Yeah, I really can't pick favorites. Their styles are so different... and they're both from my area. Can't leave either of them out, but so many people (especially younger folks) seem to be missing them.
People have always said some pretty negative things about Gatton and Buchanan, but you know, it is what it is. -- Also one of the reasons he quit using the magic dingus box.
Roy is the best Guitarplayer that ever exist. may the messiah take care of him, and bring him new strings for Nancy, so he can play with the great band in the sky. Rest in Peace, Roy. take care of jimi, janis, jim and syd.
I was told by ***** Cage(Bob Dylan guitarist) that he killed himself over a recent divorce and a DUI charge while he was in lockup. Depression hurts. He was the best and is missed
Your above explanation is what the police submitted.
Roy had marital problems, but was not divorced. His widow, Judy Buchanan, stated that she lifted the lid of his coffin & saw massive head wounds.
Roy was most likely beaten to death by police or other guys in the lock-up. He had serious addiction problems & probably pissed of the wrong guy...but he didn't deserve to die.
Please stop repeating the "jailhouse suicide" story. It's probably not true. Do you trust the police or the wife more?
I WAS TOLD I WAS 1 BLACK GUY CHARGED WITH RAPE AND A LATINO GUY BOTH CAVED IN HIS FACE OVER THE FACT HE WAS DEFENDING HIMSELF OVER BEING CALLED A HICK CRACKER..im writing a book over these tragic findings with some police witnesses cant say more for now rip ROY i will uncover the truth for your beauty was unmatched by most
What went wrong with Roy`s career and life? He`s album "Rescue me" was success in both,musical/financial aspect! On that album horn section is a original "TOWER OF POWER" without a singer, only, with Stephen "Doc" Kupka on baritone sax,and Mick Gillette on lead trumpet! They were (in that time)a ROLLS-ROYCE among brass sections, and they were very expensive too!Even "MEMPHIS HORNS" were much less popular!
There was a popularity,lot of concerts,and money,as well.WHAT WENT WRONG?Anybody knows?

Roy truly speaks with his guitar, he adds something that alot of guitarists don't use as much, dynamics, this is what makes his playing sound more soulful, you can have all the technical skill in the world but still not master this aspect of playing. Im not claiming to have known the man, but Roy didn't seem like the happiest person, i believe he ended up committing suicide in a jail cell in 1988. This is where the soul of his music is though, its all in experience.
its dumb to say that fast is soul less and slow and meaningful is what is truly great. cuz there both different styles. and both styles are beautiful in there own way. like the solo to nottingham lace by buckethead. yes its fast. but listen to it and tell me its not beautiful. just respect different styles. even if u hate satriani and think he shreds soul lessly. respect him and his style. music isnt meant to be one certain way its meant to be molded differently. im a 15 year old guitar player.
20 years from now, when you've had time to hear more guitarists and become a better player yourself, you will realize how great and eduring guys like Roy truly are. Guys like Buckethead, though talented, are never going to have the same legacy as Roy and Danny. Period.
Roy was often referred to as "the guitar player's guitar player," or "the greatest unknown guitar player in the world." The Rolling Stones asked him to join the group. I saw him in Chicago in the 80s and he was simply amazing. Other famous guitar players were there to watch him which was normal for his concerts. He was truly great. Thanks for posting this.
So many much more famous guitarists who are soul-less flashy wankers full of useless runs like Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Satriani etc. They can all go suck lemons - this guy with a fedora and a beer gut playing and twisting one note on a frapped telecaster puts them all to shame with a strong clear tone, but mainly with pain and true soul. He can flash his way up the fretboard like those cockmasters if he wants to, but only if it adds to the feel, not for the sake of it.
I wouldn't go so far to call Satriani "soul-less". Just check out his song "searching" on this service. he's puts a lot of soul in his music. of course he plays fast, but if I was as fast as him, I would too. and I think you'd do the same.
and fast doesn't mean "soul-less", anyway.
however, I've just heard Roy for the first time and I'm very impressed.
i don't think satriani's own mother would say he's "soulfull"....and you can play as fast as him, fast is easy-- just repeat patterns, and increase speed- it's like typing, not hard to do--- but you can't practice passion-- you can't teach someone how to "care", or to "empathize" ,or to feel things deeply.
It's not fair to go comparing Roy with Eddie or Vai. Roy is extremely expressive and melodic. But if you could give Eddie Van Halen a chance and maybe listen to The Women and Children First album I think you'll agree that Eddie is no slouch.
Unlike the show-offs, RB was a very musical. Vai is a tasteless freak show in comparison. I love his amplifier stack - one Twin Reverb - and the effects pedals - none.
I agree with everything but it should be mentioned that in the 80's Roy started using a Boss Delay. As far as I know that was the only pedal he ever used. Nothing to hide mistakes with, that's for sure. It's easy to play fast with an OD pedal covering your ass!
This is the 1st song i heard from Roy, and still my fav. I found it in a old record store in L.A. twenty+ years ago...R.I.P. Roy know one can touch you, or could...
Do not spray your guitar with lemon pledge. If you do, all the gays will make a pass at you cause they will think your a great housekeeper. Roy sprayed it on his fingers so the would have just the right kind of slide. It saved him a fortune cause it was cheaper than colone. And he could lick his fingers and get a buzz.
Lemon pledge is when you tell your love for lemons. Love is kind of sour at times. Silly, it comes in a spray can for cleaning wood furnature or doors. It smells like lemon.
Here in Serbia,Roy Buchanan is probably the most honoured blues guitarist. After him is Stevie Ray Vaughan,Buddy Guy and Albert Collins!Roy`s musical interpretation is timeless and extraordinary! He`s tone is main reason why kids here in Serbia choose fender telecaster as their first guitar.Later, they realize about amplifiers and playing style and practicing.
And well should he be. I know he shunned the spotlight, but with that talent it has always amazed me that he wasn't a guitar superstar despite himself. A musical master, innovative, special and simply the best!
They were (in that time)a ROLLS-ROYCE among brass sections, and they were very expensive too!Even "MEMPHIS HORNS" were much less popular.

