  • What i love about this video is Chaka is one of the few legendary Black female singers who didn't grow up singing gospel in church, as she grew up Catholic & then turned to yuroba in her teens when she got her name. Goes to show that blk people have soul naturally!

  • Billy Preston on the organ!

  • While I'm on this tedious journey!

  • Wow all the greatest singers seemed to start in the church

  • Great video. Chaka was about to "Go In" at the end!!

  • Chaka sounds like a trumpet.

  • @chordsofcolor ..lol i've said the same thing for years, yes her voice is like a trumpet.. I've heard her sing live at a park in Atlanta and i could swear that God was sounding his trumpets for the end of the world..lol Her voice has Power

  • I have never seen errbodi in the choir stand with mircophone ... umm, we need a building fund at my church!!! lolz ... I love how Chaka did this .... feels good to hear some good foot stomping muziq

  • nice video

  • A riffs does not make you a great singer!!!! Thats what most people who listen to gospel tend to forget. there isn't a singer alive who can match CHAKA when she's in the zone! and though I can say this performance isn't the most brilliant performance it's definitely a good one. Chaka can, have and will sing circles around the best of them!!!!!!!!!! I've seen it time & time again. LISTEN TO CHAKA KHAN's "BEP BOP MEDLEY" and then come back to the table.

  • Billy and Chaka!!!! It just doesn't get any better.

  • I like the rendition of the chorus.

  • She worked that song! I could have had her sing the whole song the way she did in the opening and it would have been fine with me. I remember this show. I used to love to watch it. Get that organ Billy.

  • Walk with me JESUS!!! Thanks for loving me so much and never, ever giving up on me. I trust in YOU and always will. THANK YOU, GOD!!!!!

  • @iluvmyboba amen!

  • Sang it; Chaka sho' nuff went to church.

  • She tore this song up.

  • Talk about star studded! :13 the late Billy Preston. 1:16 the shorter lady front row near the middle is Rose Stone of Sly and The Family Stone and 2nd from the right is Rose's daughter Lisa .

  • she wiped the tears, sweat & blood from the lord of amen

  • That's what we call good singing in rhe black church. She has perfect pitch and screams in key...since you want to call it screaming.

  • i like when she sings alto better

  • excel she started in church and jamed that song as the lord gave her god bless

  • Chaka Khan started singing in church? WHAT A CLICHE? Who told you that?

  • @MadamePaigeTurner Chaka isnt really from the Church...her roots are in jazz and rock...so it impresses me how she still sings gospel

  • its not hard to sing any genre.. but i do feel u..

  • @MsVarrie85 it is hard to sing any genre of music...very hard. Any true singer knows that.

  • If you all don't repent you all will go to the lake of FIRE ONE day when you die. You are playing with the LORD. The LORD is a CONSUMING FIRE. Get right with GOD! While you still have time iin THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.

  • Keep your words behind your teeth and stop pushing YOUR beliefs upon others. DO NOT throw stones from a glass trailer house.

  • @temoc76 Why do all the wack jobs flock to the Chaka channel?!!! forgive them Father 4 they know not what they do!!!

  • @BNNYWVH1

    Are you judging?

Judge not lest ye be judged. That's the word also.

  • She is the Truth!

  • Glorifies God with the gifts he gave her!

  • hey that's billy preston!!! rip!!

  • SANG CHAKA!!!!

  • and i apologize for being personal earlier

  • Chakas not near the ridiculous over singer that Patti is. but shes also not the craftsman that Aretha is. Arethas vocals work b/c they are rooted in the authentic interpretation of the style shes singing. well, when shes doing a good job that is. her most recent years, not so much, but you know that.

Chaka for me is just uninspired. this song here doesnt have a soulful feel. she doesnt mean what shes singing. she just likes to use her voice, but is very rarely making an emotional investment

  • nobody can become an exact copy of an Aretha because she's incomparable,,thats why Chaka is so respected for defying the laws of singing,,more like modernizing it..how can anyone become so prominent in the industry considering they're still in the era of Aretha? only the extraordinary like Chaka can do it.

  • ok, im cool with that

  • Comment removed

  • the rawness and dynamics of Chaka is something never heard of from the soulful Aretha..its like Chaka took off from where Aretha has left..not necessarily better but just great and different in her own style..i must say when i first heard Chaka,,i find her style quite unconventional and abit hard to digest,,but after few listens,,her style grew on me and has never left since..quite an impact i must say..only tremendous musicianship can affect me that way and both Aretha and Chaka has done it.

