@Loscaldazar My oldish Micra CVT uses a maraged metal belt (which seems to be a long set of thin rings) and AFAIK so did the slightly earlier Justy (1991 or so?). It's hard to see from this video but it's probably similar.
So nothing new in using a metal belt for CVTs, but maybe there are some other new developments here which reduce belt shudder etc.
That said though, CVTs in the Micra at least seem to last as long as a manual gearbox... but replacing them is too expensive when they do fail.
@ss19800 That's true, I enjoy driving my CVT but the rev range is always around 2000-2500, even at low speeds, which is a bit annoying. So when I drive a manual I usually stick between 3rd and 4th, leaving the revs comfortable and low for a change :D
What I'd like to see is is an automatic made for use with the Subaru Boxer Diesel engine. Hopefully, this will be it. I prefer manual shift transmission, but naturally most people here in America don't like manual shifting, so this looks like the next best thing.
That might be the situation in the United States, but here in Scandinavia manual stick-shift transmission is the most common. I'm not saying that everyone is particularly good with it, but most people can handle it.
And if you can't operate a manual transmission during the drivers test, you get a restriction on your license, limiting you to automatic transmission vehicles.
But as you say, when a person starts his driving experience with an automatic he will have a hard time learning manual.
@csmaster65 That's unfortunate. My first car, had a 5-sp manual shift. My stepdad had a Toyota pickup truck that had a manual transmission. So I had plenty of practice driving manual shift cars, and thus enjoyed driving manual transmission. I'm not against automatic for certain situations, like steep hills. But otherwise, I still prefer manual shifting transmission.
All subarus use JAtco tansmission that used to problematic I mean stupid shifting throu the gears, constant jerks, kicks, up rev-s makes me nervous on the road, even with this new CVT- from jatco previous problems r not solved, this for sure shows how FHI cares about it's customers, no KAIZEN with subarus JATCO trannies, all except Jacto tranny is perfect in subaru
Well, my wish was granted. I must say I was thoroughly impressed. I've heard horror stories of CVTs (unresponsive, rubber band reaction, etc.), but I had no problems with this one. It's very smooth and responsive. Hell, I even had fun using the paddle shifters. I never thought that would happen.
But the big question to cvt and it was invented years ago and never deploy to vehicle is, how long does it last untill you have to change the belt?

ALL BULL SHIT!
Just buy a manual car for those ppl who preferred manual transmission!
Whats the point for comment "I prefer manual" on a CVT transmission post?!

hmm. I'd like to know how long these last compared to regular transmissions..

@ericpinter29 i think there made of kevlar.... GAWS I HOPE ITS KEVLAR! i hate walking :(

@ericpinter29
It's not a belt-it's a metal chain driven CVT which makes it more reliable than other CVT's
@NastytheGREASERZOMBI
look above its a metal chain :)

I like that! Efficient design. But in real life, it keeps the revs real high and too noisy to my ears, after my Lexuses and Buicks.

@batlin Test drove a 2.5i with lineartronic the other day. Revs at 50 km/h (about 30 mph) was just over 1000 rpm.

@Tjita1 Wow much nicer! Although mine is a 1L Micra so maybe that plays a part ;)

People have become so spoiled by automatic shifting that we've all but forgotten the art of manual shifting and using the clutch.

Even though I prefer manuals, I definitely want to try out the new Legacy with the CVT.

I hear you, but I want the Outback of course. :-)
