Spend 30 mins downloading the song and listening to it over and over and over and over.

  • I wish i could be born in the future, just to be there when we make 1st contact. We will probably die with these questions it's very unlikely it will happen in our life time. It's sad to think humans will one day be capable of immortality but i won't be there to experience it. Good luck future humans and remember to be good.

  • chills..chills..chills....always a good sign..if you can read them

  • Why the hell doesn't one of these fucking stupid celebs like Kim Kardashian throw a bit of money at the people behind these space programs. Surely there has to be at least one open minded celeberity out there wanting to give away some loot.

  • As soon as I watched this video, I thought of Contact and Project Argus. That book started my love for physics and Carl's books. <3

  • I become a med. doctor last year, but this is far more inspiring.

  • :S

  • 4 persons are Reptilians...

  • If they don't destroyed themselves like where we headed now

  • 1:58 shooting star... right side..

  • Put headphones on, and close your eyes.... and let Carl speak to you.

  • freddiew's VGHS raised more money than SETIstars.... What?

  • Amazing video, great use of Sagan's words....does anybody know the song used here?

  • @basefurie it sounds like Fade into Darkness, but just instrumentals to me

  • .............or want to.

  • Carl Sagan suddenly woke from a slumber of 13.7 billion years, and 15 years ago forever returned to that sleep. He found him self in a world filled with hate, intolerance, ignorance and death. He did the best he could through the power of science and understanding to help make that world as free and as beautiful as he could. Do not let his message and time on earth be in vein.

  • @conorisawsome :) wonderful sentiments ..

  • @conorisawsome Carl Sagan would probably not approve of being spoken of as a deity.

  • @impreziv im not, im just showing him my respect. can we not admire passed heros without making them into

    deitys"?

  • @conorisawsome ...... ='( ....beautifully put!

  • How far is SETI capable of hearing?

  • I'm sad to say in my debate team at the highschool I attend, we have the topic of the Advancing of Space Programs. Only 3 people agree to advance while the rest laugh at SETI, NASA, the ideas to expand the human race outwards into space. They call it a waste of money and time.

These are the people soon to be the future voters, citizens, and possibly leaders of our world's nations. I wish they could understand the words of Sagan, and realize the ignorance of their words.

    It hurts man

  • I miss Carl.

  • You know there's something wrong with this world when these videos haven't even got a 100,000 views.

  • I'm the slightest bit ticked off that Carl Sagan has made me care about the world. Apathy is so much easier.

  • Avicii at 0:19! (I know Avicii sampled the song to make Penguin/Fade Into Darkness)

  • Why Does the Government spend more money on war, killing other humans and spend less on Helping other Humans? we are all 1 kind. That is the problem, Some people dont see it that way and that why we are how we are today.

  • @Coles109 thats very simple to answer I'm afraid....its one word 'GREED' which I guess is inherently in all of us from the begining. Greed stems from want and need for survival. I 'need' food, if you have it, I 'want' your food, and I want 'all' of your food so I never 'need' food....As much as we have andvanced its unfortunate that our greed is killing us :+( too bad more people don't think like you.Peace

  • this is fuckin mind blowing

  • wow.. :O

  • wat if we found alien life and they said YES there is a god he made it all what then??

sciense and religion dont have to be enemys

  • @MALIRIPPA Then it will add to the belief of a god especially if they have actual evidence which at their point of civilization they will have either found him or proved his nonexistence. The reason why "science" is not in good terms with religion is the lack of evidence for religion. Science is faith in something because of evidence, based on facts and information that is publicly available to everyone to test out. Religion is the faith in a god despite the lack of evidence.

  • @GDop26

i hear you brother but what i meant is if we discover alien life and they are so far ahead and we asked them about a god and they could verify what we couldnt and that there is a god WHAT THEN??

i think its ignorant to belivie in god and not think there are other life in the universe

why would he only make earth if he exist. i dunno

  • Lets not argue the difference between religion and science, I know which side I fall on. Carl Sagan was a wonderful genius, and I had the book Cosmos from say 1. Religion was the excuse, Science is the reason.

