but how do you call when ryan from the stting guard gwet a hold of the oponent out of an armdrag take the back the from the back bend to a side and gogo for a leglock wich ends in a 50/50???
Idk if i'm the only one who notices this. and i'm not being a dick. But i notice that its a SUPER common thing to see grapplers with some type of twitch. Kinda like a litte tick or tourette like habit they do. Like this Ryan Hall guy i notice blinks kinda hard at times. Its never anything super noticeable but its something i see A LOT in grapplers. Anyone else notice anything like that in grapplers
I found that if you have enough control on the knee (vacuum up that space), you don't even need to finish with a lock, they will tweak their own knees by flailing. It's horrible and something that I only work against people who know the leg game well.
To hell with this way of thinking (prejudice towards 50/50)! After seeing how one with knowledge of this position can downright retard the developement of the ignorant's (of the position) offense, from this position, I was enlightened. Cobrinha was beaten twice by Mendes, "50/50 expert"; and an accomplished BJJ brown belt in Albert Hughes was submitted by an "illegitimate brown belt/BJJpariah" in Brandon Quick.
I rolled with Brian "The Rubberband Man" today and we spent about 4 minutes in this position; I was the one to initiate the position. Now, I saw at times how it could be dangerous to my own knee; but, we both treated each other with respect and nobody got hurt. We each had 1-2 sweeps from the position; and, I felt him looking for heel hook opportunites as I did as well.
Now, am I going to be using the 50/50 position or buying DVDs on it? The answer is no. But, this is a position that a'int "illegitimate" nor "ugly" (as was guilty of prejudice) nor "stalling". I have to disagree with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu players and masters (ie. Velle, Cobrinha, Royler, Xande) to say this is a malpractice that doesn't evolve. It seems as though people have a prejudice for something they don't know very well - human nature.
@burtonjordaniii Stalling a points match is different than being submitted. Mendes will never be able to beat Cobrinha via submission or finish the match for that matter. Cobrinha was robbed at the world's.... When Mendes submits Cobrinha, I will retract this statement.
@veriklyte Don't matter. Ultimately, Mendes is a world champion that's beat Cobrinha 3 times! Fabio Gurgel and Alliance had numerous months to prepare to defeat this tactic.
Anyhow, it was a curious thing to see in Mendes and Hall's match. I couldn't help be think Ryan wanted a heel hook in their match; but, it is illegal in IBJJF. As for this position, I don't quite understand it; but, I respect and like it. For No Gi, it is even better 'cause heel hooks are legal in some tournaments.
Yeh, jiujitsu is simple, right? That's why talking about the technique is bad? Thanks for sharing your game with us. The talk is good. Ryan speaks clearly and poignantly, maybe even better than most of my College proffs!
im a white belt who trained for about a year and we never really drill lower body attacks so these is like an unknown world to me its really really intriging. ryan hall is known for his inverted guard and deadly deadly leg attacks so dont say he got bad tutorials. this guy caught multiple black belts with it because they underestimate him.
another thing i noticed is that a lot of traditional bjjers find lower body attack cheap. why is that? its all part of the submission game isnt it? 5/5
You're not going to really drill leg/lower body submissions until you're a purple belt. Leg submissions go from zero to injury very quickly and are considered too dangerous for lower belt ranks. That's why they're barred from competition.
@To0t i agree, its like when judo and jiu jitsu seperated because fighting on the ground is cheap. upper body and lower body submission will more than likely end up seperating into different arts as well.
@To0t Leglocks, especially at a high level are low percentage attacks. Your instructor also discourages you from practicing leg locks due to the higher risk of injury due to reduced knee and foot sensitivity. Also if your school is mma or self defense oriented, common wisdom is that going for a leglock is far too big of a risk when striking is involved.
@cloverbjj i agree. i always find the 50/50 is a position that just kinda happens on scrambles... The leg lock is always there. in gi competition usually only straight ankle locks are legal is part of the reason instructors discourage leglocks... it's pretty hard to avoid throwing a heel hook on people because 50/50 is a very rare drill and a lot of people don't recognize it and plainly hand you their foot.
@cloverbjj Leglocks are pretty scary because the amount of damage possible. I agree with the striking comment because if a guy grabs my foot I will try to kick his head off with the other one. I have practiced the techniques for escape, but I don't spar with heelhooks because it is so dangerous. Maybe guys who have been doing jujitsu regularly for 5 + years can do it safely, but I'd rather be safe than get surgery.
1. Anyone can get caught into leg locks so a lot of black belts do not like them.
2. Also to prevent injuries. A lot of people get hurt while doing leg locks, which is why white belts aren't allowed to do them until they learn control and an understanding of how easy it is to damage someone's ligaments from the locks.
@To0t They are simply dangerous to a white belt because they don't exactly hurt, they just get super tight and then your joint explodes. That's why white belts don't learn them at my school, because they might not know when to tap. I know a guy with a permanent knee brace because someone did a heel hook and blew his ACL.
does your dick hurt when you do jujitsu?

A lot of white belts don't learn lower body attacks, especially the heelhook, because they're just so dangerous.

u dont get to the bottom until youre blue. and even at blue youre held down to a minimum. when u get to purple youll get into alot more leg locks
