@NegaRose13 Actually she was either 14 and or 15 when they filmed this movie, I just saw a documentary from nextflix called: Sex and the Cinema and it was talking about this film.
this movie doesn't live up to the book, of course. it's still pretty good from what I've seen, but only if you can pretend it's not based on the book.
It really is a beautiful film despite the disturbing pedophilia part anyways.really its not disgusting its art and you should all watch the original movie and read the damn book because it'll help you get a little bit smarter.maybe. AND really it's all lolita. shes such a flirt and from the beginning there are signs that she wants him all along. plus im pretty sure she's got some sort of fetish with her feet because throughout the movie shes touching him with them.
@Xstarsushi I think you are right - But, I also think many young girls don't realize what they are doing to a full extend, they only know it has an effect on men but see it as some sort of game or way to get attention - and thats why the older person should be the responsible.
As he says in this movie he slowly kills her. I don't think she realized her little "game" would get to the point of a sexual relationship, and I think is makes her feel disgusting .. suddenly reality hits.
@LittleRubberSquare I think in this case she knows exactly what she is doing regardless of age... the man in the film may be blinded by love? You know that saying that you fall in love with someone regardles of who they are... and nothing else matters.
i saw this film about 3 weeks ago at quater past twelve in the morning. i watched it but i cant work out what it is about? to me it seems that the film is about peadophillia. am i right?
Why do people think this film is sick ? people think its ok to watch films of people being tortured (saw) or stabbed to death (scream) i dont understand
@cymrutroll Right This film is BEAUTIFUL! And Lolita is the bad person here, not Humbert. I am **NOT** saying that raping children is good BUT remember that Lo was a nympho. She was not even a virgin when she had sex with Humbert, and before him, with Charlie at the camp. Have you read the book? There is one scene in which Lo´s bragging with her new sweater: "It was made from virgin wool," she says, to which her best friend replies: "My dear, this sweater is the only thing..." Dot dot dot.
@cymrutroll People like to see movies like Saw (people getting tortured and trapped in some mans game) and Hostel... it's not sick it's just thought provoking any good film hits this plateau.
1) 7:08 Her soft butt wobbles (it's obviously not firm). And the film crew just "happened" to catch that in slow motion.
2) If you like 14 year old girls who are starting to develop the physical features, you're a hebephile, not a pedophile. The whole point in Nabokov's book is that Lolita is 12 and looks like a child, not a 14 year old girl who's started to develop tits and ass.
3) This movie suffers from censoring, but Kubrick's movie suffers from that a lot more.
The Lolita movies are pathetic compared to the actual novel. The movies can't come close to recreating the depth achieved in the book.Nabokov uses a very clever literary device known as the "unreliable narrator" to portray Lolita the way Humbert himself sees her not how she is in reality. In reality Lolita is nothing but a scared, confused, tortured child being used as a sexual plaything by a pediophile. Movies always overplay the nymphet angle to the detriment of the complex storyline.
@evesdrop1982 Yes. I've read the book several times and it is written so well. A movie would never be able to portray H.H's tale and his point of view. (his contempt for regular women and other men, etc.) And yes, Lolita was probably the same as any normal kid, but he saw her as a nymh and probably exaggerated the things she did. I wouldn't be surprised if in reality she had never seduced him but that he perceived it that way because of his sickness. She may have felt pressured into everything..
@celinelester And that's what makes the book a classic. You read the book from Humbert's point of view but every so often his version of the story shows cracks and "the jury" is given the realization that the way he is portraying the events are a combination of purposeful deceit, rationlization, projection and misconceptions.
@evesdrop1982 No matter what the movie will never be the same as the novel the same goes to the original movie ,but atleast it brings some kind of visiual to what Lolita may be seen in the eyes of the narrator. May not be the same but atleast it brings a ;itt;e entertainment :D.
How do actors do scenes like this and not get emotionally involved? Like how do they go about their day after this? Dominique:" oh hey Jeremy! I just kissed you a little while back and it was intense and full of chemistry, but what do you have for lunch there?"
Jeremy Irons is an talented actor. I love him in "Lolita"'; "Die Hard with Vengence"; Three Musketeers etc. He's kinda like sexy in the fine wine way. I have the book and i saw both movies. Excellent.