  • GOD is Great.

  • I randomly found The Sagan Series, and I'm very happy that I have. I'm looking at things entirely different now.

  • Science is one of the creations of God. He put it here so that we may discover and flourish as human beings. It is a tool given to us by our creator so that we may prosper and expand our minds. Part of our existence is to advance as a species. If God gave us all the technology from the beginning of time, our lives would be meaningless and unfullfilling. We thrive by advancing in technology. The tool that our creator gave to us..........Science that is.

  • Radio communication study is the saving grace of my engineering career. I would have dropped out if this hadnt motivated me ...

  • if the aliens are so advanced why can't they listen for a bit

  • @benry007 It is probable that they do. As mentioned in the video, they can't detect us just because we are listening. The opposite is also true. Stray radio and television signals leave our planet every day. They have already reached more than a thousand nearby stars.

However, an older species would have been broadcasting for far longer. Their voices may have already reached millions, or even hundreds of millions of stars. We have an obligation to listen.

  • Amazing! But i'm slightly disappointed that he got the age of humanity wrong,, it's 2000 centuries (200 000 years), not 20 000 (2 000 000 years) as he said.

  • Can someone please tell me the name of this amazing song playing in the background?

  • @ThoughtlessDNB Penguin Cafe Orchestra- Perpetuum Mobile

  • @jcuriel3000 Thank you sir!

  • if and when we ever make contact, I have a feeling that people will comment about how Carl Sagan helped get us there. After all, he was one of SETI's earliest supporters and a well known public advocate of the extraterrestrial search program.

  • SETI and NASA know well that life exist out of this planet..

  • @xIIIAlcopwnageIIIx It's thinking like that that promotes war and killing in the name of religion. Let people believe whatever they want.

  • the theme song sounds alot like fade inte darkness by avicii.. dont you think?

  • Due to donations from loyal fans of SETI, the program has survived shutdown.

  • @Niblik6015 Woo! ^o^

  • A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe", a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest — a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures... -Einstein

  • While I see the merit, wouldn't it be futile, though? It a message, if received, would be extremely old. Far older than the light we see from galaxies and stars light years away. It would be scarier, I believe, to receive a message now with radio technology, because imagine how far comparatively advanced they'd be.

  • @FlyHighFuture Even if the message was old due to the distance it traveled, then it certainly proves of other life, and if the distance is long, than we should not fear of any contact for this generation, or the hundreds that would be ahead of us. The program is just to listen, like an eavesdropper, so no matter what, they would not know of us, for we just simple picked up the message but didn't stop it. I think it would amazing now to receive a message to finally shut some people up. :)

  • Comment removed

  • I would be extremely surprised if an advanced alien species still used radio for communication. Radio is a crude and limited form of data transmission.

  • Just because it's shut down doesn't mean it will never come back. We're probably not ready. We can't even get our shit under control.

And who knows, it might not even be us. We might blow ourselves right out of the evolutionary race and civilization might start over with the distant ancestors of raccoons who will some day look at the crumbles of our species and think, what did they do wrong?

  • Sorry Guys we needed the extra attack helicopter to bomb libia and liberate the oil. Oh btw we take your money too and give it to our friends the banksters.. and the wall street crooks and criminals.

    Sincerely yours, The goverment.

  • I can't really ever wrap my head around why there could be an alien civilization sending out radio signals in a proximity close enough to receive them by us. I just really think that if there is by some happenstance a civilization that uses radio waves for communication the odds that they are in close enough proximity for us to hear them in maybe even possibly a 100 million years of existence on this planet may be a long shot to say the least. Space is a BIG place and Radio Waves are very slow.

  • I blame Republicans.

  • @06mustangCE

    Hah haa : P

  • you know whats wrong with all of humanity. humans belive they are bigger than what they actually are. humans focus on themselves and put thier own lives on a petastool. survival instincts. what is money compared to the universe? what is a few human lives compared to the cosmos? we are nothing, and should be grateful just to exist.

  • SETI is gone =(

  • @DidntKnowWhatToPut1 oh no its not :) and it will never disappear! Not until we find what we are looking for, new civilizations, new life and our new future!

