Use a good nutritious substrate, like flourite/gravel mix. That is what I use 50/50 black aquarium gravel and red flourite. flourite comes in black as well, just as good. use the chemical "flourish" and iron supplement as directed on the instructions on the bottle. When you clean the aquarium, don't suck up all the gravel too deep with the siphon, just get what is on the surface or about 1/2 inch below. 4-5 inches of gravel, and most importantly good lighting. Reef tank lighting is what i use.
can you please please tell me how to take care of live plants, i currently have fake plants (look my video to see it} but i want to get live plants i think they look better and will help my tank on nitrate and ammonia. what do i need to keep live plants. please any info will be appreciate it. thank you
No, I actually use tap water with "prime" added before I pour it into the tank. I've used RO water in the past, and it is a better way to go, however I'm lucky and have pretty good tap water to start with. The Prime does the rest and I've had no problems for about five years now. Cardinal Tetras and Discus both do well in this water.
Not really, I enjoy the hobby and part of it is maintaining the fish tank. Once a month I do a water change and scrub the glass. Right now it has been about 5 weeks and the algae is getting thick. It will take me about 1 hour to clean it when it is this dirty. But 1 time per month for an hour is not too bad.
@devinsaudia4 They do need brackish water actually. Or a freshwater tank with a correct dosage of salt. Don't be a smart ass. It doesn't matter if it's living in freshwater. That doesn't make it healthy or happy.
I love your fish tank! I was wondering, if I were to keep a couple Rams in a 29 gallon with about 10 Cardinal Tetra, And a pair of Hatchets, would the Rams pick on my other fish?
I agree with jakebrown15, cichlids are easy to care for. I am a experienced fish keeper so I know what is easy or not. I just got some baby cichlids abd they are so funny. Blue, yellow, and a female. very social.
god these fish are a pain in the ass to care for! i spent 2,000 bucks on these (aquarium and supplies included) and they all drop dead in 2 months! if you have time to waste on these things lets say an hour a day by all means get them they are gorgous! but if you have a life DO NOT GET THESE stick to cichlids there easy to take care of have funny personalitys and are very preaty! iam probly going to get 30 downs for this comment but i dont care iam just speaking the truth!!!!!!!
I feed them once a night when I get home from work. I feed them Hikari frozen blood worms and Omega one vegi and protein flakes alternating nights. So during the day, they don't expect food. Or at night after I feed them. So they swim naturally.
The discus are $25 ea. The other fish are a few dollars each the aquarium setup with filter runs about $400 the stand and canopy is about $300 plants are about $5 each
@bbarron88 Tank is fabulous! At $25, what size are they, and how fast do grow to the size in this video? Plants look great too. Any special lighting or fertizlier? Are you using peat under your substrate for example? Thanks much. I have a 75 gallon to start up.
@dyamarick At $25 they're the size of a silver dollar. Some were $20 and some $30. It took about a year for that size. I use red flourite mixed with gravel for substrate. i use Flourish for fertilizer. No peat. I use Prime for the fish. That's it. They eat frozen blood worms, hikari brand.
that is the sooooooo awesome i have never seen somthing so cool check out my aquarium its called freshwater community fish the thumb nail is a pick of the tank with a pink flower on the bottom left hand corneer
Your bumblebees need brackish water, not fresh. Don't be fooled by their apparent health. Brackish fish are tolerant of different salinity levels, but freshwater is still very bad for them.
Luckily bumblebee gobies are small fish, so it shouldn't be too hard to set up a small brackish tank for them. If you have any questions, just ask.
While it is true that bumblebees are a brackish fish, they have been bred in captivity for close to a decade or longer and many have been raised in fresh water. THese specemin have been living for 13 months now. Ph is 6.8 but water is fairly hard. I also add aquarium salt after water changes. All fish are doing great.
I've had mine for less than 1 year and they've spawned about 5 times. Mine are kept in brackish.
Somehow I doubt that a decade of captive breeding-although that is a good thing-can change the way their bodies carry out osmoregularity. They could still be suffering the same detrimental effects that a wild caught fish would. Brackish fish are very tolerant of varying salinities (in general). Some can go years in fresh without showing its effects.
No, no spawning that I know of. I'm not sure about changes in osmoregularity, but I do know that these bumblebees have been able to adapt to freshwater conditions fairly well. They live about 3 years on average according to the breeder. I think that is pretty close to their natural life expectancy, right?? Maybe they're suffering some ill effects such as not spawning, or whatever, but for collector's purposes they seem fine...
Osmoregularity is how the cells keep the proper balance of salt and water internally. If there is too much or too little salt in the water, the cells must work to correct that problem internally. That takes energy, and leaves the immune system weak.
I'm not sure how long they live, but I'll keep track of mine.
Update: Mine spawned again today. That makes 6 times. Now if I can just raise the fry...
you have a really wonderful tank! i wish i could turn my tank into something like this.