@lilybellebutterfly You're saying that you'd feel more comfortable if an old man was looking at your homophobic ass with a lecherous look on his face than if you saw two happy people who just happened to be in a same sex relationship? Words fail me here. However, moving on from your issues I think Lolita is not about seduction at all. I think it's about a man who never truly grew up and struggled with his crippling mental disorder. People like you love to stir shit up, just shut up and watch.
well, it's sth natural..in my case..old men come tome..and they fal in love with me..but the curious thing is that I like it too....I think it's a natural sexaepealing from me.....and I feel fine..cuz I feel more secure..more cnfident with them...but they loose their mind for me......
It's funny how 100 years ago marrying and having babies with 14-16 yr olds was commonplace and now it's "illegal"? When life and times were hard, survival and family growth was ok, but now that times are so good, we've decided that 17 years old is a minor and against the Law. Well, long time ago, it was "WRONG" to marry and have babies with a negro, now today it's praised and even promoted. We even let lesbians and gays celebrate love, yet we frown upon an older man loving a young girl?
@Mr1000words a mature man is in my opinion the best idol for a young girl to learn men for good BUT only under presuppositions, that is he is intelligent, instictive- a real teacher to the little ones.
And, of course, mature enough to show her the world, not just fuck and leave her.
@Mr1000words We frown upon an older man loving a young girl? Young Girls can be easily manipulated by older men, that's why. Dolores is not a good example, but 14-16 year olds are still children.
@Mr1000words I can't agree with you more. Homosexuality is disgusting, that's a fact, even if it's politically and ideologically incorrect to say this. And biblically speaking, the ancient city of Sodom was burnt with fire from the sky by God himself for homosexuality, not because of men who had sex with girls younger than 18. And destruction of Sodom was an unique punishment, which never happened afterwards for any other sin. Sodomy comes from Sodom and it's the old term for homosexuality.
@lillybellebutterfly1 The Bible never says Sodom was burnt for homosexuality. The punishment followed a situation of forced sex just as much as a situation of homosexual sex. So for all we know Sodom may have been burnt for the sin of rape.
@Mr1000words therefore, homosexual relationships are a much severe sin than fantasies of men with underage girls, which at least respect the pattern God established for us, man and woman that is.
Where is Lolita's father? I don't believe he is mentioned at all in this film. This is exactly what can happen when a girl has an unloving or absent father. She's trying to get a fatherly kind of love the only way she knows how. I lost my virginity to a much older man at 14 for that same reason.
This is an extraordinary film! the way it makes you feel uncomfortable and sick when he kisses a little girl but at the same time you understand that intense feeling he has for her and you want it to happen!!
@jimena31 Yes! This entire film (and the book) take everything you know and throws it out the window. On the one hand, Humbert's actions are so completely wrong and disgusting, but Lolita tries to show it to you from his eyes so you're forced to see him as more of the victim than the criminal. Both actors do an amazing job in this version to give you that perspective too.
Melanie Griffith is a bad actress...she is just awful! The way each time she says her lines, she sounds stupid. She doesn't give enough effort to bring out the character like how Shelley Winters did in the original Stanley Kubrick's version. And that Dominque Swain...she is also not that good portraying Lolita, like Sue Lyon did. With Sue playing in the original Lolita version, you enjoy her performance, because of that charm she gave into her character. But with this actress...I'm not pleased.
@ThePackie91 I think she is great here - she comes across as a bitch, but she just tries to do the right thing for her daughter. I think you misunderstood.
you have an immature girl who toyed with an older man that accidently falls for her. Im not sure who the victim is but the movie does a good job of showing the depth of their relationship; its almost like they needed each other desperately
@kors189 That's what I love so much about this movie. We have this preconceived idea that this sort of relationship is wrong - and I agree that it is wrong - but Lolita forces you to question your assumptions because Humbert doesn't want to fall for Lolita, he just does. He's not an innocent character by any means, but neither is she.