  • i know jodie helps this program today...shes awesome :)

  • Sorry Professor Sagan, but this retarded country can't even feed 50 Million Citizens, what makes us believe that they will do something to expand our intergalactic explorations??

  • @deeppurple28

Hey, but we can spend BILLIONS AND BILLIONS (sorry, Carl...) of dollars on wars to control others, and other such nonsense. Who knows, maybe it's a good thing it's shut down. I'm more worried that if we did make contact alien life, we'd start trying to figure out how to kill and control them. (I mean we as a species.) Of course we're worried about what monsters we might find when we are that very monster!

  • the problem is that as humans we fear what we do not know, this causes war, and desperation. greed among other things as well skew the perception of value, we are caught up in a blinded society based on war, and stereo types. open your eyes, do not trust what the government says or what the bible says, because those things mask you, brothers and sisters we are all the same, the same blood runs through our veins, through peace, love and equality we will strive towards the stars.

  • Would you listen to someone if they berated you because of your beliefs and then shoved facts in your face to prove it? If our goal is to help show others the wonders of science, then we must take an approach of understanding. Most people are intelligent enough to understand the basics of modern science (and its implications for their superstitions), but they do not receive that information in a nonthreatening manor. It is for that reason that so much misunderstanding persists.

  • @amarmirza08 well said, I'm christian and a student at UAA, I'm always supprised how so many profesors say that people who believe in God are superstitious, nerrow minded, or just unintelegent. However, that's just not true. I can pass the class !(maybe i only pass with a B though) I believe the science, I just don't agree with their atheism.

  • I think the best we could send/receive Primes toward/from nearby Galaxies (M31, M33, LMC, etc.)

    1. Small region of sky for us, Billions of stars receiving. Chances our transmission encounter some curious civilization increased.

    2. Even in Milky Way reply might take a millennium. I say, ignore the details, and simply let them know that THEY ARE/WERE NOT ALONE.

We should listen to M31 for messages sent 2Mya. And also greet our future brothers who are at "present" still climbing trees.

  • @YTelf What because i don't think these vile things exist?! fuck off you daft toad! aliens are like rats god will slash their throats, crush their skulls and send them to hell!!!!! if they think they can live on his beautiful planets!!!!!! the fucking bastards make my fucking blood boil!! GOD WILL SHOW US THE WAY!

  • what is the name of the song playing in the background?

  • @haig271 Perpetuum Mobile

  • Religion had its run, let Science lead the future.

  • @Coolmenest science built the modern world and continues to seek the answers to our questions. so shut it, human nature can end us, it is science that will hopefully cut through the ignorance and lies to pave a path for humanity to follow.

  • @roxas12590 1.this is my OPINION asshole 2. Science got us deep in this shit and i doubt it'll get us out

  • @Coolmenest you ignorant, moron. Science is the use of practical logic and knowledge to expand our knowledge far beyond and to use that knowledge to adapt our species to better ourselves through the scientific method.

  • @Coolmenest You know what I love most about science? The fact that, without it, we wouldn't be communicating with each other right now. And medicine. I quite like medicine.

  • @THEPO0PSMITH Amen bro! Science is the way---

  • @THEPO0PSMITH-----FUCK YEAH!!! just like ''STALIN' bra

  • @j187killa what is "STALIN' bra

  • @THEPO0PSMITH Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union (until 53’). The Nation that blew up churches and outlawed religious practices only to ultimately kill over 20 million of its own citizens; basically Stalin was all into science and other bullshit I don’t feel like explaining, just Google him. My point is don’t slam religion because people who are into science can be bad to.

  • @j187killa Do you want to know the difference? The religious do it because of religion, the irreligious do it for themselves. Whereas only Stalin was to blame for his greed and bloodlust, both the religion and those who believed it are to blame for their mistakes.

  • @j187killa I know who Stalin is, and I didn't slam religion. I have no problem with religion, and I respect the rights of others to practice what they like. I also agree with you when you say science has bad people too, there are bad apples in every belief, that's why I disagree with generalizing people for what they believe.

