I'm glad I found this; it took me a while and I've never been able to find the movie to watch it. I only watched part of a it a couple of times when I had cable in the mid 90s. I loved this movie, and yeah I guess what kind of makes it good is the darker tone.
I loved the way the "kids" in this movie all look about 30 ha ha! Except Christine Taylor (Mrs Ben Stiller). She looks like a high schooler. The rest of them look like they are about to enter a mid-life crisis.
Another great flick that was cheesy but had great action. Patrick KilPatrick was the best part of the flim making Martin Kove's character from the Karate Kid seem normel compare to Patrick's in Showdown with his quotes they were so cheesy and funny as Denard's from American Kickboxer 1.
i remember this shit i love 90s karate movies thats when back then every kid I knew wanted be in karate class because of movies wit teenagers and kids doing martial arts in movies.
I like the main guys homeboy "ohhhh karate janitor..." lol
Hell yeah, It was either take karate or be a ninja. '80s action fucking ruled, then and now. When blowing shit up and a pair of Ray-ban aviators went hand in hand.
I loved this movie!!! It's just as good as the Karate Kid. The only reason it didn't get the acclaim of the Karate Kid is because it wasn't as commercial...and it was a darker film.
Nice! Yeah it really is a cool movie with some actually decent moves. One thing I can't stand are phonies with 3 months of "training" trying to make me believe they can pull this off.

I saw this movie back in 1995-1996. It's funny, to think roughly 15 years later, Never Back Down comes out and it's pretty much the same story.

I've still got this movie recorded on tape from TBS years ago when it came on late at night. I thought it was a terrific kickboxing flick!

There was a short-lived UK DVD which was released last year, but other than that, it looks like nothing but scarce former VHS rentals out there.
