  • honorable attempt

  • where did this song come from? was this in a soundtrack or tribute album? i need it!

  • you must scream this song like tom waits don't sing it

  • They should've had Lanegan sing it...suits the "roughneck" flavor of the song better

  • SlideShow of the Year award.

  • sure is baby...

  • what record is this off of?

  • @piegar Josh Homme is an almost 40 year old world famous mucisian and is a "frat boy rocker"?

  • Being blank to both versions and being a fan of both artists, I am leaning towards this version. I'm sure if I heard Tom's version first I'd disagree.

  • @gocaps83 I'll give you that gocaps83, i heard the other first and i think that's better. Loads better, heaps better, oh god so, so, so much better.

  • I like both QOTSA and Wait but this cover blows!

  • @MrSnicklfritz Check out this blog page: Metal Bastard Goes Soft and look under the Desert Rock thread. There's a few odditty comps and one of 'em has this song.

  • cool session

  • I'm a die-hard fan of Mr. Waits and I like this cover.

  • I think Josh Homme's voice works good for this song. It's a bit Jagger-ish here.

Homme sounds nothing like Waits, but what would be the point of doing a cover if it was going to sound like the original anyway?

No, it's not a spectacular cover. But it's fine.

  • @thinkingdrummer I agree. instrumentally it's perfect but Josh Homme, despite being as manly as a man can get, his voice isn't as dirty and low. Mark Lanegan or Billy Gibbons should have sang this it would have been insane.

  • Ash Grunwald's cover was better but neither of them have them anything on the original.

  • Charger

  • Never cover a killer. I can't really comment on how good or bad the song is, as I had to shut it off as soon as Homme started singing.

  • I love QOTSA, but Tom Waits definitely makes the better version of this song.

  • was this on a compilation or something?

where do you got this from ?

  • ANYONE KNOW WHAT SORT OF CAR THAT IS???

  • @gomerpyleism Mercury Cougar late 60s'

  • mega krass! Taio cruz geh weinen!!!

  • I'm sorry, you purists... but THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!

  • Does he say "I look good without a soul" instead of shirt?

  • @slicknickpro i think he says "i look good without a shirt on"

  • Josh is singing.

  • Who's singing? Mark or Josh?

  • Not a fan of this version :(

  • is that pic from dusk till dawn?

  • @jeffyman5000

    Yes it is

  • makes my PP hard for lack of a better comment!!! not pointless just pointless who cares its great .....music wonderful

  • @jeffyman5000 Nope,itsa pic of a Ford mercury cougar 69 hahhaaaha

  • How is a cover pointless...? It's music dude, just listen and enjoy. Who cares....

  • @CharlyRaaad i like the original more too. its much more grittier, but in no way has this gone "wrong".

  • haters gonna hate, QOTSA = awesome, Tom Waits = awesome

  • What's the point in doing a cover version that doesn't even attempt to do something new with the song?

The instrumentation is virtually identical (right down to the guitar tone), only not as good, and without the incredible vocals that make the original what it is.

To be fair, it's pretty much impossible to make this song sound any more bad-ass than Tom Waits did, which begs my original question: why cover it unless you are going to attempt to do something new with it?

  • @Matthewkilb much sludgier guitar than the original, and just where exactly does it say a cover should be completely different from the original? This is what qotsa sound like anyway, you want them to completely alter their sound just to please you? I hate pricks like you who just try as hard as they can hate everything for ridiculously petty reasons, this is a decent cover.

  • @Stevo59462 Well, I was going to reply rationally, but since you called me a prick just for voicing an opinion, that option is pretty much out the window.

I actually like QOTSA. I just feel that this cover is pretty pointless. It adds nothing and changes nothing. Tom Waits vocals are far superior, and the whole atmosphere of the original is far darker.

I can see why they covered it though, seeing as they haven't come up with any decent original material since Songs for the Deaf.

    Prick.

  • @Matthewkilb opinions are opinions dude, and the way you expressed yours made you sound like a prick. They played it the way they would have played it if they'd written it, this is their style. If you just think the original is better, that's cool. But launching a needless attack on a decent cover just because it wasn't what you consider to be an improvement makes you a prick.

  • @Stevo59462 No. Calling someone a prick makes you a prick.