  • @j187killa does is sound like to you that Sagen was "slamming religion?" I didnt think so, that's why we could all take a note from his method. He respected other's beliefs without feeling the need to make his own seem more important. He simply had a ability to understand.

  • @coolbeanburrito This is exactly why I admire Sagan, and how I try to live my own life.

  • @THEPO0PSMITH I'm sure he'd be glad to know he made an impact on you.

  • @THEPO0PSMITH what if God created science

  • @THEPO0PSMITH Why can't religion and science live together in harmony? no matter what happens in the future, religion will never die.

  • @TrollingIsGay Religion is manmade

It will fade when we do

  • @TrollingIsGay Im sure there are more than we understand out there, of course there is, LOOK at physics, its AMAZINg far more "far-fetched" than those quite recently written religious texts ever made any of it out to be, the real world is way more beautiful, way more amazing than any religion ever described. Theres ALOT more out there, TRUTH, FREEDOM, BEAUTY. Religion suppresses that! Imagine if you see how beautiful it is, it doesnt take faith; just truth.

  • @THEPO0PSMITH I aggree with you 100%, but i just wish your name wasnt THE PO0SMITH

  • It's funny, scrolling through all of these comments and witnessing exactly what is wrong with our world today. We need to get our shit together humanity.

  • really beautifully done!

  • Does anyone know which song plays in the background?

  • Comment removed

  • ok why do u always bring religion into evrything

why cant i believe in god and also believe that there is something out there

  • This is by far the saddest one. All that happy music and Carl's optimistic ruminations, then that suddenly stops to reveal that its not going on any more. Fought back tears, man.

  • I am 15 and i don't believe in god. There i said it... it feels AWESOME!!! It makes no sense to me that there's a greater power than all of us. Morals are choices, not religion. I choose when something is right or wrong without god ever showing up and telling me. It's more like common sense. By the way, when god says "let there be light" and light came on, what was god doing in the dark "All eternity" until about 4.1 - 4.5 billion years ago?

  • @OhF0UK I agree with you that you can have good morals independent of religion. Something like the 10 commandments, I would say, is self-evident. Something else that is self evident are "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness", as in the Declaration. As to the creation story in the bible, unless you're a real fundamentalist those stories are meant to be taken figuratively and not literally.

  • Actually, I thought the issue is that by the time it gets to us it's too garbled to be distinguishable from background noise.

  • @rbassilian Steven Hawkins has talked about this, he believes there are no civilizations as advanced or more advanced than us within a couple hundred light years.

But that's only a couple hundred light years, tiny in perspective of the the Milky-way galaxy let alone the universe.

  • @Maggot1750 Because there are'nt any to begin with fuckweed! if they are they'd be as thick as pig shit with brains like a goldfish..not worth gods time or even ours you cock wanker! seti should be burnt down its fucking evil!

  • Wow. I cried. lol that is extremely-extremely rare.

  • Haha 2:38 it looks like the antenna is shaking its head. "Nope I don't transmit, nuh uh"

  • 2:35 that's no alien. That's Carl Sagan!!! =D

  • dammit carl sagan, you are such a cock tease...

  • Soooo SETI is now shut down and NASA is on the same path... Thank you Obama. Thank you for the "change". -_-

  • Everyone who has seen the Jimmy Neutron movie knows that looking for aliens is a bad idea.

  • Anything for Science

  • I'm convinced humanity is going to die on this rock

  • I am a native English speaker, however I just noticed that there are 10 translated languages for the captions, and i would just like to say that it is awesome that you would take the time to create all those just to get the word of Carl Sagan out there

on a side not, at least 99% of Polish words in this video start with either a p or z

  • SETI is rebooting their satellites in September :D

online fundraising can really do a lot.

  • @dillygurl I thought it was dead for good. Great to know its back. I guess there still some people with a bit of sense left in them.

  • I love you Carl...

thank you for everything and rest in peace...

  • everyone wants to buy commercial time i know a way we can my uncle works with the channel producer for cnn so if we get enough likes on the facebook page universal page we can make a difference!

