The right to be left alone, owning private property, and the right to do what a person wants as so long as it does violate the natural rights of others is the backbone of what freedom is. This is what gov't constantly seeks to destroy. Private property objectively leads to the expropriation of someone's labor in form of capital. @GeneralKlaas Remember competition is key is a true free market. When consumers have multiple choices to choose from, the businesses that are the most greedy will go out of business. Corporations seek gov't protection to keep competition out of the market place so therefor those monopolies can screw us over since we won't know better.

@residentzombie It's troubling how you haven't given a more serious research. Socialism revolves around worker control of the means of production, direct democracy, progressive society. Marx, you know, the guy who came up with socialism, said democracy is the only road to socialism. Just to clarify, Soviet/Eastern/Chinese socialism was NOTHING like actual socialism, it was rather a state capitalist dictatorship. You may want to take a look at Marx's and Enegel's works to get a clearer idea.

@GeneralKlaas Workers cannot control the means of production when they don't own the capital equipment to mass produce. Workers are owning the rights to their labor through wages. Socialism is government tyranny moron. That the only way it works. Look at the Soviets who had to point a gun at workers to work because noone wanted to. Because of this the Soviets produced very little and consumers had very little to consume.

Surplus value is constantly extracted from your labor. The USSR was a tyrannical state with no indusrty, social services or what not to start with. The Soviet economy was flawed since the beginning, it was a cyclical reproductive economy. About consumer goods, there weren't enough because of focus on heavy industry, not because people didn't work.

Workers labor with the tools provided by the business owner is what allows the worker to mass produce and thus enjoy a high standard of living because he is producing more than he can consume himself, giving that worker profit which the worker can then exchange in the market place for the labor of others. Think of the Amish. The Amish only produce for themselves and they do it 6 days a week, just to survive.

@residentzombie Of course, and what socialism seeks is to put these tools in the hands of the people. It is the tools who amplify someone's labor, not the person owning those tools. So giving these tools in the hands of the workers would make the capitalist class, a leeching class, useless. Workers lack the capital to acquire these machines because of the current economic relations, who grant the leeching class of capitalists super profits while only modest incomes to workers.

@GeneralKlaas One can only acquire the tools needed for mass production if they have self sacrificed and under consumed themselves to save capital over time need to acquire these tools or they have a proven history of repaying capital borrowed in which savings are finite, not unlimited. The business owners who bought and own these tools already sacrificed many things for a long period of time. Most workers do not want to do this.

@GeneralKlaas We all have capital. Not all of us sacrifice the same however. Business people want do and do sacrifice whereas most workers do not want to sacrifice. Last time I checked, the miners and other early producers of commodities don't want to wait to get paid until the consumer purchases the final product of the things which they produced in a store somewhere. Workers want to get paid NOW. Businessmen get paid later. Workers don't suffer losses when business fails, owners do.

@residentzombie First of all, there is a difference between personalproperty and private property. Personal property is like your house, car or television, it's yours, nobody will touch it. Private property is something like a workplace, it is used to extract value from workers by simply having a piece of paper saying this workplace belongs to somebody. Now, I am against the extraction of value for personal use by other people, it's simple appropriation of somebody else's labor

To imply such means you believe that a group of people have a higher claim to one's property than the owner of that property does. This is called collectivism and this is what spawned racism and tyranny. Think of the Borg from Star Trek. This is extreme collectivism, but collectivism none the less. Groups cannot exist without individuals and to say all individuals have the same goals and wants is foolish.

To know what rights are, many philosophers have studied this and most are as follows: freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom to do what a person wishes if it does not harm others (even if other people think it is bad), own property, make contracts with other people, and the right to one's life and defend it if threatened. Classic liberalism is the only philosophy (besides anarchism) that = this.

@residentzombie Marx differentiates personal and private property when talking about communism. Now, collectivism in a communist society is only applied to the relations between the economic assets. Of course we're all different and have different desires and communism's ultimate aim is to build a a classless, stateless system based on common ownership and free-access, superabundance and maximum freedom for individuals to develop their own capacities and talents.

In capitalism, the collective with benefits is the corporate/business owner who employs OTHER people to do the work he can't and makes a profit out of it by simply having a certificate that says it's his place. About corporations, they can really easily get monopoly over different wings of the market, that's why the government started intervening in it...
