old ones. Thanks for the eyeopener. I agree with eribalsch, I want to see more!

  • This was the real journey sound before Steve P. Awesome music that nobody ever takes about.Everybody should check out there first three albums. They will blow you away.Awesome true Bay area rock sound. This is before they sold old to am radio.

  • Attention! What happened to the other old Journey songs that were on Youtube like Topaz? Humboldtmyche, or something close to that username has removed all his Journey songs/vids! Please bring them back someone!!!!

  • Jonathan Cain is better than Rolie cain wrote more hit songs than rolie, and he has much much bigger muscels

  • Um, wtf?

  • Very deep comment. sarcasm?

  • Writing more hit songs doesn't mean you are better, it just means you know how to write hit songs and work out. Gregg was concerned with quality.

  • Tickner left to go to medical school....maybe it was Aynsley, or maybe Robert Fleischmann?

  • It's interesting to see Journey in the Pre-Steve Perry days.

  • who ever says journey sucks or can not jam. needs to get thier head out of thier BUTT. and listen to the first three albums...This band will always live on

  • Which one of them died? I know one of them was fired because he had lots of thing going on with lots of under-age girls. Yes, I truly do believe to this day Neal is one of the best guitarist I'VE heard. Personally, I like them more later!! Sorry if I make anyone mad. You'll be ok!

  • ...The REAL Journey..."Steve" who?...hee-hee...

  • Gregs boot rock!

  • jonathan cain isnt a man enough to play this song.

  • I have seen Jonathan play this song and he did a fine job on it. He has a different style than Gregg, Jon is more classy while Greg gave Journey a more sassy approach

  • these songs/instrumetals before Perry, are amazing. I love this journey era. I wish those cd's would be re-mastered.

  • Neal Schon absolutely kicks holy ass. He's certainly one of the most underrated guitarists in rock history-dude was playing in Santana at 15. By the way, Steve Smith CAN play, though I prefer Aynsley.

  • Agreed,

I saw Steve Smith with Montrose open for Journey about this time, guess that's where they found him to replace Dunbar, still miss the original line up

  • hey is this anyware on limewire?

  • look to the right --> for the studio version with extended begining/end, wonderfull 5 star performance, both versions.

  • Aynsley Dunbar is one of the best drummers EVER

  • what ever happened to a.d. why did he stop with journey?

  • He couldn't stomach the direction the band went after the Next album

  • Decided to cash some checks and went to the Jefferson Starship, not sure after that

  • Plus, Dunbar was an EXTREMELY busy session drummer and played with many other bands in between Journey albums. Dunbar is one of the most prolific drummers from that time. he didn't "need" to be with Journey, he could pick & choose projects he wanted to do.

  • Except the drummer in the video is Steve Smith...

  • Oh come on Steve, you can't play Aynsley's licks? I just lost my confidence in Steve Smith, someone please refer me to another video that would impress me thoroughly. I had regarded him as arguably the greatest drummer ever.

  • You're right. I've seen 3 year olds on YouTube play better than Steve Smith. It just detracts from Neil Schon's guitar playing and makes him shoulder the load. This is a power house song built for live performing. Here, it's teetering on soul-less exhibitionism. What a lame-ass putz!

  • "You're right. I've seen 3 year olds on YouTube play better than Steve Smith."

    That was joke, right?

  • Schon + Rolie ruled, for sure. The first 3 albums are by far the best they've ever made.

  • They were even better with Dunbar on drums. Kohoutek was a showcase for his heavy sound.

In the early days, if Journey was promoted properly nation wide they wouldn't have had to ruin their act by adding a front man. Gregg Rolie should never have had to take a back seat.

  • OH I miss the pre-Perry stuff. It was a completely different band. The post-Rollie fans are a different lot entirely in their musical interests

  • The first 3 Journey albums were very trippy acid metal, once Perry arived it bacame alcoholic metal. So cool to see this vid!

  • gregg rollie

  • FUCK

    STEVE

    PERRY!!!!!!

  • This is Wonderfully fearless shit - grab the air guitars Gents!

  • You know what...despite the love/hatred thing for Perry's arrival, I actually love both incarnations of the band. Journey pre-Perry does it for me in a way I never thought possible...I could listen to it every day and never tire of it. But Perry also did some amazing things, and if I had to choose a pop singer to admire, it would be him.

  • totally different band in your face progressive rock that kicked yur ass before mr pop steve perry joined that first album is and always will be the jouney that I prefer to recognize

  • Those first three Journey albums were so darn good. I could just cry when I think about the day they added Steve Perry. Yuk.

prog,,,I'd put Topaz up there as well.

  • I first saw the original Journey with Schon,Rolie,Dunbar, and Valery at a small club in Dallas in '76 called the Longhorn Ballroom(still there)and after the concert had drinks in their dressing room with them.I'll never forget it.Go see Neal in concert solo sometime and you'll love it.Over the coming years I saw the newer Journey a few times and I think Steve Perry sucks!I'm strickly a guitar guy though so it's just my opinion!

  • Ahhh, fond memories... a very challenging piece for us young drummers back in the 70s was the studio version of this song; if you could play Kahoutek, you really had your shit together.

But it (the studio version) was Aynsley Dunbar.

Interestingly, Steve Smith plays virtually the same, exact stuff Dunbar did in the studio version of Kahoutek.