  • that's why the song sounds familiar

    its Avicii-Fade into Darkness!!!! :DDDDDDD

  • While on the crew of Contact, Carl sent us weekly thanks for the way the film was turning out. The final week of shooting, Carl had passed away.

I've never been so attached to a project, and will admire Carl & Ann as long as I'm on this silly rock.

BTW - Never be afraid to be an atheist. No one helps us more than one another.

  • So SETI is on ice? WTF?

  • @Sirchud68 Think it's back, with creative & open-minded public sector help for a change.

  • I am afraid this video gives the impression that far more radio-telescopes are funded and actively involved in SETI. Actually the SETI@Home project uses marginal data that is saved from other projects and they need $6000 to continue working.

  • @brainburger dude they got the money!!!!

  • @guitarrahombre Oh for fuck sake! how dare they continue this search for pompus green shit! this news makes me sick the ATA wants burning in hell where it belongs!

  • @NobDickBalls hey dickballs quite the channel you've got there ;) I take my hat off, your a damn good troll.

  • @guitarrahombre You twat!

  • Radio technology was invented by Jesus in the Bible.

  • Science is the language of the universe! Beautiful.

  • 1 attack helicopter a year? We are doomed as a species!

  • @dillygurl oh. from what you said it seemed like you were an atheist with a positive attitude towards religion. well, whatever.

  • When I listen to Carl Sagan's voice, I feel hopeful.

When I look down from this video to the comments below, filled with hatred and anger alongside of it, I want to cry, and not in the usual, good way that Sagan makes me want to cry.

  • @dillygurl sure there might be a few good lessons in there too, but when you claim such a book is fact and you go parading it around the world trying to get others to join you, all of the hate in that book will get spread right along with the good stuff, and the cycle of hate just continues, so our only option right now is to destroy the entire religion. you can be a moral person without god, and in my opinion it's much EASIER to be good WITHOUT him. and nobdickballs is a muslim.

  • @iinkshade i agree fully with both of those comments actually.

  • @iinkshade I chose to mix oil and water (so far I haven't enslaved anyone or killed, so guess its going well). I respect people all other religions & those who follow no religion, but I can't stand people who go out of their way to spread false information to try and deface others. I think there's a reason why a man of greater intelligence than us said "Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind" But I agree that nobdickballs is a sad excuse of a living being.

  • @iinkshade by the looks of it your the one with alot of hate. throwing hurtful words out everywhere. just saying

  • @dillygurl thats EXACTLY what the bible says. it tells you who to hate, who to worship, how to make god like you, how to make him hate you, who to kill, who not to kill, when to kill them, when not to kill them, who can be a slave, who cant be a slave. it's also filled with god doing some pretty horrible stuff himself. What a wonderful religion!

  • @iinkshade What bible did you read? It says word for word not to kill or hate. When the bible mentions slave it is actually talking about servitude. The only slavery mentioned in the bible by modern day standards was in egypt, which it stated as bad. And what's wrong about telling you who to worship? I would prefer worshiping someone deserving, rather than something that isn't. God has never done a horrible thing, hes done things we aren't allowed. Actually read it if you wish to talk about it.

  • @RsWeChanged Have you ever read the Bible? The WHOLE Bible? It's filled with horrible moralities and outright ludicrous stuff... And I'm not eve talking about the old testament!

  • @tankusfred Where exactly are these horrible moralities and outright ludicrous stuff?

  • @RsWeChanged What bible did you read? "Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death" (Exodus 21:15)

"Cursed he who holds back his sword from blood." (Jeremiah 48:10)

God directly commanded the deaths of 2,270,365+ people, this is the most conservative figure I might add.

Satan on the other hand has only killed 10 AND that was at the command of GOD at the time, so you could add those to god's tally.

  • @Maggot1750

    1) God doesn't owe us a thing. Lets suspend your disbelief and say there's a god, would he have to follow our rules?

    2) Being punished for your actions is a good thing...

    3) Every person god killed deserved it.

    4) I would be very interested to see where you got those numbers from.