..roy played at the town hall auck N.Z 86-87?..i was 21 @the time..the bar opened, and the rest is history!!..wot a night!!...all i remember is roy at the edge of the stage on his knees and i was there hitting the strings while his fingers ran up the fret-board!..sadly missed!!God Bless!R.I.P..voted worlds greatest unknown guitarist 82-84?..correct me if i'm wrong..CHEERS!
He never gets stuck!! It's one thing to know your scales everywhere on the fretboard, but it's really something else to know just what to place where in a tasteful way. I can't think of anyone that was so adept at getting out of jams on where you should go next on the fretboard with so much feeling as Roy did. What a macroscopic attention span he had!!
Thank you so much to the people who have posted these videos. Otherwise many people would never get to see the genius at work. I only got to see him once when he toured Australia in 1986. I was so close I picked his watch up for him when it fell off!
Roy was the best there will ever be inventing his style and in doing so mastering every style. How many guitartist can play the styles Roy played with the mastery he had? Not many, if any.
Is the guitar he's playing here the famous Nancy guitar, or is it another one of his guitars? Anyone know?

The actual name of the tune is "Wayfaring Stranger."
Roy was great--a big loss.
countofla 3 years ago 2
I think the title is a conscious departure from "Wayfaring Stranger"; the music is a variation on Wayfaring Stranger, so the title
is a variation as well (IMHO).

I was told by ***** Cage(Bob Dylan guitarist) that he killed himself over a recent divorce and a DUI charge while he was in lockup. Depression hurts. He was the best and is missed
Boogiechild7 3 years ago
Your above explanation is what the police submitted.
Roy had marital problems, but was not divorced. His widow, Judy Buchanan, stated that she lifted the lid of his coffin & saw massive head wounds.
Roy was most likely beaten to death by police or other guys in the lock-up. He had serious addiction problems & probably pissed of the wrong guy...but he didn't deserve to die.
Please stop repeating the "jailhouse suicide" story. It's probably not true. Do you trust the police or the wife more?

What went wrong with Roy`s career and life? He`s album "Rescue me" was success in both,musical/financial aspect! On that album horn section is a original "TOWER OF POWER" without a singer, only, with Stephen "Doc" Kupka on baritone sax,and Mick Gillette on lead trumpet! They were (in that time)a ROLLS-ROYCE among brass sections, and they were very expensive too!Even "MEMPHIS HORNS" were much less popular!
There was a popularity,lot of concerts,and money,as well.WHAT WENT WRONG?Anybody knows?

He used a digital delay pedal...and I own it. He turned down the Rolling Stones and sadly ended up hanging himself in jail.

Beastman,
20 years from now, when you've had time to hear more guitarists and become a better player yourself, you will realize how great and eduring guys like Roy truly are. Guys like Buckethead, though talented, are never going to have the same legacy as Roy and Danny. Period.

The Telecaster is alive...

He can flash his way up the fretboard like those cockmasters if he wants to, but only if it adds to the feel, not for the sake of it.
camo789 4 years ago 5
I wouldn't go so far to call Satriani "soul-less". Just check out his song "searching" on this service. he's puts a lot of soul in his music. of course he plays fast, but if I was as fast as him, I would too. and I think you'd do the same.
and fast doesn't mean "soul-less", anyway.
however, I've just heard Roy for the first time and I'm very impressed.
Widmowiec 4 years ago 2
Yeah probably unfair to include Satriani in that list coz I know fuck all about him :) Cheers for the correction!
camo789 4 years ago
I just respect him very much. He mixes many different styles and even if he's not the best at any, he's in the lead.
Steve Vai and Van Halen don't move me at all but I don't know them much.
Widmowiec 4 years ago
i don't think satriani's own mother would say he's "soulfull"....and you can play as fast as him, fast is easy-- just repeat patterns, and increase speed- it's like typing, not hard to do--- but you can't practice passion-- you can't teach someone how to "care", or to "empathize" ,or to feel things deeply.
aballballball 4 years ago 2
It's not fair to go comparing Roy with Eddie or Vai. Roy is extremely expressive and melodic. But if you could give Eddie Van Halen a chance and maybe listen to The Women and Children First album I think you'll agree that Eddie is no slouch.
fabbola 4 years ago
Unlike the show-offs, RB was a very musical. Vai is a tasteless freak show in comparison. I love his amplifier stack - one Twin Reverb - and the effects pedals - none.
tallmunchkin 4 years ago
I agree with everything but it should be mentioned that in the 80's Roy started using a Boss Delay. As far as I know that was the only pedal he ever used. Nothing to hide mistakes with, that's for sure. It's easy to play fast with an OD pedal covering your ass!

CREDITS4CARBON 4 years ago
Lemon pledge is when you tell your love for lemons. Love is kind of sour at times. Silly, it comes in a spray can for cleaning wood furnature or doors. It smells like lemon.

Here in Serbia,Roy Buchanan is probably the most honoured blues guitarist. After him is Stevie Ray Vaughan,Buddy Guy and Albert Collins!Roy`s musical interpretation is timeless and extraordinary! He`s tone is main reason why kids here in Serbia choose fender telecaster as their first guitar.Later, they realize about amplifiers and playing style and practicing.
majstordx11 4 years ago
And well should he be. I know he shunned the spotlight, but with that talent it has always amazed me that he wasn't a guitar superstar despite himself. A musical master, innovative, special and simply the best!
