What wonderful independent fingers ... each with it's own strength, so sensitive. Not to mention his musicianship, knowledge, and taste. So beautiful.
HE PLAYS THIS LIKE HE IS SINGING THE WORDS! I love his work. Hersch has produced a beautiful body of work over the years. He certainly justifies the space he occupies. Long life Fred!!!
He's been dealing with a lot of shit, aids related lately. A man this talented doesn't need to step out before he has given us everything he's got. That wouldn't be fucking unfair. Get better you son of a bitch!
@THeEraSerr It's mostly called impressionistic jazz or jazz influenced by impressionism. Personally, I just don't care what people call his way of playing - it's in a world of its own. I've heard him live in Vienna with Nico Gori, and it was a highly intense experience, very special.
Passion flower, Freds tribute to Strayhorn is still one of my alltime favorite recordings. This version of Cole Porters ingenious composition is sublime.
I read the NY Times article too and went to this video for a quick check. But I could not leave it. I was compelled to take a journey to my soul. Fred Hersch is definitely on my map of the inner self.
I read an article about Fred Hersch in the New York Times Magazine this morning (1.31.10) and although I've been a jazz fan for 50 years I hadn't heard of him. What a great find! Now I'm looking forward to a new player and his music! Wow!
I Found Fred Hersch , sometime ago , in a record with bill frisell, and it sounds great, then i started to learn more about Fred, and he is a great artist, and human being, that is more important,
Fred has the distinctive touch that describes his emotions, thoughts and ideas. The harmony is so deep, thick and expansive. He is he closest thing to the great Bill Evans but with his own stamp to the music.
I wonderful pianist that I have the utmost respect for as an artist as a man. He reflects a person with a big expansive soul that travels to magical places in the heart.

So destinctive. You can tell it's Fred - and no one else. I love his rendition of "The Peacocks" which has a full 3 minute introduction. One of the greats, along with Dave Grusin and Pete Jolly.
Awesome! I'm going to see him here at West Chester University in February
