man i wish my zebra finche stays on my finger like tat...when i try it just flys away then i have to go catch it...but i guess its like that bc i only got it for a few days...lol...but it would be so cool to be able to have the finch sit on my fingers...
@fishpimp100 I have never heard of an adult zebra finch that was tamed. Some other finches, like gouldian finch, Erythrura/Chloebia gouldiae are easier to tame. I know two girls who have tamed their gouldians rather easily. In my opinion (and note, it's just my opinion), zebra finches are extremely hard to tame, but they will get used to people, like our wild zebra finches did. The only really tame finches we've had are the ones we handfed.
Aww cute zebbie! I do love handtame finches!! I tame all of mine, i only have a couple that will have nothing to do with me. I love how yours retains a bond to you alot even in the presence of other finches. My hand tames will happily sit on my hand but if its a choice between me and their flock, 9 times out of 10 the flock wins. Do you think it is because you hand reared yours?
ps How diffficult is it to hand rear, i would like to know in case my finches abandon their nest in future?
@ZizZarkava I think it's because mine are hand reared. Hand rearing is not difficult. You just need a lot of patience and willpower as you have to wake up many times to feed your birds, and if you work or go to school you have to arrange a babysitter. Feeding the tiny birds is extremely difficult unless you can find proper equipment. But the trouble is forgotten as soon as you witness their first, proper flight, and they fly to you. <3
@fishpimp100 My little zebra finch Ziz was a pet shop buy, and to this date is the tamest of all my zebra finches. I dont hand rear any baby zebra finches, however all of my baby zebra finches have been very handtame and human friendly. Most of my zebra finches will more than happily eat from my hand as ive built up trust with them over time. I think some of them have a natural predisposition to trust. If you check out my channel you can see various videos of my tamest one Zi he's a sweetheart!
wow a tamed finch.. how did you tame yours? i have 2 finch 2 months ago and now they are four and the parents are still laying more clutches. would want some of the new clutch to be tamed
@ElectricTear20 Finches are excellent flyers and they won't hit windows or stuff. But if it's daylight out they might see through the window and think there's a lot of room outside (or an escape) and occasionally they might hit the window. We keep curtains in front of the window when our finches are out of the cage.
i just got one baby zebra finch and i was wondering what does it meen when its beak is dark black i dont get it is that a gender or is it suppose to do that
I work in a pet store and just took home a male and female Zebra Finch that were brought back to us. A young girl got them, became bored with them, wouldn't care for them so her parents brought them back. We didn't want to separate them again (we keep the males and females separate) so I bought them and took them home with me. They are so cute. I love these birds!
It's hard to get em like that. I tried. From hatch desensitizing them to humans, feeding directly into baby's mouth. Nope, they still hated me and hurt me if I tried to touch any of them. So I killed em. nah I didn't really
Cute! I'm having the same problem with my own finches, my pair recently had 4 little ones... and 3 turned out to be males... and now they are all turning on their sister, LOL. Going to move them into their own bachelor pad soon, I suppose.
Hello, can you explain what you mean by hand fed? We currently have two finches whom we hand feed seeds from the hand. We fed them since they could eat on their own but weren't able to feed them from a syringe. How did you hand feed them?
Hi, by hand feeding I mean feeding the birds with syringe from the day they hatch or some days depending on how long the parents have had interest on them.
Aww I know the feeling. My three male birds all have a thing for their mother and sister in the next cage. And what's sad is that the one male that isn't related to any of them is with the girls and neither of them like him.
Haha, I can't help but notice that people are freaking out over the male finch flirting with his sisters, but some humans have been known to do it to. Also, it used to be very common (in Europe, before the understanding of genes) for people to marry their first cousins! However, humans try to avoid breeding with close relations because we understand that we'd have a higher chance of creating a child with bad genes.
We had to keep the boy apart from his sisters (for obvious reasons), but keeping him alone was breaking my heart because they love other birds their kind. So we had to let them "talk" to each other, added with a little eye contact.
may seem gross but many commercial bird breeders imbreed birds with their siblings or parents, cousins etc for some many generations to get a fancy colour pattern. also happens with guppies, finches, buderigars, cockatiels, parrots list goes on.
I'm not sure what to think of it. I think they themselves don't care, but I still feel it's a bit sick. I would never do that but I don't breed birds for sale..
that is the whole point why people do it to animals, because it fucks with their genes and dna, maybe not hamfull as such if you do it to humans and primates, different colour patterns, fluffy feathers ect ect but deffinatly not healthy. instead with humans, your more likely to get a kid with 4 toes, two noses and no ears instead of brightly coloured hair and skin...
Hand feeding is not a quarantee. We've had pet store wild birds go soft on us and hand fed birds go wild. They have their own characteristics, too, you know. For crazyghost360: Do not use your hands at all, when near. That's a start. If they fly on your head, do NOT shoo them away with hand, but shake your head..
i have 5 zebra finches, 2 are albino, unfortunatly i had to take one of the albino females out of the main cage today becuase she was veery violently attacking the mother, currently she is in a tiny old hamster cage, but im goin out to get her her own cage, i wana tame her, she is around 4 months i think, is she too old to start taming?
lol I love how those sound, my gran had three of them but she had to give them up because she couldn't take care of them :( lovely birds though, could sit and listen to them for hours!
You'll have to offer your hand, maybe with some goodies, like peeled apple, water melon, food altogether. You'll have to wait for them to come. Yeah it is a good idea to separate him from his sisters so they siblings will not be feeble small and live short life. I had zebra finches myself as well. They should never mate with family member..ur birds are so cute :)