  • i respect Chakas ability and accomplishments. shes held her audience for all these years. however, non-Chaka fans are hardly a minority. shes not a superstar. she doesnt headline tours and sell-out the biggest venues. nor does she top charts. the Chaka-obsessed is the minority.

shes a good singer. but shes not a brilliant one. her timing, her creativity, her lines and use of melisma, and her "improvisation" are all vastly overrated by her fans.

and this performance completely lacks true soul

  • that's your own way of view....of course she's not a michael jackson!!ok?she is a respected person and considered as a legend, and influenced hundreds of new-born artists....apart from that is the sheer truth(like or not),it is incredibly foolish to rate those vocal legends to your own taste!!!you dont like it,just dont comment it!!hope you reach her level as a musician and then judge her abilities..she is not the best singer in the world just because no one does....

  • are you saying that everyone in the world likes every singer and song ever made?

of course you have tastes, and thats how you choose what you like.

but apart from that, is the truth (like it or not) about a persons ability, and that is what im talking about. not how much i like it. but specifically how well a singer executes a genre or song. and Chaka does not give fully realized authentic versions of jazz or gospel.

and if you dont want to read comments, dont reply to them.

  • what is true authenticity? music is something "made up".back in the mozart era, there's no such thing as jazz."soul",is an expressive type of singing,"made up" from different components of previous influences.music is passion.why do you have to be so "mechanical" about it..Chaka has perfected her own "fusion" style,,which has widely influenced new generation of singers.Quincy Jones, music mogul, crowned Chaka as "America's premier female vocalist" because of her diverse, organic approach in singing.

  • Chaka gave contemporary versions of them..its not necessary to cover the oldskool swing jazz in order to fully realize authentic jazz...do you really think Chaka can't do that?? she can but she has her "own" interpretations and prefers to use it...nevertheless jazz giants like Corea and Hancock gave Chaka her credentials in jazz..credible jazz critiques also said Chaka is the only artist outside jazz with credible jazz interpretation/improvisation skills..

  • yeah that's right...as for gospel there insnt actually a technique for singing...i totslly think tha as a powerhouse, chaka could easily perform anthems like that...and final and most crucial...gospel music means black music from its genes...

  • there is not a vocal technique for singing gospel. but there is certainly music structures that make it a genre. it has to do with the tonal scale used for most gospel, which is a blues scale in major keys. other hallmarks include call-and-response, a 1-2 1-2 kind of rhythm, choir and soloist, quartets, going from slow to really fast, broad chords.

yes, all of this is express Christian belief. but its a musical genre. and neither Chakas sound, nor phrasing shows any true gift for it

  • get yourself a little loose.....dont just spend time to makes us clear how all genres go...the point is if you liked this video or not...like it? comment it.you dont like it?leave your thoughts and dont try to teach us music...music cannot be taught.despite the fact i replied to you and paddy no one would do...

  • please

i really dont need advice from you

    thanks

    that is all

  • as a rule i dont respond to you, b/c there is no discussion when someone has an obsession.

however i will clarify one point that i didnt state clearly enough.

i do not claim, nor have i ever, that Chaka was incapable. her voice and ear would of course allow her to do whatever any number of musical styles would require. my point is that she doesnt. the same is true of whitney, and patti. they can sing great, but most of the time are simply indulging themselves vocally, hollering for its own sake

  • first you say i have an obsession and you are the whole time to comment, critisizing well known singers not just chaka, but patti, whitney(not so much)...you have a point that no one can sing all genres.....but YOU CANT SAY THAT THOSE LADIES LACK SERIOUS SOUL....WHEN ALL THOSE BUNCH OF LADIES ACHIEVED STH BECAUSE THEY WAILED SERIOUS SOUL....to me and any listener to music ,what makes an artist is his/her talent, passion and then music education..

  • i wasnt talking to you

the "osbession" comment is to paddey, who has a habit of giving me 10 replies to 1.

  • please,,i only gave you 1 reply to each of your comments here.

  • if Chaka's indulging herself with hollerin then what do you suppose to call Aretha's style with her continuous high belts, runs n squalls in her singing?? isnt that "indulgence" too??? which book taught that runs n squalls are an integral part of music?? legends like these have the rights to indulge themselves and have their own interpretation..whether you liked it or not is just a matter of taste..