In other words, not only is his original drumming awesome, but Smith could mimic Dunbar beautifully.

  • Wow. So this is pre-perry Journey. Pretty good. But Steve Perry to me is and will always be Journey.

  • IDIOTS !! this is back in the day ,was probably stolen from a winterland S.F. weekrnd made in JaPan mY ASS !! neil schon &tony iomi WOO -HOO were the best where is that bitch PERRY er FAIRY 2005 sucked kiddies

  • I never saw them perform this with the original band, but they always started the concert with a taped version of this. Then they would blast in with I'm Gonna Leave You from Look In To The Future album. They were waaaaay ahead of their time. And then came Perry... No Comment...

  • This is great song. Schon kicks ass on this song!

  • Raw Journey! This is how it all started. Notice Steve Machine Gun Smith (Drums)who can tackle any genre of music.

  • Yes. Smith is a damn good drummer.

  • The first 3 Journey albums were some of the best music ever recorded. Then came Steve Perry... Except for Dream after Dream... Nothing much to speak about.

  • I agree with you -- a bit. My favorite Journey album is Next. Even without Perry, that album just rocks from start to finish.

Perry pushed them out of the club/fusion/jam band scene into the mainstream. Infinity, Evolution, Departure and Captured are some of the best classic rock ever written.

After that, it went downhill IMHO

  • Infinity, Evolution, Departure... those are the 3 that stay in my Mp3 player. I really liked Greg and to have two juxaposed styles of singing was GREAT and rare.

  • If only they had been successful on the first 3 albums. Anyway, those are still great albums.

  • Seriously, how many non-musicians likes this kind of material? I'm a musician myself and I can say they played well but it's an awful song! In with Perry!

  • Great find on a Journey song from the pre-Perry days. By 1980, I would have guessed that they'd abandoned all pre-Perry songs in their setlist but it looks like I was wrong. To anyone who saw Journey in concert post 1980, did they perform music from any of the first 3 albums (sans Perry, that is).

  • This was the only pre Perry song that was played on this tour except for the Japan portion where "of a lifetime" was also played. Rolie wanted to play it one more time..his last performance with the band.

  • BTW: this tour was the last of the pre perry songs until the "generations" tour in 2005.

  • I wonder what these songs sounded like on the 2005 tour.

  • On the 2005 tour they performed several of the pre Perry songs, including this one with fireworks behind the stage that made it really cool. If they would have only released the vid from Dallas in 05 People would have been excited. They also played Mystery Mountain, Nickle & Dime and a couple of others. The '05 vid would also have the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders onstage that the end of Don't Stop Believin'

  • I wish I could go to an alternate universe and see what the band would have been like without Perry ever joining, good with and without him, but so different.

  • Neal Schon is the balls.

  • It's macho to slag Steve Perry but he was a fantastic vocalist---ulgy & creepy looking as sin, but phenomenal pipes.

  • Ugly and creepy looking???? Steve Perry was and still is a BABE!! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

  • Ugly and creepy? You must be a guy! Because anyone who was a girl growing up when Journey was Journey dreamed about Steve Perry at least once. I still do!

  • Well, my name is Bob...How many females do you know named Bob? Yes indeedy, Perry was quite ugly but I'm glad he still made it as a vocalist. Get a hold of their 1979 concerts in Japan---around April---and you'll hear Perry like never before---or since.

  • Saw them live in summer 79. Great, I mean better than studio. They lit up the sky. Sanatan played before them, I am sure that fired up his two prior members.

  • Santana, sorry, hard to type fast and I never usually look at what I typed.

  • thats right.. respect my last name!

  • This and Nickel and Dime from "Next" are my favorite Journey instrumentals

  • Awesome video. I'm crazy for the early Journey stuff. Is this avaiable anywhere on DVD or VHS even?

It's really weird to see Steve Smith so young (23 maybe?) He sounds great.

And nice to see some love for Mr. Dunbar, btw!

  • Ansley was still with the band when I saw them do this number at the Concord Pavillion. Guess who the opening act was... Montrose with their drummer Steve Smith. They hooked up shortly after Ansley left.

  • Agreed with Manzano: Smith IS a great drummer. It's all in each listener's perspective. I prefer Ansley on Journey tunes, the ones HE played on originally. Smith is great, as a jazz drummer, and on the Journey cuts he did.

  • Dude Steve Smith is one of the best drummers alive today. Dunbar was a rad drummer, but he has nothing on Steve Smith.

  • I disagree. Aynsley played with Zappa, one of the biggest megalomaniacs and perfectionists in the world. They just have different styles.

  • Right on the mark with your comment about the change to this mediocre drummer. Oh well, at least Perry doesn't get in the way of the "old" Journey on this tune.

  • "Mediocre drummer?" Are you kidding? Steve Smith is anything BUT. I rate him up there with Gadd and Colaiuta. Check out his current group Vital Information.

I also preferred early Journey over the Perry years but let's face it, financial and commercial success allowed them to continue doing what they love and when you think about it, many of their Perry-period songs have some cool musical riffs. The guitar intro of "Don't Stop Believing" is killer -- pop fluff it ain't! Schon's a monster player

  • Great vid. Too bad Ansley isn't on this track. At least there's no whining steve perry on this one. I saw Journey, in the beginning, opening up for Santana (the 5 members wore suits back then).
