That's usually how it was back then on JEOPARDY!, the winner got to KEEP the money they won and come back to play again, the 2nd place finisher would get something like a nice vacation trip or entertainment system, and the 3rd place finisher would get something like a new chair or watch.

Today on JEOPARDY!, The winner, as always, keeps the money they win and comes back to play again, the 2nd place finisher gets $2,000 and the 3rd place finisher gets $1,000.

Jeopardy in the 80's had much more simple answers and clues than it does today. And categories were more repetitive between episodes.

I know it's entertainment, and I've seen Mama and the Harpers on Family Feud too. Vicki Lawrence is very funny playing Mama. All I'm saying is take a lesson when watching and laughing this comedy.

Thelma gives us a good example of what you could do on other exciting game shows. Not on Jeopardy though. Contestents never spend too much time describing themselves or acting out or even reacting to a big prize at the end of the show. Contestants can do that on Wheel of Fortune or The Price is Right. Do this and you could be disqualified on Jeopardy. Don't mess this Alex either. Good sportsmanship is always a must.

@sommerssmith Also there are more enthusiastic contestants on Deal or No Deal and Minute to Win It which have both been very successful prime time game shows on NBC. Neither show has any trivia elements. Deal is pure luck and Minute is physical skill. Both shows offer a top prize of $1,000,000 and feature very excited contestants unlike Jeopardy! and much more enthusiasm than The Price Is Right. Wheel of Fortune doesn't have very much enthusiasm.