  • its about a musical theme. you establish it and resolve it. its about where in the measure you hit the beat. down-beat, back beat etc. Arethas riffs are very rooted in gospel, but she uses them to go through the chord progressions and land in just the right spot at the right time to resolve the improv. Mariah uses chromatics brilliantly. Patti and Whitney just bellow for its own sake. its not about taste, its about whether the person is using their stylistic tool effectively and properly

  • actually,,i really understand everything you said..thats what i love about Aretha too..she's crazy rooted in her interpretation,,especially gospel and soul music..Aretha's absolutely BRILLIANT,,a master at her own repertoires..but as great as she is,, for me Aretha has her limits too,,especially when it comes to the more contemporary stuffs..as we know music changes with time..thats why Chaka had the industry on its ears when she emerged in the scene...she has a very unconventional approach...

  • yes i certainly agree.

Arethas gift doesnt extend to ballads or R&B

her early 60s columbia music where they tried to make her Streisand or Ella showed she had to be more rhythmic, not legato, in order to be effective. then when she did R&B in the 80s and 90s, it just wasnt the best.

thats why I have always considered Ella Fitzgerald to be the all-time best. she was as phenomenal on rhythm tunes as she was on ballads. and better than everyone else in both. she just didnt have Arethas voice

  • yeah,,one must become creative in order to be effective and outstanding..thats what both Aretha and Chaka did in their respective eras..to me,,whats most appealing about Whitney is her tone and embellishment skills..but interpretive wise,,thats where she lacks..Mariah uses chromatics brilliantly in her recordings but she often lacks it "live"..to me only Aretha and Chaka are outstanding, colorful and dynamic(in their own unique ways) at "live" interpretations..and the great Ella too!

  • I've got silly question. What is chromatics?

  • chromatic scales are scales that are done in half step increments.....Example: F Fsharp, C Csharp, A Asharp and so on......

  • F, F#, C?

    maybe F, F#, G, G#, A, A#

  • @zanohoriamazo Sir...IF you would take the time to READ w/understanding, you would see that I was giving examples incrementally... ALL of them were quite accurate...

  • betty carter would disagree and miles davis i might add

  • some great things can be an acquired taste,,that grows on you with time..Chaka's fans are hardly a minority..they are all over the world..yes she's not a superstar but neither is Aretha..Michael Jackson is a definition of a superstar..as much as "one" would say Aretha's interpretation as the core center of everything,,,watch again her interpretation of "i dreamed a dream" and see how the majority disagrees with her..a very painful,,hard to listen to rendition that is..

  • you can type some paragraphs..LOL...i know ill be too lazy to type all that LOL

  • Check out her "I Want" video then tell me she lacks timing and creativity. another thing improv is not jus a bunch of runs which is what ree tends to do alot of. improv deals with phrasing and changing up tempo which if you listened to chaka you would know she's a master at. She also changes the style in which she sings her signature songs. she'l sing funk versions, jazz, rock, fusion, soul, etc. i personally nevr thought ree was very creative eigther but i don go bashing her skills.

  • EXACTLY!!!!! in the words of Don Cornelius "she's a genius in the area of vocal improvisation"

  • your so funny !!!!

  • oh, a chaka person

    forget it

  • thank god that you and a few others having those opinions are minority..thats all i have to say!!i wont even try to persuade you because you are so pathetic...a great knowledge of music means that you have certain respect for people that done sth in music industry.obviously you are only a professional stubborn...

  • ok

music is not just about passion. yes passion is a compelling element in a performer, but its hardly the center. music is sonic first. you can have a passionless whispered vocal thats mesmerizing, ie Billie Holiday. and then theres all of classical music which is at times passionate, like opera. but a great deal of it is about taste, not emoting.

music is how you manipulate sound. the music industry is about making a profit from how people react to that sound.

  • you are no god to determine whats "passion" or not...feelings can be expressed in many ways,,,some are muted and some are loud...what mess are you talking about my friend.

  • Chaka is one of the greatest singers around.Billy is the best keyboardist I have heard in my life.

  • the blue angel 28 ye double minded you went from complimenting her to condemning her God is not the author of confusing but SATAN is he does not want peace only hatred discord torment envy jealousy strife and your soul its up to you JESUS or SATAN dont hate participate

  • of for the love of Elvis!

    HA HA HA HA HA!

  • Baby quit letting these ridiculous idiots on here drive you.Chaka doesn't have to prove anything her work speaks for itself-That's why she's the singer most admired & revered by her peers in the music industry. Some people are just lonely & want attention bless their poor little souls!