I am extremely open minded, I'm not even saying definitively that god exists, I was arguing against the lies stated about the bible. (I was talking from a standpoint as if the bible was fact)

  • @RsWeChanged

1)Um, what? I didn't say anything about him existing or not. Why would he not have to follow our rules? Lead by example, why listen to someone that doesn't practice what they preach? If he gave us free will then what cause does he have to kill us?

2)Being punished for your actions is not a good thing when you can't learn from them, i.e. you're dead.

3)Really? "And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory..." Acts 12:23

    4)The old testament

  • @iinkshade have you ever read the bible. It says though shall not kill

  • @iinkshade

"thats EXACTLY what the bible says. it tells you who to hate"

No, it says to LOVE YOUR ENEMIES.... and it also says to remove the board from your own eye before judging the speck in your brothers. You might do well to consider it.

  • @SovereignStatesman

for every verse in the bible theres a verse that contradict it

  • @teemup123

    If you're a dumb google-jockey who doesn't know CONTEXT.

  • @iinkshade

5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you

  • @iinkshade you've not the tiniest inkling as to what the Bible says and infinitely less, regarding what you're trying to convey. how sad that you beg and moan for "others to be open minded" yet so blind and ignorant yourself.

  • @iinkshade your ignorance is overwhelming. The bilbe was written by religious zealots used for political and social interests. All the religions are serial and all produce long lasting time tested philosophical ideals. Most people are unaware of these and dont use this part of their religion that isnt cultural and geographically defined.

Some people do and these people know where to draw the line. Dont sum up what you dont know. We cant do without God because everything is God. We are God.

  • I've always known about SETI, and I love Carl Sagan, but your videos really got me thinking. I'm now into SETI@Home and I just donated $15. Thanks.

  • If everyone that watched this video donated 10 dollars, which isn't a large amount to give at all the search for life could continue.

So everyone that watches this from now on should do their part and donate whatever you can, I sure as hell know I'm donating.

  • to religion, i say, to each their own. and @NotDickBalls, your religious pushiness is quite frankly annoying. especially since you're obviously not getting the intended meaning out of the bible, and you keep making relatively the same statements in each comment.

  • @dillygurl intended meaning? you mean the part where: it tells you how to have slaves? Jesus says to beat you slaves? God commanded the Jews to commit genocide against people just because they were living there first? or how you can't sleep with the same sex? or how he said women can't have authority over men? or how Jesus said to kill children who curse at their parents or to cut the top skin off your penis the bible is a joke, and it has caused so much hatred that it should be destroyed
  • i don't hate christianity, i just hate how people have come to perceive the bible. the bible is supposed to teach you how to love. love thy neighbor, love thy self.. stuff like that. the bible isn't telling you "if you do this, god will hate you. if you do that, you're going to hell." religion has pretty much only been used in 2 ways. 1: by the people, to give purpose and meaning to life. 2: by governments, to create order and classification among the people. i'm more agnostic, but when it comes

  • @dillygurl You couldn't be more wrong about the Bible. I'm going to assume you haven't read it. It is an utterly horrid book, with a few self obvious moral teachings thrown in. Don't kill, well if god says i shouldn't then I won't.

  • @nobdickballs we need be alien killing for not be god is wanting us to. the aliens not be wanting of god killing so SEND THEM TO HELL WHERE THEY BELONG! those evil shits will sending us straight to hell unless we slit their satan worshiping throats and send them to HELL! god will not allow such vile creatures to exist, but if they do they are a work of SATAN. THAT MEANS WE SHOULD KILL THEM ALL! HULK SMASH!!!! lolololololol

  • we need be alien killing for not be god is wanting us to. the aliens not be wanting of god killing so SEND THEM TO HELL WHERE THEY BELONG! those evil shits will sending us straight to hell unless we slit their satan worshiping throats and send them to HELL! god will not allow such vile creatures to exist, but if they do they are a work of SATAN. THAT MEANS WE SHOULD KILL THEM ALL! HULK SMASH!!!! lolololololol

  • >funding seti instead of transhumanism

    Idiots.