Just because they are they mighty QOTSA, doesn't mean that they are beyond criticism. I believe they should be criticised for this cover, as it is poor.

Josh Homme is a songwriter. He should do something creative rather than just slavishly copying something that already exists. Again, I can see why he did it though, as his own songwriting skills have dropped off in a major way. All that drug abuse obviously taking its toll.

  • @Matthewkilb could you not tell from the fact I didn't rise to your last comment that I'm not a massive QOTSA fanboy? Don't criticise a band for playing the way they always have, Josh Homme can't read your fucking mind to play exactly the way you want him to. You have a twisted and wrong view of what a cover should be. Homme didn't write this song so what do his songwriting skills have to do with anything? I repeat, prick.

It was nice talking but I have better things to do with my life bye.

  • @Stevo59462 No you don't. You will read my comment and get annoyed. I win, and this is still a shit cover.

    :)

  • So by that reasoning nobody should do covers?? I don't get it, so that means most rock music wouldnt exist because british musicians (covered or stole) from blues artists. And should bands do covers live on stage?? or should they just do their own stuff and not have the freedom of expression to play whatever the fucking feel like??? So if your in a band you'd never want to fuck around in the studio and record some song you like, make it your own?? That's idiotic

  • @mountainjam81 You obviously didn't read my comment properly. Where di I say that nobody should do covers? i just questioned the point of doing a cover that doesn't even attempt to bring anything NEW to the song.

The British musicians who covered/stole from the blues didn't just copy the songs they heard note for note. They used the styles and techniques of American blues artists and did something new with it.

QOTSA are a good band, but this is a pointless cover.

  • @Matthewkilb Well, that's just like, your opinion, man.

  • the mini delay on his voice is awesome :P

  • Tom Waits, Roky Erickson, The Misfits... Yeah these guys have great taste.

  • If the Queens would have gotten Tom Waits to sing on this, it would have been the best of both worlds. Queens made the music to this one pretty badass.

  • @JefferstChmilst Agreed, I LOVE the instrumentation in this, it's funkier than the original and gives it a great drive, I would have hoped Josh would have put his vocals through a megaphone or something to get that Tom Waits honk.

  • Tom's Voice is the key.

  • Listening to this song while stoned will help you understand the value of this version.

  • @babyg474

Yea but anything while you're stoned is awesome. I could blow my nose for thirty minutes if I'm on the right kind of drug, and it would be awesome.

  • @thSubliminalCriminal ISH! Do the wrong drug and that's exactly what you'll be doin', all day long, heh

  • @handymandan100

Yea I been there. Some ass gave me these pills said "crush em up and snort em" So I did and they are the kind you DO NOT SNORT!! talk about red burning eyes some heavy evil pain in the sinuses.

  • When I saw they covered this I flipped! but then I thought eh it's okay

  • It's no more than an ok cover. The best version of this song is on Tom Waits's Glitter & Doom live album.

  • kinda like Tom Waits' better

  • Covers are always a touchy subject. Madonna covering American Pie was a travesty. Britney Spears raping Satisfaction made my ears bleed. However, Tool doing a cover of Led Zeppelin or Tom Waits doing a cover of the Ramones or Husker Du covering the Byrds all totally rock. There is a definite difference between mindless pandering and paying homage and if you pay homage you had better fucking rock hard and do it right.

  • @ColmaKiddo It was the Ramones covering Tom Waits, not the other way round (I Don't Want to Grow Up). It's from the 1992 album Bone Machine and The Ramones did it on the 1995 album Adios Amigos.

  • @HenrikeRamone46 aaactually it was tom waits cover of the ramones "the return of jackie and judy" (recorded by the ramones in 1980) on orphans (first appearing on a ramones tribute album in 2003) that i was referring to. so yeah it was the other way around. but thanks for the history lesson there chief.

  • Personally Queens of the stone age just loves to play, so if they play a song it's cuz they fuckin love it. Not to say they are better, they would never fuckin say that, they got their shit together, follow their musicianship, they fuckin rock. and unlike alot of people, they fuckin practice and make it look good. If your in the music industry just for fame and looks, then your in it for the wrong reasons, You just need to wanna play your fuckin heart out. I don't care what anyone else says.

  • Nice cougar.