  • Somebodi hatin. Chake tore this up. She has a style all her own. A different style. She puts a real twist on it, that the other greats right now lack!

  • she cant really do it

i mean her voice is great, but this isnt a very impressive interpretation

she doesnt really know how to sing gospel. rhythmically very uncreative and straightforward. and the riffs arent much

  • for someone who wasn't raised with gospel upbringing,,she did great in her own style..i can hear some jazziness in her phrasings..we already have too many typical "riffs" singers..Chaka is like a breath of fresh air in the arena of gospel..talking about putting your own stamp on it.

  • I know you are not a fan of hers and so I'm surprised that you have to go out of your way to watch her video and even comment on it.. And you don't like Chaka singing gospel too. If I'm not mistaken, you also said that Chaka isn't also great in Jazz. I will not argue with you because you're entitled to your opinion but I see how you are not that credible basing on this statement.

  • im afraid you are mistaken

you dont have any higher level music education. you arent a music professional. and based on your tastes, you dont have any great musical instincts. i am more than capable of telling you exactly why Chaka isnt a great gospel or jazz singer. i dont think you can do the opposite.

you have no position from which to judge anyone credibility, especially not mine. passion does not an authority make

  • Who told you about me not having higher level music education. Not only did I study music but voice as well. I didn't judge your credibility against mine but against those credible people in the music industry who have praise Chaka's Jazz skills. May I just ask, do you think Aretha is better than Chaka in Jazz?

  • BTW, I'm also a musician.. Based on my tastes, I don't have great musical instincts? Well let me tell you, I may prefer Chaka but I also like Aretha who I acknowledge as the real Queen of Soul and one of Chaka's mentor.. Yeah her voice may have changed now but in her prime she had the ideal soul singer's voice. I do not deny that and her genius just because I prefer Chaka. In fact I've always liked Aretha. I'm sure those who've said that Chaka is great in Jazz have more credibility than you!

  • the whole music industry is based on passion and then everything else, that has less importance....as for gospel music who are you to judge different singing styles??gospel music is especially for people and singers who live the meanings that this kind of music has to offer.its incredibly rediculous to underrate chaka,a black woman who is a vocal powerhouse!!bear in mind that this category of music is only sung by artists that have those vocal abilities...

  • your entire statement is fundamentally flawed.

you dont have a true grasp of what you are trying to speak on.

    who am I to judge?

    The Blue Angel, thats who

  • but who's "the blue angel"

  • as much as you like to self indulge,,,unfortunately this is "youtube",,where an opinion,,is just an opinion..

  • can you sing ????

  • When are our brothas gonna stop acting like monkeys? Everything isn't joke. Its not needed any longer.

  • R.I.P. Billy Preston

  • WHAT Billy Preston died? I didn't know that. You learn something new everyday.

  • @shellshockkd12 Billy Preston Died? When?

  • @girlmusician24 I think 4 or 5 years ago!

  • CHAKA IS A BEAST YO! WOOOOOOOO!

  • she should have stayed with the gospel cause she has a very good gospel voice ans she can put out some good quality notes

  • a very nice rendition she did it very well im pleased

  • sang it Chaka !!!

  • now if anyone knows what choir this is singing could you please leave a comment on my page it would do me real great

  • I miss this show...sing it sista

  • oh yes i miss it so much but it comes on tv one at 6 in the mornin of sundays only two episodes come on and i record them lol

  • she shojuld have stayedin church

  • Amen! Gospel music, is the first official genre of music. Of course music started in Africa, where the humanity began, in different sounds. But AMERICAN music got ALL of it's sounds from Gospel music. Neo-Soul borrows from low, soft melodic tones; Rock was born off of loud, powerful and strong growls and yells; and R&B pulls from the beat...the undercurrent rhythmn that forces your body to react in a way that makes you dance. ALL music comes from gospel. Gospel IS the beginning of music.

  • This is silly. Have you ever heard traditional African music??

The truth is that gospel, soul,RnB etc. wouldn't appear if the cultures didn't meet

  • Jazz, R&B, Folk, Country, Rock N' Roll & reggae are all genres of music which borrowed considerably from the sounds of black American gospel music. Many of the rhythms, lics, riffs, runs and other musical elements found in these genres of American music clearly have gospel roots.

  • I Miss This TV Show Good News!!!

  • Who were Chaka's musical influences? I guarantee they were singers who came from gospel roots. Her sounds is and has always been a gospel sound. Give credit to whom credit is due. This is not a myth. It's a fact...