@kors189 True, Lolita was toying with Humbert. She was playing at being an adult, "acting out" what she saw in movies and in magazines. In the book it often talks about how she is pretending to be sexy like the starlets she admires. I don't think she wanted/expected it to go as far as it did and didn't know how to back out... she was still so young, she needed an adult in her life, some kind of parent figure to care for her, and this was all she had.
These girls exist every where, what ever way you want to think about it, its simple, they want to do things to older guys, most people are ignorant to this fact and can't comprehend what goes on in peoples heads, even young girls, remembering things I did as a kid goes to prove that, and the sad part is that parents forget what its like to be that age, and most of the time go unaware that there children are engaging in these things, but weather they know or not it will persist and continue.
@strongarmeric Not sure how true this is, as I young girl, I thought older men were gross and disgusting. But, I observe is more true is that young girls are innocent to how men of all ages see them: sexual objects of desire. It is men's visual, sexual drive that sees these girls. It is unclear when young girls realize how men truly see them, but it truly is a loss of innocence when they do. It is men who "want to do things".
@Leona10037 Humbert wasnt a pedo.......... because he didnt go for more then one, there can be one defining moment in persons life that not only defines them but shapes there life and the way they think, the other parts in the movie like where he touched the little girls hand in the bunny suit was for effect or to give you that uneasy feeling, the point is when we were 15 and seen the same age girls, then when you gain a few years guys dont act like they dont say damn im ole enough to be her dad
@strongarmeric Have you listened to some of the things he says where he gives himself away? Jeremy Irons also narrates the audio book and there is a scene where he goes into detail about his desire for young women below the age of 14. He discusses in minute detail him hiring a prostitute who lied about her age and how he detested noticing the growing bone structure that revealed a girl older than 14! He saw an opportunity to satisfy his sickness.
@strongarmeric I do believe some mothers never acted as such towards older men in their younger years. IM FIFTEEN, I think engaging in such things is whorish and comes with very bad consequences. Hence why I feel no sorrows towards Dolores. Teens need to remember their place. If I had a child, be it girl or boy, to do those things, I would get mad as hell!
@ras144 U R mighty harsh on your bretheren!! Legally, we set the age of 18 when a person can be legally responsible as an adult for very good reasons. People mature at different rates, have different parental and life circumstances that they had NO choice in. No one should be penalized for their entire lives much less have their lives ruined for the sick weaknesses of grown ups and Lolita is a the victim here. If U R 15 as you say, try to show a little compassion and it will do U good in life
@Leona10037 Um..I cant show compassion to something I dont understand. If I was Lolita, I wouldn't waste my time flirty. I would call the police immediately or least runaway as soon as I got to school, there are girls who are taken hostage and dont see the light of day for years. That's not Lolita, she had all the chance in the world to run and she chooses to run *SPOILER ALART* with another pedophile. Humbert is a terrible person, but Lolita doesn't get my entire compassion, some but not all.
@ras144 See, try to look at how you judge her here in a way that is unfair and unjust. It was the 1950s so women don't have the kind of freedoms, self confidence or technology U have today. As a young girl, who is taken to bed by "dad" then told, mom is dead. Lolita felt trapped, had she gone to the cops, she probably feared, and probably correctly so, given the times, she wouldn't have been believed. Even TODAY her perpetrator is see as HER victim by many!
@Leona10037 Self-confidence and Technology had nothing to do with it. I admit you're right when saying the cops wouldn't have helped. But couldn't she have picked a better plan *SPOILER* than to leave one Pedophile to another?
@ras144 I don't claim to have full understanding of her motivations, but rather than focusing on what SHE as the victim did wrong, let's blame the sicko. The point is her soul was broken, she learned something powerful in 'dad's" bed, to be SEX OBJECTI. That is the tragedy of Lolita. However clumsy or uneducated and without resources she may be, at the end, she is trying to right her life. She ran away from both pedophiles and is married to a man around her age. She is learning.
@Leona10037 As to her leaving with Quilty. She was not kidding when Lol accused her 'dad" of "Murdering her Mother" or taking her "civil right away", Humb did all that n she wanted out. Sexual abuse to a young prepubescent girl is very damaging to her soul, Lol learned, at "dad's" hands that using her sexuality was a way to get her way. She wanted to escape from dad and did it the only way she knew how. Open ur mind up and u will be more successful. U will understand people N!