  • This song should have been in Natural Born Killers.

  • all good stuff but fucking get it right

  • what a shit cover

  • every cover should be, what the song would sound like if it was written by the covering band. This sounds like a queens of the stone age song, which is good. if they made it less in your face and simpler, and josh tried to sound gravely like tom, it would be kind of weird and dumb.

  • Doing justices to Tom Waits is a very difficult task.

  • I'm not a Queens of the Stone Age fan, but this is a really excellent cover, as is their version of Brian Eno's "Needle In The Camel's Eye." I guess I just like them better as a cover band.

  • @twotimespecial I;m a massive fan of Queens and Tom Waits, this cover is the band saying "We're fans" I apreciate people like you who arnt fans but give credit where its due. Good on you.

  • Comment removed

  • This is a pretty decent cover.

  • they are just genius. by the way nice car on the pic.

  • Not raggin, but at least homosexuals have a version of this awesome amazing, mindblowing track!!

  • @thSubliminalCriminal Josh Homme's propably had more lasses in a day than you have in your whole life

  • @Antroid123 Lasses LMAO I'm, gonna have to remember that one...Lasses

  • fu - good is good

  • LOVE this song! I've been looking for it ever since I watched "fight club" for the first time! took me 5 years to find it xD

  • @QueenOfDesire666 Haha, I beat you! It only took me two years ;)

  • @Jontazz haha, damn! how did you do that? ;)

  • @QueenOfDesire666 you still didnt. the song to be heard in fight club is the original version by Tom Waits.

  • @VanTobyx I know, but on youtube you only find some live versions of the original song.

  • Thanks for the Queens, great tune.

  • how the hell does mark lanegan not do the vocals for this? he sounds just like tom waits!

  • @ktsITTE Too obvious, I guess :)

  • @ktsITTE Qué gracia tendría hacer una versión de este tema con una voz parecida a la de Tom? Para eso está la original.

  • @ktsITTE The point of a cover isn't to sound like the original. It's to make it your own.

  • Has this anything to do with larry davis's going out west?

  • spam spelt backwards -maps

    maps spelt backwards-lost

  • Better than Waits.

  • muscle cars ALWAYS look the part banged up and dusty. aka the last V8 interceptor

  • @onyachamp yes, couldn't agree more with you there champ

  • @onyachamp anyone have an idea what car that delicious piece of metal is?

  • @onyachamp i do believe it may be a 1968 mercury cougar mate

  • @onyachamp cheers champ

  • @onyachamp no wucken furries bloke

  • @onyachamp my, my don't you just look good without a shirt on?

  • @onyachamp fag

  • I never heard cover of Tom Waits' song, which would be better than original. Here's the same.

  • Check out jam Grosso King of Crater Lake sometime, it's on one of the Desert Sessions, they drop out a fat heapin helpin of Tom Waits vocals that more than makes up for any perceived inadequacies of this cover. Do it.

  • @cptnwilliamread lol if you mean by cookie monsta

  • I love Queens, but this song just doesn't do it for me. Tom Waits ftw.

  • Tom Waits, Tom Waits, Tom Waits... pfft who cares. He has more in common with Captain Kangaroo than qotsa. Qotsa made a good song a million times better. Waits is overblown. He's a character, I prefer artists who are just themselves and not some character they play up for the masses.

  • @garagerawk27 what?

  • @garagerawk27

By saying this you are disregarding David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain, and probably countless other artists who develop a persona to survive the music industry.

    Lrn2music

  • I much prefer Tom's voice for this one, but QOTSA effing NAILED the instrumental parts of this one.

  • This song rules so hard. Both versions. And any future covers. Because if you're going to pay tribute and cover an artist of godly proportions, a Tom Waits song solidifies the fact that you have good taste.

QOTSA was already beyond awesome before I heard this cover. Now, I'm exponentially confident of their excellence.

  • its easy, music es better

voice NEVER is better without Tom Waits....

but whatever this is the same song

  • what´s the point of this shit, everyone sounds like a pussy compared to Tom Waits, even more if you´re making a fucking Tom Waits cover, fucking pansies.

  • The Queens covering tom Waits. How can that go wrong?

  • @TheRoeliskoel well, the vocalist sound like a fag comparred to Tom Waits for starters,,
