I'm pretty sure the piano bench is bogus... no way it was around to be signed by Elzie Segar (who died in 1944) just for a start!

OK, then a better way to say it would be "I could tell it was bogus even before it was smashed." What I wonder is if there is a real bench it was based on, or if it was totally made up. (P.S.: Actually I think Segar died in 1938, *at* 44.)
