Wooden and Scully were neighbors when Vin moved to LA in 1958. There is a YT clip where Vin describes his first meeting with Coach Wooden. From the until his death, they were great friends.
@MickeyMorandini1 Vin has often said he is a practicing Roman Catholic. He says his religion has helped him cope with his first wife's sudden death in 1972 and his son's death in a helicopter crash in the 1980's.
Wooden didn't win until his 17th year at UCLA after the infamous booster Sam Gilbert began to purchase for the elite high school players in the country.
@rayjr62 - John Wooden was so much a part of my growing up. I'm a huge UCLA fan. Even though I'm a Giants fan, Vin was also a part of my childhood too. Growing up, I remember my dad watching Dodger games and Vin was so much part of those games. We went to the 1974 World Series against the A's ... being later in life I can't stand the A's. I guess I'm UCLA Royal Blue and as former San Franciscan, I love my Giants. But as an Angelino, I still have some Dodger blue in my heart.
@LACOFD121 Hold the phone, it was just announced that Vin WILL be back for the 2012 season. Truly the most epic career of any radio/TV announcer ever.
There's not a word in the dictionary to describe Vin. Saying he's a genius is just a huge understatement. He's pretty much the only person who I could look up to now that John Wooden is gone. Hope he stays with us for many, many more years.
What a fucking stud. Skully, you are the man. Wooden, I am a 24 year old kid living in LA who read your book at the age of 19. It changed everything about my life.
@dresnap5344 not only Shakespeare, Vin can also quote Latin. Once when a famous player stuck out in a critical situation, Vin said "Sic transit gloria". Which means "Thus goes glory".
Vin is amazing. He obviously did this extemporaneously, no script, and...he fit it in in exactly under a minute - the length of one commercial. No stammering, no pausing. What a magician.
Vin never fails to find the right words. Appropriate too because, with the possible exception of Tommy Lasorda, there is no one person left alive today who would be missed as much by people in Los Angeles as Vin one day will be.
@LavaLampBlob I was thinking about this too. I think the LA sports figures that are over 60 who are loved whole heartedly are now down to Scully, Lasorda and Jerry West.
I don't care how old he is, how many years go by... I don't even care that I'm a huge Mets fan living in the LA area-
I REFUSE to believe Vin Scully will ever die... I just can't think of it... somehow, I can't imagine a warm summer without the words "It's tiiiimmme for Dodger Baseball! Hello again, everbody, and a pleasant good evening to you, wherever you may be..."
In a just world, Vin Scully would NEVER have to leave the warm summer days at the ballpark- or us...
I was at the game tonight and they showed this in the 6th inning on the jumbotron in Left Field. On the scoreboard in right field, in big letters it read "John Wooden 1910-2010".
