For one, you can fill up at shell yet still put BP refined gas in your car. Just because a station is branded BP or Shell, doesn't mean that it is what you are putting in your tan(minus the premiums). Second have fun doing without plastics or anything else made from the chemicals that come from oil. Have fun boycotting pretty much everything modern americans use!! Until you do that, your words are just that WORDS!
If you really care about the Lake, do the the research. Look at the surrounding Steel Mills. But I guess boycotting steel mills doesn't sound as "hip" as boycotting "big bad oil". These politicians can care less about polluting the lake. They care about getting votes! Battling BP makes they sound like they care about the environment. Yet they drive their Yukons ect and continue to support companies that ARE destroying the lake. If you wanna boycott BP, you have to boycott a lot more than BP gas
obv you people know nothing about this issue. the amounts he give sound horrible, yet it still WAY under the legal limits allowed by the EPA. The reason they were given permission to dump more is because they are building a new refinery which will about double what they refine today. How bout the millions they have donated to Purdue to help find ways to lower the releases into the lake?
BP Increases Toxic Sludge Dumping into Lake Michigan
BP will now be allowed to dump an average of 1,584 pounds of ammonia and 4,925 pounds of sludge mixed with 21 million gallons of contaminated wastewater into Lake Michigan EVERY DAY. An immediate boycott of BP is necessary.
In the United States, BP markets their products and services under five name brands so if you don't agree with what they are doing, don't give them any of your money!
I believe the proposal to allow increased dumping of ammonia and toxic sludge into Lake Michigan from British Petroleum's oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana is unconscionable. Certainly a company that claims to be "Beyond Petroleum" can also be beyond polluting our waters.
Please halt progress on this proposal now and find a way to deal with the waste this plant produces other than dumping more of it into Lake Michigan.

Do the math:
1584 pounds of ammonia per day multiplied by 365 days equals 578,160 pounds per year, and 5,781,600lbs in the next decade.
4925 pounds of toxic sludge multiplied by 365 days equals 1,797,625 pounds per year, or 17,976,250 pounds over the next 10 years.
At 21 million gallons of contamintated water per day, they will pollute 76,650,000,000 gallons of fresh water in the next ten years.
