I love your explanation of fear! I came on here because I've been getting the inner promptings to use Thoth Tarot, and hoping for some guidance. I believe I found an excellent teacher here! Thank you! :)
Thank you for this!! I totally agree. I think some cards are scary - not to me - but to my querents. Usually my first question is whether they had a reading done before or know about the tarot and I tell them they needn't be scared even if they don't like some of the cards and that the Death card appearing doesn't mean anyone is going to die.
Reminds me of a cartoon with the psychic looking at the crystal ball going "Holy crap!" and three dinosaurs sitting there going "What? What? What?" ;)
@SatuGustafson This is not what Tarot teachers tell you, but the key to reading the tarot is to have no significance to any card, whether 'good' or 'bad'.
Whatever fear is in the client was there long before the reading, and smart tarot readers see this is as an opportunity to discuss those fears, and release them.
@PaulHughesBarlow Yes. It's the message of the Temperance card in a way...you need to integrate "shadow" and "light" in order to become whole. Still I find there's so much fear of the cards. I often heard, "You play with the Devil cards??!!" or something along those lines. I work with the Thoth a lot and found that a lot of people are scared of it because they think Crowley was a Satanist - like it's bad juju. When I was 17, I was scared of it, too. Never used it. What a shame!
@SatuGustafson I once did a reading for a cute, petite French woman, who wanted to know about her new boyfriend. She asked for one more card, which happened to be the Devil card. I told her the Devil meant 'bondage', and her eyes lit up...
@PaulHughesBarlow I know that but a lot of people think he was and therefore are scared of the Thoth deck. Happened to me, too. When I was young and impressionable, somebody told me: don't use the Crowley cards, he was a devil worshipper, the cards have a negative energy. Silly, I know. It's such a great deck!!
@SatuGustafson Crowley was far too sophisticated to be any kind of worshipper. Unfortunately it is often ignorant tarot teachers who peddle stories about Thoth tarot, and it is clear that they have never even bothered to do any kind of research.
F.E.A.R. = False Evidence Appearing Real. I think Hollywood and TV here in the US have contributed to these negative vibes against Tarot. I also feel ignorant fundamental Christians in the early 80's with the whole "Satanic Panic" scare on talk shows about SRA (Satanic Ritual Abuse) that was proved as being false and as hype by an FBI report caused fear of anything connected to the occult. Therefore, ANYTHING that was related to the occult was labeled as being "Satanic" or of the Devil.
I'm glad this topic addressed. It is my feeling that fear of Tarot is based on cultural ignorance. If those of us in countries like the US and the UK were more familiar with the games played in other countries we'd have less of this Tarophobia. Not only are there actual card games played with Tarot, there are also playing cards graphically similar to divinatory Tarot. There's a Mexican game called Loteria which uses picture cards similar to the "Major Arcana" and also Spanish playing cards.

By the way, Crowley was not a Satanist.

I'm so agree with you. Would you like to be scared, so read newspapers. Tarot is to see the opportunities in life.