@strongarmeric This is untrue and can't believe so many people choose to blame the young, immature and ignorant teen! The movie is from the pedophile's view point. She sees him as "dad" and he sees her as a sex object. She is totally unaware of it. Dancing, chewing gum, picking the laundry, etc are not sexual come ons only for old pervert men. He likes young girls. There is part where he hires an 18 year old prostitute and is disgusted that her body reveals her to be 14+!!
@DougPatton1 Actually, the James Bond novels were partially based upon Fleming's experiences during WWII as a member of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, where he killed Nazis alongside Christopher Lee.
@2wingo Actually - Backroom Fleming's "Boys' Own" Bond superhero-secret agent dreams are his immature masturbatory-mind escape from the grim drab field realities properly portrayed in ex-MI6/Le Carre/nee Cornwell's "The Spy Who CAME in From The Cold"/"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy". While Nab's atypical grim drab ped Humbert aint nothin like good-Ped superstar Prez, Jerry Lee and many more Rockin pedos & adultos all unreported by Anglo-junk-media for ratings & sex-scare profit not protection.
@iheartyou187 You're not meant to hate Humbert actually. He's supposed to be somewhat a sympathetic character. The idea is that you want to hate him because of what he does, but the story being told through his point of view and the realization that no one (not even Lolita) is 100% innocent makes him a character you both hate and root for. He's unbelievably complex
Jeremy Irons, as usual is amazing in his role of portraying Humbert, although this movie isn't for the faint hearted. Dolores' dance somewhat resembles Josephine Bakers style.
Nah, you're looking at the film in a negative light. sure it's incredibly taboo but the director/writer is trying to show something beyond the subject
Dude, if Jeremy Irons lived in my house, I would SO be putting the moves on him too!!!

Nicky131Popstar 7 months ago
@Nicky131Popstar I agree - this girl is a lousy actress. Irons is nothing short of amazing though.
scaleshchess 6 months ago
@scaleshchess I know he is amazing and it's sad how this film made a fucking waste of a fantastic novel and actor.
Nicky131Popstar 6 months ago
This is an extraordinary film! the way it makes you feel uncomfortable and sick when he kisses a little girl but at the same time you understand that intense feeling he has for her and you want it to happen!!
jimena31 7 months ago

ThePackie91 7 months ago
@ThePackie91 I think she is great here - she comes across as a bitch, but she just tries to do the right thing for her daughter. I think you misunderstood.

you have an immature girl who toyed with an older man that accidently falls for her. Im not sure who the victim is but the movie does a good job of showing the depth of their relationship; its almost like they needed each other desperately
kors189 7 months ago
@kors189 That's what I love so much about this movie. We have this preconceived idea that this sort of relationship is wrong - and I agree that it is wrong - but Lolita forces you to question your assumptions because Humbert doesn't want to fall for Lolita, he just does. He's not an innocent character by any means, but neither is she.
OliveYou1114 7 months ago
@kors189 True, Lolita was toying with Humbert. She was playing at being an adult, "acting out" what she saw in movies and in magazines. In the book it often talks about how she is pretending to be sexy like the starlets she admires. I don't think she wanted/expected it to go as far as it did and didn't know how to back out... she was still so young, she needed an adult in her life, some kind of parent figure to care for her, and this was all she had.

These girls exist every where, what ever way you want to think about it, its simple, they want to do things to older guys, most people are ignorant to this fact and can't comprehend what goes on in peoples heads, even young girls, remembering things I did as a kid goes to prove that, and the sad part is that parents forget what its like to be that age, and most of the time go unaware that there children are engaging in these things, but weather they know or not it will persist and continue.
strongarmeric 8 months ago 17
@strongarmeric Not sure how true this is, as I young girl, I thought older men were gross and disgusting. But, I observe is more true is that young girls are innocent to how men of all ages see them: sexual objects of desire. It is men's visual, sexual drive that sees these girls. It is unclear when young girls realize how men truly see them, but it truly is a loss of innocence when they do. It is men who "want to do things".
