This was amazing to watch! The knotting behind the braid is new to me, and I love how you can catch the tails a bit more and snug up the braid. I have a few horses that have some rubbing issues--this will make it much easier to keep the braids tidy (as well as the cover to keep the braids from getting totally rubbed out). Great tutorial!!!
when I am done the standard braiding each peice into the yarn and I pull it through the top, my braid loops dont lay flat, are they supposed to ? or is it okat for them to be not laying flat like yours? If not, how do you fix that? Also my braids like to twist one way or another? Is there anyway of fixing that or is there something you think I might be doing that is causing this? :) thank you so much! your videos are amazing !!! :)
you need to start below the hairline and push your braid right to the edge of it. if you start the braid over the crest, it will never lay flat. if you subscribe, i'll let you know when my site is done. i'll have many hours of instruction and close up work.
When i braid I start at the very top. So i put my hands over the horses neck to make sure that i start braiding right at the hairline. They tend to not lay flat for some reason. Do you pull the section of mane down to the ground? I see that there is hair that is not braided right on the top.
Thanks so much for sharing your talent! I haven't done hunter braids in 11 years, checked out your video, & my braids came out better than I thought this morning!
@cowgurljb hey THANKS!!!! I'm working in texas at Still Forest Farm. i'm working on a braiding video and classes you can sign up for and watch braiding and ask questions and stuff. i'm thinking that will be later than sooner but i will have video subscriptions available to make your braids great.
After you pull the braid through how do you get the tail end to lay flat and pointing down? Mine wants to stick up. Otherwise I think I've got it but just can't get the tail coming in the right direction. Thanks!
pleasant person.) what would you recomend me doing? maybe just the braids the night before, and then the actual button part that morning? thanks for your help!
hey joe! i show my quarter horse at a lot of shows in the summer, and most of them are 4H shows at the local fair grounds. my delema is that i like to braid her mane for the shows, but i cannot do them at night because she likes to roll around all night long. (we call her miss restless.) i have to get my sister's horse ready for her in the morning as well as mine, so to do the braids in the morning i would have to get up at about 4 am, and that is just too early for me. if you cut the big "palm tree" out, you will find a big blunt "CHUNK" in your mane. it won't lay flat like the rest and won't have the same strength the other braids have because there won't be anything to help it stay in place. part of the reason i leave "tail ends" are to help the braid stay put.
@code3emt007 i got trampled and kicked in the head while working for Mikel Vulgamott at Horizon Farms. i have horrible migrains and my left elbow is thrashed, and while i CAN twist and braid it kills my arm to do so. if you FACEBOOK me you can see the picture of the back of my neck before the VET put stitches in my neck and they sent me home, telling me i was bleeding into my brain and i needed to call 911 from my house.....
Sorry to hear about your arm John, was it a braiding injury? (I was sent flying off my step stool when a horse spooked back in July and my elbow is still sore)
BTW do you braid dry?? It looks like it which is very surprising. I'm also surprised you charge only $35 for a mane, why's that?
Will you be braiding at Thermal? I'm thinking about going with a couple of other braiders from here in BC Canada. Thinking about buying a travel trailer down there to stay in as they're cheaper in the US.
Your braiding is awesome!! I was hoping you could help me out. I was wondering if you did any tail braiding or if you could possibly upload a video. I am a local braider in my area but I have trouble braiding tails. It starts out great but about half way down it gets too thick and i have too much hair in my fingers. It starts to get looser and its too thick to pinwheel. Hopefully you can help!!
Hey your braiding is awesome!! Im a local braider in my area and I need some help!! I was wondering if you could post a tail braiding video. I am having a bunch of trouble when braiding tails. It starts out great but towards the middle it gets too thick and I have too much hair that by the time i get done its way too thick to make a pinwheel and it doesnt look right. You seem like the perfect person to ask hopefully you can help!!!
@gallopgirl29 thanks, i planned to make more videos with my horse, Jack, but i got hurt. i've been rehabbing my arm for a couple of months and i'm in hopes i can use it to braid and make more tape again. that's a good suggestion, although with this style of braiding since you're twisting the hair together and you cut the bottom know it basically unravells itself. once you've mastered putting it together it comes out easily.
@gallopgirl29 Thankfully that's not part of a braider's job. If I had to stay up all night taking braids out instead of putting them in, I don't think I'd do it.
@Catchphrase1828 thanks for the kind words about my work. i usually braid down the hair 2/3rds the way down, or about 20 twists from right to left to right, etc..when i put in the yarn, i do 3 and ONLY 3 more twists because of how the yarn comes out of the braid. also, the trick is to put it in correctly so it comes out correctly. go back and look again and you'll see. make sure when you tie the knot that the end is tight and the knot gets closed well.
the video is really helpful . . . ive been braiding for a little over two yrs but havent been able to get rid of the bump that forms when i bring the string down, hopefully they go away now!
Your videos are great however i was looking forward to see how you pull yours up. I always have a problem getting the end into the crest. Also my horse has a terribly thick mane and I just cant thin it right. I always end up making it shorter and never thinner.
Hey John, I have a couple of questions for you. Is there a reason why you use a plum purple yarn on the black mane? Also, after you pulled the tension from the yarn and right before you tie the tail to the braid, how are you doing that knot? You are crossing then crossing again, I noticed you put your finger in the loop then pulled? Please let me know :)
@danyoung43 the knot at the end is a single half hitch with both pieces. they have to be pulled evenly so there isn't more pressure on one than the other. i latch hook the yarn through the top of the mane. criss cross underneath, double twist (surgeon's knot) on top to press the braid down. double twist underneath to hold the braid closed and to give the turn point for the tail end, then simple knot to yank the tail to the back of the braid. surgeon's knot again to secure
Thanks for this video! Could you please do another from start to finish on one braid? This (you) is the best info I have been able to find on the entire internet! Thanks for your professionalism and most beautiful braiding job!!
you want to use a 4-plait acrylic yarn if you can get it. "simply soft" by "Caron Yarn" if you can get it. the mane is about five to five and a half inches from the underside of the crest (where it grows out of the mane)
They look amazing but here in the UK we do like 9 or 11 (always an odd number) of plaits (braids) down the neck and we roll ours up to make little balls not fold them flat then we do a french plait in the forelock for luck. If i turned up to a show or to go hunting with 30 little ones I would be laughed back onto my lorry! But doing 11 big ones is a saviour on early show mornings cause i can have them in and done in 10 mins! But this is still very impressive!

I'm an experienced braider and there's nothing wrong with my braids but I'd like to be able to make the tail disappear like you do.

If you could explain it to me I'd really appreciate it.

Your braids are GOREGOUS.
I love this video too, but I just get confused when you are twisting the yarn, then pulling it.
How many times do you 'twist' the yarn, and what do you mean by criss-crossing and how you manage to tie the tail to the braid and all that.
The main thing that has me confused, is just how many times you twist/criss-cross the yarn.
Just the part oh how you make the braid come together is what confuses me.
[Sorry, lot's of questions. I can't explain myself.]
