These are using Newtonian physics, aren't they? If you want to do more advanced flocking you can use boids.
Also, you might want to have each particle be a mesh, so it looks more like a flock of animals.

huh, how did you make the object block the spotlight halo?

You need to use a shadow buffered spotlight instead of rayshaded. once you switch to shadow buffer all the options to do that appear.