Leona10037 6 months ago
@Leona10037 Humbert wasnt a pedo.......... because he didnt go for more then one, there can be one defining moment in persons life that not only defines them but shapes there life and the way they think, the other parts in the movie like where he touched the little girls hand in the bunny suit was for effect or to give you that uneasy feeling, the point is when we were 15 and seen the same age girls, then when you gain a few years guys dont act like they dont say damn im ole enough to be her dad
strongarmeric 5 months ago
@strongarmeric Have you listened to some of the things he says where he gives himself away? Jeremy Irons also narrates the audio book and there is a scene where he goes into detail about his desire for young women below the age of 14. He discusses in minute detail him hiring a prostitute who lied about her age and how he detested noticing the growing bone structure that revealed a girl older than 14! He saw an opportunity to satisfy his sickness.
Leona10037 5 months ago
@strongarmeric I do believe some mothers never acted as such towards older men in their younger years. IM FIFTEEN, I think engaging in such things is whorish and comes with very bad consequences. Hence why I feel no sorrows towards Dolores. Teens need to remember their place. If I had a child, be it girl or boy, to do those things, I would get mad as hell!

cymrutroll 5 months ago
@ras144 U R mighty harsh on your bretheren!! Legally, we set the age of 18 when a person can be legally responsible as an adult for very good reasons. People mature at different rates, have different parental and life circumstances that they had NO choice in. No one should be penalized for their entire lives much less have their lives ruined for the sick weaknesses of grown ups and Lolita is a the victim here. If U R 15 as you say, try to show a little compassion and it will do U good in life
Leona10037 5 months ago
@Leona10037 Um..I cant show compassion to something I dont understand. If I was Lolita, I wouldn't waste my time flirty. I would call the police immediately or least runaway as soon as I got to school, there are girls who are taken hostage and dont see the light of day for years. That's not Lolita, she had all the chance in the world to run and she chooses to run *SPOILER ALART* with another pedophile. Humbert is a terrible person, but Lolita doesn't get my entire compassion, some but not all.
ras144 5 months ago
@ras144 See, try to look at how you judge her here in a way that is unfair and unjust. It was the 1950s so women don't have the kind of freedoms, self confidence or technology U have today. As a young girl, who is taken to bed by "dad" then told, mom is dead. Lolita felt trapped, had she gone to the cops, she probably feared, and probably correctly so, given the times, she wouldn't have been believed. Even TODAY her perpetrator is see as HER victim by many!
Leona10037 5 months ago
@Leona10037 Self-confidence and Technology had nothing to do with it. I admit you're right when saying the cops wouldn't have helped. But couldn't she have picked a better plan *SPOILER* than to leave one Pedophile to another?
ras144 5 months ago
@ras144 I don't claim to have full understanding of her motivations, but rather than focusing on what SHE as the victim did wrong, let's blame the sicko. The point is her soul was broken, she learned something powerful in 'dad's" bed, to be SEX OBJECTI. That is the tragedy of Lolita. However clumsy or uneducated and without resources she may be, at the end, she is trying to right her life. She ran away from both pedophiles and is married to a man around her age. She is learning.
Leona10037 5 months ago
@Leona10037 As to her leaving with Quilty. She was not kidding when Lol accused her 'dad" of "Murdering her Mother" or taking her "civil right away", Humb did all that n she wanted out. Sexual abuse to a young prepubescent girl is very damaging to her soul, Lol learned, at "dad's" hands that using her sexuality was a way to get her way. She wanted to escape from dad and did it the only way she knew how. Open ur mind up and u will be more successful. U will understand people N!

no, a padlock on narrow-mimded peoples brains.
cymrutroll 5 months ago

2wingo 8 months ago

We were meant to hate Humbert but with Jeremy irons portraying him how can we?
iheartyou187 8 months ago 4
@iheartyou187 I know right. I only feel compassion and I KNOW it would be different if, say, Timothy Spall was playing him?? Haha!
TheYogiBunnie 8 months ago
@iheartyou187 You're not meant to hate Humbert actually. He's supposed to be somewhat a sympathetic character. The idea is that you want to hate him because of what he does, but the story being told through his point of view and the realization that no one (not even Lolita) is 100% innocent makes him a character you both hate and root for. He's unbelievably complex