  • Chaka's got influences from diverse genres..gospel happened to be one of them, quite a late entry in her career..

  • wow really? that's surprising because normally with singers, it's gospel first and then the other genres. That's interesting to know. Thanks for that info.

  • just an additional info fer u, Chaka's main influence is jazz..interesting huh

  • believe it or not, Chaka is originally catholic. She graduated from St. Sabina grammar school in Chicago. St. Sabina is of coarse Fr. Michael Phleger; a white priest with black flair who has been pastor for over 25yrs. Chaka has done many benefits for St. Sabina. I went to a catholic school in Englewoodstraight down Racine ave from St. Sabina. EVERY catholic school in the Englewood area was closed by the Chicago archdosis except St. Sabina. Thanks to Chaka for her advocasy in keeping it open!

  • Actually as PO says they are diverse:Billie,Sarah,Carmen,Janis Joplin,Stevie,Dizzy,& host of other jazz greats. She's gleaned something from all of the afforementioned, but Aretha is where she got her passionate fiery gospel chops!@ 11 she sang with the Crystalettes @ was called "Lil Aretha"!They use to compete in all the Chicago area talent shows & none other than the heavilly gospel influenced "The Emotions"were their biggest rivals.I believe they had a big influence on shaping her style also.

  • For Chaka not to come from traditional "Black Church" roots she came on the scene with the most "gospelesque" since Aretha & Mahalia!& with all the fiery passion, attitude, control,& power that she infuses into anything she sings she debunks the theory you have to come from a gospel background to be a good singer. Well the word gospel means "Good News" & she is that!

  • Yes. Thanks for replying on this. It reminds me how good it is. I'm going to bump it up on my favorites list so there is a better chance of other people viewing it.

  • This is so good. I was unfamiliar with Chaka Khan. Knew a little of her as a kid growing up since she was very popular in the '70's. But now YouTube is bringing everything to light.

  • And your ears will never be the same! Also your bar of what is great music & great vocalizing will be raised immensely!

  • Does anyone know the man name in the green at the top corner. And also the gentlmen who look like James Moore? It would do great assistance!

  • Chaka Khan can sing anything...

so can Yvette marie Stevens :-)

  • I remember when this aired. I was glued to the television. This show had some good songs on it even though half of them was not singing! LOL

  • The Choir members skirts need to be longer, LOLLOLOLOLOL!!!!

  • The Choir members skirts need to be longer, LOLLOLOLOLOL!!!!

  • why does everyone in the choir have mic?

  • I never knew Chaka sung gospel

  • Yes a lot of the R&B singers started out in Gospel before switching. Singers like Whitney Houston, Jennifer Hudson, Patti Labell, Anita Baker, Areatha Franklin, Bettie Right, and a lot of others. Chaka Khan which isn't her real name is suppose to be returning back to Gospel.

  • Actually, Chaka is one of the few black singers from her era who did not come out of the church. She's just the most versitile singers in history.

  • this ain't true. Chaka's background is not gospel, and she's not from the church. If Chaka does do a gospel album, it won't be a return, it will be a new venture.

  • Right! She came from a Jazz, Rock and Classical house.

  • So what does that tell you? She has the best voice for gospel out there & it's infused with influences of other genres.ctually Chaka does come from the "church".The "Catholic Church"& was singing "Ave Maria" instead of "What A friend We Have In Jesus".You make the poor woman sound is if she came off the streets, straight out the honky tonks.

  • He walked with you Mama!

  • I remember this Show "Good News"

  • Does anyone know the man name in the green at the top corner. And also the gentlmen who look like James Moore? It would do great assistance!

  • She tore that up song up with her versatile anointance from God. A gospel record is being awaited by us her admires, fans and fellow industry friends.

  • YES!

  • 01-01-2008 Yessss What A Sweet Clip to See for this New Year Every One Stay Blessed Thanks 4 Posting

  • This is one of my favourite gospel song...hearing it through Chaka's voice is amazing! And don't forget Mr Preston at the piano!

  • I loved this show! Does anyone have the part of this episode where the Rev. had too much coffee and started singing "I'm a soldier" Too funny. Great show for the entire family.

  • Thanks for putting this video back up, CLASSIC!

  • Chaka and Billy. 2 of the best. Chaka another selection for a gospel album of yours. You got it on the gospel and some of your gospel songs are truly a blessing in troubled times. Keep going with it.

  • she can sing but y everybody gotta hava mic
